A. Moe Odum is good. But he/s only 6'1" tall and weighs 160 pounds. I worry he may be too small to start in the backcourt alongside 6'2" Kylan Boswell? I also like that he's a tough kid from the Bronx. And the Illini need more tough players on their roster. (2) Watkins will cost us too much NIL money for a one year rental. A poster recently said that the bidding for Watkins would START at $1M. (C) I think Big Z could work with Tomi and Morez if each player was willing to get approximately 27 minutes of playing time each game. (A 3-way split of the C and PF minutes.) But I wonder if adding Big Z from Arkansas might affect Morez's potential transfer?
My likely first choice at PG may be a long shot but has been mentioned as a potential transfer. Bruce Thorton along side Boz would be one physical pair of guards. Those two with a even stronger version of Morez would be some fellas to take to a rock fight!

Poneman, now there's a name I've not seen in a while! Isn't he an agent now, or at least trying to be????
You right I used to ran into him at high school tournaments few years back when he was a scout, and he did couple of interviews with my son back then.

What do we think of this? Of course promises made and aren’t being kept, but I’m always curious as to people who say they know put their money where their mouth is.

I think it's great (because we live up to our NIL promises). I hope all the welshers are exposed. it can only help us

yeah, Poneman is an agent now

I had great hopes for KJ when he was brought in last June-July. He was the knight on a white horse for the first couple of months of the season, too. I think he is going to play in the NBA for years to come, I think he will not be what a lottery pick is hoped to be and so I don't think he will be a lottery pick any longer. So? He'll still be a solid pro, in the league.

But the absence of quickness is not going to be overcome. KJ will do fine, just not great. We need to move forward now.
Count me in as someone who appreciates KJ being here and am glad we have had him on the team. I know he has had a lot of bad moments but some great ones too. Not every 1 and done player is going to be Cooper Flagg. He's only 18 and I think he will be drafted pretty high and will be happy for him. I hope represents the Illini well with a solid NBA career. I'll be rooting for him no matter how this season ends. JMO.

I took it to mean that those 2 spots will be the "big game" targets. I expect we will still try to get a big, but it will be a backup and probably not in that big game category. Although if there are any legs to the Big Z rumors, would he fit that category? Maybe?

Oh boy … I’ve got some stories on this topic …
There was a story a year or so ago that the Michigan State football team nearly had a mutiny before their game at Iowa because NIL payments hadn’t been met. The assistant coaches were scrambling and finally got one donor to cough up some cash — a donor who later was miffed that he was the only one who did so, feeling like a chump.

Is the MSU basketball program more organized than the football side?

If we don't address the frontcourt significantly, next year will be a rerun of this year.

The limitations that we have, ESPECIALLY defensively, cannot be fixed unless that frontcourt gets bigger and more physical and MUCH deeper.
People have screamed at Ben all year and his amount of playing time, but fail to acknowledge that he was the only other frontcourt player on the roster.

Offensively, the one in, four out offense, trying to emulate that NBA....trash it. We need to be able to get the ball into the paint and convert.

If the "big game" hunting is at the guard/wing position, I can only assume that means Tomi and Morez are guaranteed returners.

We aren't the favorite, but it's on the table. Being too far away from home is the biggest thing working against us but the staff has legit interest.
Am assuming in other for this to work the interest has to be mutual.

Both our inbound freshmen have good measurables, do we have minutes to see their development? Can see both being solid in year 2.

I agree on points A and C. An Odum/Boswell backcourt doesn't really excite me and Tomi/Morez/Big Z would be a great trio especially with Morez and Tomi adding weight while Big Z would provide some much needed rim protection.

I couldn't disagree more with your opinion on Watkins though. He is probably the most sure thing in the portal, brings two way potential, will be entering his 6th year or college when most COVID eligibility has expired, and is a lengthy plus athlete on the wing.

Jamir Watkins is a ceiling elevating talent for the entire team that is very likely All American level talent that could be a national player of the year level guy next year. He's not the same player as TJ(doesn't have the blinding speed/explosiveness but nobody really does), but his stats this year are pretty similar to TJs first year in Champaign.

He would by my top choice in the portal and a frontcourt of Watkins, Morez, and Ivisic could very well be the best in the country. Just pair them with some guards that can shoot/facilitate and you're golden.
I think that Watkins might be the best available player in the transfer portal this time around. (Has he entered the portal already?) He's listed at 6'7", 210 pounds. In 32 games this past season, while averaging 30.9 minutes per game, Watkins averaged 18.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. He shot 42.7% on FGs, including 32.1% on 3-pointers (meh), and 74.7% on FTs.

But bidding on Watkins has been rumored by insiders to START at $1,000,000! How much higher will that go? (Hawkins apparently got $2M from Kansas State.) Do you or any insiders have any guesses/predictions as to how much NIL money Watkins can/will get? How high would YOU be willing to go in the bidding? How much would $2M to Watkins limit what Illinois could pay to other transfers, and/or to retain key players on our roster?

If Bruce Thornton enters the transfer portal (or has he already?), what makes you think that Illinois "may be a longshot" for his transfer? Like you, he'd probably be my first choice for an experienced PG via the portal. He's listed at 6'2" tall, but he's listed at 215 pounds, and he's very strong. Thornton's stats for Ohio State this past season were extremely good. In 32 games, averaging 36.2 minutes per game (that's high), he averaged 17.7 ppg, 3.4 rpg, and 4.6 apg. His shooting stats were 50.1% on FGs (!), including 42.4% on 3-pointers (!!), and 85.3% on FTs (!). Thornton's assist to turnover ratio was better than 3 to 1... elite. Do you have any idea how much NIL money OSU paid Thornton this season? Do you or any insiders have any guess/prediction as to how much NIL money it might take to get a Thornton transfer to Illinois?

I would put us at #2 for Dix, think Creighton is running favorite there. Along with Sarr, a guard and wing from the portal is what they are going big game hunting for.
This is crazy, during the Iowa game I was watching him play and telling my nephews who are students at Illinois now, I would love to get him when Fran is fired. God willing that would be great. Make it happen!
