I'm not asking permission - I'm just taking it (but adding the user handle for appropriate attribution since the quote is so great).

West Virginia basketball has really struggled past 7 years
Last 5 under Huggins (first 11 were good), 1 under interim 9-23. OK first year under DeVries - last out.
Real gut punch if they lose DeVries after one year.
I hope Chester gets a chance. He is somebody who really improved himself in 4 years at Illinois. Learned how to shoot. 6 ppg 5 rbg 5 apg his senior year. 6'2' guard.

Steve Forbes would still crawl through glass for that job …

I know I’ve said that on here before but it’s from the man himself … Lol

If that’s the worst they do … They’ll be alright …
Forbes will be 60 in a few weeks....age aside, he would be a good hire. He did very well at ETSU and quickly turned around a dumpster fire at WF. The ACC must really suck these days, because they have been solidly over .500 in conference the past 4 seasons and haven't made the Tourney

Also - Ben Johnson is a name at Iowa …
I know people in the know seem to be a lot higher on him, but I just don't quite get the Ben Johnson hype. He did fine for the players that Minnesota could put on the floor, but he still seems very unproven to me whether he can actually recruit and build an annual top half of the B10 team. Maybe he'll get there but when your best season in 4 years is a 19-15 season 11th place finish in an extremely down B10 (outside Purdue and us) with Christie and Garcia on the roster, *shrugs*

Just seems like he'd be a pretty decent step down from Fran and quite the gamble.

I read that Devries' buyout is $7.5M. Did Iowa hesitate on the buyout?

Because it's a major conference, and he has never been a head coach. Simple as that.
I would only hire the next man up if he's been groomed for the position for multiple years by a legend that's retiring, like Scheyer at Duke. Otherwise I think coaches need to cut their teeth at mid-majors. D1 basketball has an advantage of 364 Division 1 teams with many different tiers of conferences. Most of the time you can get a proven winner that went from an automatic 1-bid conference to a mid major and passed every test along the way. It's not like Football where there a lot more limited FBS options and sometimes you do just want to gamble on a coordinator.

It’s insanely underrated what Fran did there …
These three guys were all pretty good Iowa coaches.

Dr. Tom Davis (13)
.658 269-140

Lute Olson (9)
.651 167-91

Fran McCaffery (14)
.594 280-191

I've always been a bit afraid of Iowa, but I think it's probably a "hangover" from the Dr. Tom Davis years. Loved (hated) his full court press!
