lol ok man, whatever you say.
Any time our insiders disagree, I feel we get a glimpse of where their connections lie. Some seem to be more in tune to the staff and their side of what took place. Some seem to have ties and connections to most things that come out of Chicago (including players, coaches, and AAU programs). Others seem connected more closely to the DIA. Then there are those that seem to be connected to very big boosters.

I thank them all for what they share, and I try to take what each shares with a grain of salt because of the perspective they may be hearing!

One thing is certain, they all have a love of the University of Illinois!

Thank you all!

Here's the thing I've been kicking around: evaluating talent on last-year-on-roster (I was going to say in school, and then I realized how dumb that thought is) is the way to most-meaningfully evaluate "talent." Not potential talent, but actual on-roster talent. Let's see how many pick up on this. :)

So many people here holding water for a kid that said while leaving “I don’t want my career to end up like Kofi.” If that’s his line of thinking, I’m honestly happy he’s off the team because that’s not a guy you want in the locker room

WE can't keep them, because Underwood doesn't value keeping players. That's not his ethos. His mindset is that of a junior college coach: reload. (Dumb)

Trying to bite my tongue. Typical characters doing what they do. Both sides are at fault a little bit here but everyone fully blaming the staff doesn't know what the heck they are talking about.
I’m not worried at all about one player leaving. I am concerned about rumors of lying to players, a coach’s son not qualified to coach that is rumored to be acting like a true preacher’s kid, the kid’s buddy who’s not qualified to coach running the defense, a toxic locker room, and players exiting almost every year. Those are symptoms of instability. Doesn’t matter how good of a head coach he is if he doesn’t have players staying. Please tell me if any of this is false. I will believe you. You have earned that right. There’s math here that doesn’t add up. I know what Brad was like and all the crap that went on 5 years ago first hand from team members. Doesn’t sound like anything has changed for the better. I know it sounds crazy but I would like to have a coach (honest, caring, and knows his stuff) like a BB that I am proud to represent the university and knows how to make in game adjustments because that is a winning formula. Just as Bret.

Never going to blame a player for getting paid. The program opening recruits over current players. The future is never guaranteed in sports. Breaking said wrist may have been a wake up call. Developing handles and a shot late in life isn't a guarantee either. That translates to pro Europe. Get paid now. Can't hate for that.

Letting proven commodities leave and replacing them with subpar scabs that's a coaching culture issue.

I appreciate very much your generousity, candor, toughness, and effort here. I also think you are dead wrong about "doesn't know what the heck they are talking about." As in: 100% wrong.

Why am I so harsh? Winning ain't easy. Excuses are for losers.

I think Underwood has been pretty bad at adjusting to the new world of college basketball. He has absolutely recruited over guys and just said, oh I won't cut you, I'll just take some guy exactly like you and sit you on the bench, unless of course you'd like to leave on your own. No one can possibly say Underwood has shown loyalty to his players. So when the players don't show loyalty in return should we really be shocked.

People have asked, how does Painter do it? Well Painter has always been a system recruiter. He will not bring in guys he thinks could damage the team culture. He would rather bring in Braden Smith ranked #200 who has the skillset he wants and develop him instead of a top 50 guy that will demand the ball and cause problems in the locker room. So when you bring in that type of guy, and build a culture of team development, and of course when you win a lot, it's much easier to keep guys around.

We don't do that. We bring in, whomever Underwood thinks he can get. If that forces the hand of Goode, Harris, Hansberry, Rodgers, Dainja, etc to leave, that's the way it has been. I think the past year he made some real bad evals. I have no idea why he went after Booth. I personally never liked what I saw from Humrichous, Jake Davis made me scratch my head. Underwood has shown no interest in developing who he's got.

We have absolutely got to return Boswell, Ivisic, and White. History has shown, you can't bring in 3 or 4 new starters and expect to have a great season, no matter who those starters are. Unfortunately, it looks like we're headed that direction AGAIN.
In this they can. There are teams still playing right now that shows that you can.

The Johnson family using the resources available to them to maximize their value under the current system is normal and should be expected.
Yep. We rely very heavily on getting the ball in the hands of playmakers and hoping to win this matchups. That’s great for a guy like Wil. Rez needs to have plays ran for him.

We did some, but it’s not our primary focus on offense. Did we ever run a play where we post a guy up? Run any traditional high low between him and Tomi?

How is he ruining kid’s careers?
Hypothetically- TA gets in the parents and players ear that “all they are offering you is a starting role and $1M?” I know a school that can get you double that and remember how they disrespected you but not starting you right away?

Kid enters the portal and goes to a bad big east school, doesn’t really get $2M that was promised, starts for a bad team and becomes irrelevant in college basketball- the money dries up the following year and he doesn’t get offered anything close to that his jr and sr years and isn’t on NBA radars - and career ruined

I’m saying, I hope that doesn’t happen- I’m a fan of Morez and want him to succeed. But I was responding to the Ant Wright tweet who is pretty connected

He's a recently-graduated former player occupying a position he didn't really earn by virtue of being the coach's son. What's not to like?

Honestly, his offensive scheme has been decent or better most of the time. But the whole situation still stinks.
It’s not just that. There’s rumors on Twitter he’s also an a hole and treats players like crap.

And let's be clear here, BEFORE anyone had ever uttered the words "name, image and licensing", the NCAA in its fecklessness and cowardice had for a decade been opening up ever freer transfer rules, explicitly in lieu of and in an obviously doomed effort to prevent player payment.

And then when a free marketplace arrived, it came in through a barely-thought-out backdoor that the NCAA TO THIS DAY is still playing make believe, mostly with itself, isn't a pay to play system.

Amateurism was a farce and an abomination. The transition to professionalism has been a complete abdication of any sense of institutional stewardship, or even understanding of institutional interests in the first place.

As with player movement, so with school movement.
Not the point, but it's name, image, and likeness.

I would assume there were multiple PO’d donors with how this season played out.

Or we need to get assistant coaches worth their salt and not keep players like Morez Johnson on the bench behind 39 minutes of Ben Humrichous.
