Dad specifically mentions mid range shots. Go back and read his comments again. You are correct it's about improving their skills- with those specific skills being that Morez wants to play more on the perimeter.

If he is going to get $2M to go somewhere and be a perimeter big, then good for him.
Oh I agree good luck and God's speed. Like him but he will be more Rodman than Malone.

1) They have a a TON of money available-they can afford to add Dix and bring in a couple of other big time guys along with some depth,
2) Josh Dix would be an amazing fit next to Kylan and Tomi.
3) Fat from a done deal, Kansas and Illinois neck and neck right now.
Is Keyshawn Hall an option if he becomes available? Seems like a good fit for the offense.

What about Ryan Conwell from Xavier? Thought well of him scouting him for our Xavier game. Probably the best player in the portal imo (and also not sure he'll command the 2mil Dix will).

To me, losing Podz bc he wasn't "good enough to play" was a miss. Losing Morez, who was one of the more exciting and dynamic players on the team for nearly the same reason is malpractice and setting a pattern. (I.e. not letting these kids just play free and loose, or getting enough play time) I hate it. Morez, who my kids affectionately named "Big Baby" due to his side ponies was a fault favorite this year. I'm super bummed, and in combination with another underwhelming season, the possibility of the staff not getting retooled, and having constant roster turnover, I'm just about done with the BU Era. (And I love the guy)
Captain Obvious here. 😀Ultimately , all of these decisions are based on self interest, which we all understand.

I think dad's point re: Kofi & Dain isn't that they weren't successful at Illinois... its that they aren't in the league because we didn't have them shooting 18 footers and 3 pointers... but those guys mid-range and threes did not see any uptick after leaving Illinois...

Whole situation sucks
I understand what dad is trying to say, but the Dain and Kofi argument is not a good one. I do think Morez really has more to his game but when you are elite at rebounding, it's hard to take him away from the basket.

Kofi was 7 ft 300 lb and DOMINATED inside. He was a 1st Team AA regardless of jump shot. He and Dain struggled enough being able to dribble, idk why you would want them create from 15 ft out, lol.

Yes, this whole situation just flat out stinks..

If that’s the case, why didn’t they pony up more to keep Johnson?

35+ pages whining about an athletic dude that showed he hustled. He was never a dominant force on offense and got absolutely worked on defense. Did he make a few highlight plays? Sure. But we can easily get a replacement from the portal who will be a better asset on both ends of the court…

Later Rez, good luck.
He was a true freshman. If he stays, he likely plays a solid role for us later on. It's a matter of whether BU can bring in someone who complements Tomi better right away. That's where the game is, I suppose, those Izzo and Painter believe otherwise.

We are all entitled to opinions

However, Brad has multiple Big Ten championships, constantly makes tourney, an elite 8 appearance, and consistently ranked in the top 25 kenpom. Not saying prior coaches should be a benchmark but Bruce and Groce were far far worse (Weber more towards the end). Be careful what we wish for as the grass isn’t always greener though sometimes is!
When the coach and program are funded like a top-15 program, we should be expecting these results, plus more. I also think the portal era almost needs to be looked at apart from his earlier success. The TSJ E8 run is sandwiched around some pretty questionable evals and roster construction. This season will be fairly telling how we move forward.

There is also the very real possibility that programs who lean into the portal approach are going to be much more boom/bust from year to year in general.

I actually think Morez can get there... he can be a guy who can step out and knock down a shot... and think he could do that here... but for them to complain about being benched for taking a contested mid range jump shot in a rd2 NCAA game is wild... he hadn't shown a mid range game all season and they think the NCAA tournament is the right time & place to start working that in? idk....

If I could just pluck names, give me Hall, Conwell (or maybe Dix), and Sarr. After that you'll just need some rotation pieces (i.e solid backup big, maybe extra shooter off the bench if a lot more guys leave).

As the roster currently stands, imo they'll need 3 big time gets (Sarr included).

He also is a mediocre free throw shooter. If you can't shoot a free throw well, how are we supposed to believe you can knock down a midrange shot with efficiency?

This is what happens when you play Ben Humrichous over a talent that is going to be All-Conference Floor/All-American ceiling good by the time his college career is over.

This is avoided if he plays as much as he deserved from Day 1, not halfway thru the year.

In this day and age, it's all about managing the egos of players, and FAR more importantly, their respective inner circles.

Hate to be blunt, but this was 100% avoidable. And our staff continues to fumble these situations. Mind-boggling and beyond frustrating.

I concur completely my brother.....................excellent analogy of the state of affairs going on with the Illini program now........

2 players now in the portal and zero AC's being relieved of their duties so far........not off to a good start in the zany off seasons musings of the beloved.........

what's next ????????

stay tuned folks............more surprises coming for sure...........

MJ committed as a soph in hs , now gone after 1 season..........boggles the mind......it really really does........

Expecting two more transfers out, three at most. Kylan and Tomi are locked in for sure, as is Jason, I am leaning Ty staying over Tre right now as well. Still think 1/2 of Jake/Ben is back.
Ty staying would really make a lot of Illinois fans (myself included) feel a lot better. Also is RJ Luis a guy we could be looking at? Probably the best player in the portal but what’s he even looking for?

Welp... two starters, one of them a seasoned upperclassman, who clocked ~ 30 mins per game this season returning for next fall beats one dude, a true freshman, with 7 mins/game as the only returner last fall by a mile, I suppose.
