As of last night, both Tomi and Kylan talked with the staff and told them they are coming back. Tomi's deal is pretty much done, just working on some small details. Both are locked in barring something crazy changing. The staff is working their assess off in the portal right now. OA is getting close with a couple of bigs, they have a wing targets in mind along with Dix (decision expected later this week), and things with Sarr are still looking very positive. DGL should be entering soon, Ty still up in the air. Will see on Jake/Ben. Should start to get commitments soon.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Tomi declare just to get feedback, but highly likely he's back.
Like a year ago people were saying that Zach Edey wasn’t allowed to get NIL due to being an international student. Obviously I don’t think KJ, Reilly and Tomi were playing here for just a scholarship last season. What changed so quickly to where international guys seem fully a part of the NIL game?

Crazy feels like the definition of this short offseason so far.

But appreciate the info as always!

Is he our big fish?
Wow. Is there a downside on this guy other than he'd presumably be very expensive? Never heard of him but on paper he looks amazing. Although he's listed as a senior but I only see 2 years of stats?? How much eligibility does he have?

edit: is the downside that he might get drafted? lol

Checked out player for a checked out coach, maybe they could make a movie about it
Movie promo guy voice:

Brad Underwood was a high profile college coach until a new rule changed everything. After he got fired for missing the big dance he started his own bed and breakfast.

One fateful night, a big storm canceled all flights and caused AJ, the big recruit he missed out on to show up at his bnb with his new team. That night the entire coaching staff got terrible food poisoning and were hospitalized.

The big game was two nights away and Brad and AJ, who was benched, band together to try to win the championship. Can both player and coach get checked in before it's too late?

Find out in the sports thriller of the year "Checked Out" starring Brad Underwood and AJ Storr. And featuring Buddy the Dog from Air Bud as Bill Self and Mose Schrute as Hunter Dickinson.

Tomi is 21. What are the odds he's gone even if he's a 2nd round pick?
Age/Potential is definitely THE thing for NBA Scouts, but bigs that shoot the 3 well are probably 2nd right now no matter the age. I think another full year where he shoots >35% from 3, gets more physical, and works on his post play and he can be a 20th - 30th pick for a “win now” team.

From a financial standpoint point thats what they should do. They should do to take care of themselves financially. Basically find their value in both the professional and college NIL markets unless there is a number they would happy to take at the U of I and we will meet that mark. I am a life long Illini Fan but if my kid was borderline to make the NBA then get it while you can because when your time in the NIL is done you wont get it back. For many (like Coleman) they may more here annually then ever again.

I mean from Tomi's perspective. He's a Fr. in name only. He's more of a Jr in reality. He may be saying, I've only got so many years in me. If I can get to the NBA now, I'm taking it. A 19 year old could be more likely to say, I'm 2nd round now, but if I go back to school I can be a 1st rounder.

It's a money thing - Will returning means mid 2 mil hit to our line. Sarr is high 1s, borderline 2 with Duke pushing for him. Tomi & Kylan will command 7 figures as well. Just not enough to fill out a roster unfortunately.

We are deep but not Arkansas, IU, Kansas deep.
Any idea where we rank in the big ten. Obviously, Indiana is ahead of us based on your comment.
Really feel sorry for the directional schools. What is the point of being D1 school at say Western Illinois.

I know winning is the key benchmark, but just to play devil's advocate here; in one of our "middling" years of 2024-2025, we're set to finish 17th in Kenpom, which is essentially in the top 5% of all of college basketball. Still not great, but IMO not worth the 5-alarm fire sentiment some are showing here.

In terms of continuity, I don't think next year can be completely written off as suboptimal yet. If we return Boswell, Ivisic, DGL (sounds like its not likely), Humrichhouse, and Jake Davis, this would be 52% continuity, around 20% above average. Take out DGL, this is 44.6%. If you add Ty back in (on the off chance he stays), this is another 11% back in (although this would be an astrick). Even if you only keep Bam and Tomi, this is 27% continuity, which is 6% below average, but this is coming off a year where you're sending 2 players to the draft.

All I'm saying is if we're being conservative and looking at the data objectively, our continuity will definitely be better than last year, and at worst case suboptimal but best case as of now still well above NCAA average.
All fair points. A lot to be determined still regarding next years returning minutes.

By middling, I meant relative to our history, not relative to the field. 22 wins and a 6 seed would be a pretty good season for most schools. 22 wins and a 6 seed at Illinois is probably very close to our median season over the last 40 years.

Legit in what way? Indy just posts players that hit the portal that he likes.
