I got nothing against Sampson. I love the way his teams play. In fact, I wish Guenther had gone with his initial thoughts on replacing Self in 2023 with Kelvin S. I realize Sampson stole Eric Gordon from Illinois and Weber in 2023 but my understanding it was the Gordons who played Weber.
Of the four coaches in the FF, two of them have received Show Cause penalties . . . Sampscum for 5 years in 2008, Satan for 3 years in 2011.

But Sampson had other recruiting improprieties at IU too. He was no saint.

I’m with you though, he would have been a solid hire. IIRC, the old German got mad because Sampson’s people leaked out the upcoming meeting. Guenther was just a cranky old man, making a knee jerk decision. If Sampson came here, definitely would have needed to run (or appear to run) a clean ship. Doubt he would have.

One thing that’s quite apparent after watching these E8 games are how much smarter these teams play than us.

They don’t have two guys jumping for a block that they have close to no chance of getting, instead they maintain position for the rebound (Morez, Tomi, Ben all had this problem).

They don’t have guys contesting shots that they have no chance to defend without fouling because they get there to contest too late (Tomi, Morez).

They generally make the easy pass and not the home run pass. Value the basketball and possessions much more than we did.

Their defenses are also tough as nails with correct rotations and play physically without fouling.

We either need to go after players with higher BBIQ or coach them on how to make smarter plays.
We also didn't have one player on our entire roster that would start on any of those teams. You could have a prime John Wooden coaching us. The talent gap between us and that group of four is..... significant.

I was at our first and second round games and was 6 rows off the floor. You don't get a true appreciation of these size of all of these guys on TV.

Against KY, physically, outside of Boswell.....we looked like boys playing men and in reality, we were. It was a bunch of seniors and grad students playing against a team where a couple of guys were a year removed from being in gym class and having a lunch period.

Everyone one of those Final.Foir teams are KY on steroids. Let's just leave it there and forget the X's and O's for a year.

Hey why don't we have a College Basketball Crown thread? Adam Miller is finally seeing postseason action again four years after leaving our program.

The first game was actually really good, the second game was good then got out of hand.

Houston started the year 4-3.
They are currently on a 30-1 run. I do think Duke wins but Houston has to have a ton of confidence.

Florida is the only Illinois neutral coach?
Scamson-> IDKWTI
Scheyer-> Weber diss
Satan-> Program wrecker
Weber diss? Too funny.

For the most part, I’m not a fan of Duke, but it has nothing to do with a recruiting loss. Heck, if I subscribed to this approach, I’d have to hate half the teams in America because of recruiting results during the Groce years.

NIL going to make this more common.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's true for the FF level teams, but I think good coaching and finding the right players can go a long way --certainly enough to get to a S16. I wouldn't be surprised to see Cinderella redefined for the NIL era.

Also, I think what makes a good coaching staff is getting redefined. Evaluating and recruiting players within a set of financial constraints, brining in guys you can both unify and challenge once everyone's on board, as well as coaching them to a system, are going to be more important than ever.

Does anyone see a scenario where Houston competes and actually beats Duke?

Absolutely. There is no team in college basketball like them. Guys all over the place on defense. Seems like 6 on 5 when they are on defense. And they have multiple guys that shoot over 40% from 3.

Not sure if the right place to share this, but I have been saying what Ant says here for years. It is time for the B10 to seriously evaluate its product and whether it is favorable over a full season for post season success. Methinks they are only concerned with getting the maximum amount of teams IN, results be damned.

And do what exactly?

And do what exactly?
Do not call touch fouls out front when no advantage is gained by the defensive player, then let guys pound on each other in the lane. Do call obvious shoulder clear outs under the basket that gains the offensive player space to shoot. Do NOT anticipate calls on a defensive player who goes straight up against a shooter who is moving into the defensive player. Do not anticipate or reward flops by three point shooters. Do not give most teams in the league a 10-12 point advantage at home while often putting the visitor's most important player(s) in early foul trouble; make calls straight up. Let the players play and establish a flow to the game without incessant unnecessary whistles, especially early in games. And call games consistently from one half to the next.

Just a couple of things off the top of my head. I'm sure I could come up with more.

Not the Final Four, but flipping through my YTTV and decided to watch a little of the Crown game between Villanova and Colorado because reasons.

About 28 people in attendance. Who thought this was a good idea???
