This market and the potential high costs for obviously flawed folks is just steering me further and further into the Bielema model of investing in relationships and paying to retain talent than heavily investing in more ready-made players in the portal that are only associated with your program based on a financial agreement.
This didn't age well ;)

What's happened here is attrition. Teams are being left completely vacant of talent (like Baylor) and now that creates an urgency to fill out a roster. Teams are more willing to overpay, especially for high-end talent, because there will only be so much of it. The value of all players rises as a result. "THis guy got 1.5M? Well I score more than he does so I should get the same!" This is why this whole system is unsustainable. There is money out there for these players, but that money isn't going to be there forever. Not to mention sometimes you hit up donors to update your facilities, and now those donors are almost directly paying these guys. It's not some infinite money tree. Something is going to bottleneck eventually and donors are going to say no, especially if the team they're paying doesn't win. Then what happens?

This whole system is going to collapse in on itself, and some of these players are going to be left holding the bag and going to a program they didn't want because the money will have dried up.
We need Shauna Green to take over recruitment.

Are we in Sarr or bust territory yet?

I know I'll get flack for this, but if I'm going off vibes I think we end up with an average squad for next year. I just don't have the faith in this staff that I do in the football side of the house.
Illinois football making an elite 8 equivalent sounds impossible so I'm not sure what you're smoking.

Though I do agree with the premise that we are in trouble if we don't get Sarr.

With the numbers floating around about Miller and other “possible bench targets” for Illinois being $1M+, I wonder if there staff is second guessing not working harder to keep Tre White…

The fact this staff/head coach/AD has raised the bar so much here we’re mad a 20+ win season will have us average and firmly in the top half of the tournament again is exactly why I do have faith in this staff.

Sarr would be a huge coup and is the difference making piece. The question really is what's the Plan B if that can't work.

We are a big time perimeter scorer short, that's clear.
I agree but I don't think Sarr is that big time perimeter scorer.

I love Sarr but I think it's more the total package and defensive upside rather than be a dominant perimeter scorer or super high usage guy.

I think Sarr would bring a ton of length and explosiveness on the perimeter which is definitely needed and will help make the defense more versatile by being able to switch 1-4. Offensively, I kind of expect him to play off ball more often than not. You know the type of guy that scores in transition, off of cuts, and attacking closeouts.

Sarr plus a veteran perimeter scorer and I think it's a roster that can compete with anyone. Just Sarr and some depth and I think it might be another up and down season that is somewhat similar to last year. Good team but not really a true threat to win the Big10 or make a deep run.

So we are going to rely on a freshman being our best player again? (Refer to Sarr) that has not worked for any team since Kentucky in 2012. Wish we could have an older more experienced player be our best player. But gotta trust the staff

Monsanto is also 6”6. Kid is a career 40% three point shooter, shot 41% on 8 attempts per game his junior year at Wake Forest.. can also provide more versatility defensively & rebound. He's everything we wanted in Ben.
What happened his last year at Wake? Injuries?

I like that. I am hoping that the idea of "higher expectations" is quite a little bit higher than last year. Don't get me wrong: last year was very good. However, there is quite a bit of ceiling above last year's fine results and peak accomplishment. Underwood talks peak, and is not happy with less. Good!

How might one avoid catastrophic injuries? Luck? I know of no other way, except ridiculous roster depth. In this era, roster depth is extremely difficult to build.

I’m not sure this board can handle another 3+ days without a commitment
