Still a vhance for Boynton? How involved was he with Morez going to scUM? I'd think that would be an awkward conversation if he was involved and we are working on him taking TA spot

I truly don't understand why Hamer or Tyler would be coaching again this year. The roster wasn't the problem and the year before you had Terrance Shannon Jr and Marcus Domask so scheme didn't really matter that much.
Will there be changes or additions to the staff for defensive scheme or even offensive? With the length we have at the 4 and 5 I would think playing some sort of zone over chasing people around ball screens would be better.

BU has changed the offensive scheme basically every year to fit the roster. He can be very stubborn in-season, but he has continually changed his philosophy in the off-season.

The TJ/Domask combo took off after a scheme change to the now well-known "Booty ball". I'd say scheme mattered a great deal...

Shoutout to Jay Wright & Micah Shrewsberry …

when you have those types of players they will make anything work. It didn't necessarily work this year with a bunch of freshman who didn't play college bball for four years already. My complaint isn't necessarily the offense but rather the defense. There is hardly ever a change that is made. The one change they did make when they beat Purdue was great (doubling big guy who was killing us all game) but I hardly ever saw any other changes early in the year. Adjustments matter, you can't just roll the ball back out after halftime and expect a different outcome. Drop coverage defense lost them the Kentucky game because that team could hit hard 2's, zero change was made after half time, just kept playing drop coverage D. That can't happen if you want to win a National Championship.

Brad is interesting study

Moved aggressively hire best possible assistants - Antigua Coleman and Gentry. The Tim Anderson, Chester. Alexander has done wonders recruiting. Orlando back. We will see what he does next. Certainly not in Henson or Weber mode of same assistants for 10-20 years.

Switched defenses when his old pressure defense got shredded first 2 years-> pack line-> drop-> overplay the 3

Recruited HS very well - Ayo, Kofi, Miller Sky, Morez etc.

Recruit non Illinois well - Kofi NY, Andre NY, Ty MI, Will Canada, Keaton KS Brandon NJ

Has change offenses multiple time - feed low post, pick and roll, 5 out, 50% 3's

Did well in portal - TSJ MM, Quincy Marcus Justin, Europe pivot - KJ, Tomas, Mircovic

Brad adapts quickly. Maybe the flip side to that is he does not stay with a certain philosophy style and see it thru. You can do it too far - Weber motion offense and man to man.

I think he did great job recruiting last year - lost 11 players and still won 20 games and was #6 seed NCAA. bit of bad luck with injuries (KJ, Morez) and sickness (Tomas) but if that is our floor its pretty good.

I think Brad will adjust again. One thing about college basketball with portal and $NIL - its a roller coaster ride. Lets see how good Dusty May and Michigan are next year. Every year is doom and gloom during recruiting. We have a good core back Kylan Tomas Ty and Jake (possible Ben), nice portal add Big Z and 3 good freshman Mircovic, Lee and Wagler. I am confident Brad will add two more good players. I am OK if one is Miller.

It is always a weird optic seeing Brad sitting next to Ty U. You would think Brad would talk more to older coaches about in game adjustments.

I am all for analytics. Everbody does them. If Illini has the wrong people doing analytics and putting together game plans then that is a problem. We seem weaker on in game adjustments.

The staff is more concerning to me right now than the recruiting misses. Thank you Kwa for filling in, but we need to fill the TA player development role. Then we need a true defensive coordinator guy. Tyler is good enough for the time being.

I do expect an addition to the staff based on some conversations last night …

The thought being let’s get the TA contract off the books at the EOTM and then bring in someone new …
Hope so. Stating the obvious, but a good staff makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts. That didn't happen this year.

So be it if the 3-point line is where our offense lives and dies, but we had NO defense (as evidenced by something like 8 guys having "career nights" against us).

Hopefully this new person runs the D. I can't take another year of my teens and pre-teens watching Illinois games, and then asking why we suck at defense and leave so many easy points open.

Please Brad & Josh. If you're reading this, I could really use a solid right now.

Yaklich taking the HC job at Lincoln Way East …

Think he likes the idea of actually coaching and developing kids and not all this portal nonsense … Likes the idea of getting more time with his family as well …
Do think he was approached by Illinois?

I always look forward to a new season, and I like that we have a combination of retention and some new talent. However, if I have to sit through another season of three chucking and matador defense, I had better start getting in shape, because it may give this aging big guy a heart attack.

In terms of relevance to the thread—please replace Hamer, I know Tyler isn’t going anywhere.

I'm sure he's made decent enough money the last few years to not be of super concern, but he's still under 50 years old.. Seems like an extremely odd move to go back to high school ball, especially for a public school.

Assuming this may be a year or two to reset then try to get back into the college setting? Even D3 or something would've made more sense than this imo.

All well and good, but the biggest issue with the staff continues to be that Hamer is still on it. While I’m looking forward to a new staff addition, it’s tempered by a clearly sub-standard assistant continuing to be on the staff with apparently no recognition of that by either the head coach or the AD.

If we happened to sign Sarr do we burn bridges with Barcelona? They are obviously not at all happy with him
