The 7 on 7 positions are much more skilled now and playing more sophisticated ball on the football side which leads to a higher "quality" game in many ways even as some of the fundamental skills of line play and tackling have declined due to concussion-related practice limitations.

In basketball though, guys can shoot better in general and the game has opened up from a refereeing perspective especially in places like the Big Ten, but lack of coherent rosters playing in the same system over time along with the dearth of NBA talent has made the quality of play quite noticeably worse I think.

But the quality of play in college has never been good, that's not why we love it. We love the tradition and the stakes and the passion. It's the strip mining of THOSE things that's really eroding the game.
There is a lot packed into the last paragraph. You are dead on with the last two sentences. Not sure I agree with the first sentence. College hoops in the 80's and 90's was high quality and very competitive.

There is a world where Ben is on our roster as long as Underwood is here....

A much better option for the Illini, as a couple of our insiders have suggested, is to sign both Andrej Stojakovic and Adam Miller. But I really would like for the Illini to add two more transfers to the roster: SG Kennard Davis Jr (SIU) and PG Isaiah Swope (SLU) [or PG Samage Teel of Indiana State]. Those 4 transfers, added to our existing players, would make for a very good roster in my opinion.

Thanks!

EDIT: The published sheet is caching in my browser... might have to hit refresh couple times
1) shift reload, or Ctl-Shift-R should force a reload immediately
2) If this is really happening people should report it to Google via the feedback mechanism. Having cached docs not update after changes is a major bug.

I can't quite figure out the argument that the players are not worth what they are getting. The only reason for all the TV money and ticket revenue is the players. Football and basketball coaches at state universities typically are the highest paid state or university employees. According to public records, Underwood made $4.8 M this season...and was paid a $335,000 bonus for the 2023-24 season. By comparison, the president of the U of I system makes a little over $900,000.
In the NBA, NFL and MLB, many players make more than the head coach/manager. Players using the facilities to improve their game is no different than any student that use classrooms, labs or the library. Add free tuition plus room & board for basketball and football players and they still bring in more money than they make. There are a lot of things wrong with the NIL and portal system, including lack of binding agreements. I'm certainly in the minority, but I'm happy that the players are finally getting paid a fair amount for what they bring in.
Suppose the top 100 college BB players all disappeared every year to the new Saudi league paying 10M/yr. Do you think the college hoops TV money and ticket revenue would disappear? If not, then it isn't the specific players generating the revenue. Pretty much any players will do so long as there is a general competitiveness across the teams. Competitive teams fill stadiums. They do not need to be top 10 or even top 25 in most cases.

@LvilleILL1 holding the board from entire meltdown during portal szn.
I've only been aware of/on this board for about a year but in that time, LvilleILL1 has become my emotional support animal. During the TSJ ordeal, there were a few contributors that helped because that situation was just impossible to get information on in the early days, but these roster construction days and portal season are nerve-wracking. Whoever you are, thanks for the crumbs you put out there for us.

I just don't understand all of the love for an Adam Miller transfer to Illinois. Especially given the "seven figure" cost, and his numbers from last season. 44.9% from the floor. An aberrational 3-point 42.9%. 9.8 ppg. Only 1.9 apg.
I hear you - I think it's the profile of a 4 year starter at high major schools, who shot 43% from three last year and is a known quantity and can be a good defender that checks a lot of boxes for what we need right now. In reality would he better than Donte Maddox from Xavier for example? probably not, but that profile is what we need

You have to sometimes look further than just the numbers you picked. If Miller does transfer back (at a reduced cost of what he could make elsewhere), then we are going to have a player that is really buying into his role on the team. Not to mention, he would be a supplemental cultural piece that we are looking for that is playing for the name on the front of the jersey. I do not see him being panned as a starter, so this would be a very high quality reserve player. Give him the opportunity to work for quality minutes, and I can only see the positives here.

When it comes to the cost you mention, the close to seven figure cost looks like it could be a bargain considering the inflated numbers we are hearing across the board elsewhere.

If we don't sign either Stojakovic or Miller, I think the Illini could add:

Malik Thomas, San Francisco, G, Sr, 6'5", 205 pounds, 19.9/3.9/2.1 and 44.4/39.4/85.1
Kennard Davis Jr, Southern Illinois, G, Soph, 6'6", 215 pounds, 16.3/4.9/2.6 and 45.5/37.6/76.3
Isaiah Swope, SLU, Sr, G, 5'10", 175 pounds, 17.1/3.2/4.2 and 43.3/35.9/75.6 OR
Samage Teel, Indiana State, Sr, G, 6'2", 185 pounds, 16.9/4.1/5.2 and 47.3/34.7/78.7
Josh Harris, North Florida, Frosh, F, 6'*', 210 pounds, 13.4/7.1/0.6 and 55.7/33.3/69.5

Again, that would be a decent roster IF (that's a BIG if) we miss out on all of Sarr, Watkins, and Stojakovic.
