So, our coaching staff is going to spend nearly 3 million for a player with questionable offensive efficiency numbers and for whom I haven't been able to find a scouting report that doesn't bring up his issues on the defensive end of the floor? Yikes.
Advanced basketball stats are not advanced baseball stats. Everything in basketball is influenced greatly by your teammates. You have to take them with a massive grain of salt. Some guys take tough shots because they want to be the star, and some guys take tough shots because they have to. I think he has been the latter.
Defense is something guys get better at. You rarely see freshmen or sophomores on the all defense team. He may never be great, but will likely get better.
He appears to be a better athlete than his dad, and his dad managed to play 800+ NBA games.
He’s got a couple of years Left to play NCAA ball, too.

Do you mean like KJ or Will last year? I’m not being snarky, I’m just putting it in context of players we know and love. Everyone on here was willing to pay $4M for Riley to return. Will shot 32% from three and 43% overall and was not good defensively. Very similar to Andrej, but Andrej average 5 more ppg than Will, got to the line more and is a better free throw shooter. I actually think the argument is very similar - Will is worth that because we saw glimpses of what he can be and we would expect him to make a leap next year - we know Will is a good shooter and would expect him to get better. Both highly rated out of HS and are still both on an upward trajectory of what they will be as a player

Ian Jackson is getting $4M apparently and he didn’t start for a mediocre UNC team- it’s the upside people are buying
I definitely see your points, and LvilleILL1's points as well. I didn't notice the blocks numbers before.
He ended last year with three really good games against ND, VT, and Stanford, so I hope that those games are indications of good things to come.
At the end of the day, I'm an Illini fan, so I hope that he finds a lot of success with us.

I came from a relatively wealthy family and they sure didn't give me much money, until I was old enough to start inheriting it. I even had to pay my own way for my BS from UIUC

Crazy. Morez is a higher ranked transfer per 247 and on3 and he got about half of that. Michigan did right by moving early and quickly.
Uh, 247 hasn't rated Andrej yet. And on3 has him rated as a 95, vs 94 for Morez.

Okay. Let's pay Stojakovic the $2.8-3.0M. Then let's pay Kennard Davis the $1.0-1.2M. And then use the remaining money (out of $5.5M total?), or approximately $1.7M to $1.3M, to sign (A) Nick Dorn, Sophomore CG, Elon, and (B) Samage Teel, Senior PG, Indiana State. Those 4 players would fill out the Illini roster very nicely.
I don’t think we’ll add four more guys given the current roster numbers, the $ that would take and guys wouldn’t come here if we are that crowded

If we get Andrej then we need a starting caliber SG and that could be a David, Dorn or Nate Johnson type. Then we might add a backup PG like Terrance Ford Jr. or someone like that if the staff doesn’t think Lee or Wagner can play that role yet.

Or we find more money and just add one more guy after Andrej like Watkins or get back in the Sarr sweepstakes in which case we’d be done at those two and live without another guard given Ty and Lee can do that

He's getting over a million ... Oregon is involved now and was in to see him ... Gonzaga still involved ... Baylor has a strong offer out to him ...

Texas was involved but they are on the lower side in terms of their offer ... Right about where we are ...

Really wish Adam would just tell Irvin to shove it and make his own decision ...
May I ask why Irvin is so influential in Ace's decision 3+ years after high school graduation? I can understand the influence while kids are on his team but surely it should have waned by now?

Also given last time, shouldn't he want to make his own decision rather than have his fam/coaches all in his head making things complicated?

Irvin is on staff at ASU and brought him there, but I was hoping for the same thing this time around.

Some guys will follow their coaches off a cliff, see where Chester Frazier has led his guys... or should I say guy now that he's abandoned Harris?

This is probably one of the biggest obstacles to being young in this position. Knowing who to trust and evaluating situations. Those are forged in experience and through battle scars.... These young men aren't always ready up for such things. I know I wasn't at that age. It is a huge aspect to this that can't be understated.

And Miller is in the Portal. That control should be nil now. It's entirely possible one of the other Irvins is now influencing things. I'm not sure I believe in the here and now that Miller is being influenced by any of the Irvins....

Ummm, I doubt this is what happened. Assistant coaches changing schools doesn't mean you get to bring a stable of guys with you from your old school. Methinks the Head Coach will approve/disapprove who comes along. Young may have approved Hansberry but not Harris. Who knows? Perhaps Sencire Harris just wanted a completely clean slate, no Illinois, no former coaches from UI or WV. Cincinnati is a pretty decent landing spot. Maybe he wants a fresh set of coaches to try and get more out of him than the staffs at UI and WV were able to get?

I agree with this post x1000. I an more concerned and Disgusted that we have not gotten rid of 3 young assistants and moved on. Cultural and perception are Massive.

The price for Andrej is over $3 million as of this evening ...
Here's what has me confused. Where are the Justin Harmons this year? Give me a flyer on a 6.6ft wing and 2 guards at 6.3.or 6.4 for 3 million. From lower conference. Coach em up and round out team. Are JHarmons from N. Texas st. over a million now?

Good comments as always, HH71. If Illinois only adds three more players, Cal Sophomore SF/SG Andrej Stojakovic would clearly be the #1 get! SIU Sophomore SG/SF Kennard Davis Jr (in my opinion) should be the "starting caliber SG", and I think that Arkansas State Sophomore Guard Terrance Ford Jr (from Chicago) would be an excellent choice for the backup PG role for the Illini.

Those three additions would give the Illini a roster of 13 scholarship players for the 25-26 season. I think that would be a very solid team! But if the Illini had enough money left over for one additional player, say someone like 6'6" 225-pound Senior Guard Damari Monsanto of UTSA, don't you think he could fit in easily in a 3-point shooting role for the Illini next season? Or is it your opinion that Monsanto would just take away developmental minutes from Wagler and/or Lee?

I get that but I was hoping decision of a highschooler and his coach vs veteran college player and his assistant coach would be vastly different.

To be fair, the OP was correct about On3 they have Morez at 35 and Andrej at 36 - as many others have pointed out, these rankings beyond the very top guys are very suspect, it seems they are done by a low level analyst that needs to put a ranking on a kid 24 hours after they announce- they have Swain from Xavier right after Andrej for example- Swain avg 11 ppg on 25% 3pt on the season and he isn’t getting $3M offers from Duke

I think we will still see guys walk on, just because, BUT if I were a fringe guy, like say Latulip was, I'd go to a lower level to dominate, then get paid to move up a level.

But I do think you'll still see guys who are good at basketball, but don't really want to play lower level college basketball, and want to go to certain colleges, so they decide to be part of the team and walk on.
I mean Latulip didn't even dominate as a 5th year senior at Wright State.

I think the only real difference is that you can just give walk-ons/practice guys a scholarship since there is no limit.

You may as well just fill up those last roster spots with in state kids like Jakstys that may never contribute but fill the same role as walk ons and maybe you get lucky on one or two developing.

Oh weird. I couldn't find those rankings so I was going off these numbers also on the on3 site:
