The guy who's a three-star? On3 projects him most likely to Northern Illinois, with Eastern and Western as next most likely. I want you to think about that for a second and come back with why I should care about a player with that sort of recruitment profile.

we've offered. if Brad decides he's a take, I'm more than good with it

recruiting rankings are hardly science

I think, Boswell aside, nearly the entire team has at least two years of eligibility left. Barring NBA opportunities, 26/27 could be an even stronger team than this coming year without any additions. All five of the 'Balkan's' could come back along with Jake, Ty, and this year's Freshmen. Ben? Who knows. But despite the annual portal exit trend, I would think the 'Balkan' players would prefer to stay together and Ty seems committed to the program. Am I wrong? This could be the oldest, most experienced team in the country.

so, Lincoln Williams, a kid who's visited myriad times, is a hard pass now because he's playing AAU for MIF? GMAB
Williams is in the ranking range of the kids we take these days so definitely plausible. I don't think MIF has too much leverage for this type of recruitment but they transfer all the time anyway.

I thought it had nothing to do with stars and that there was a really poor experience between Brad & him when they watched a game this past year.

Will is #27 in latest CBS draft....coming back to college, we can match the money he would make at that ranking. He is coming back baby!
All dependent on draft outlook! Per 25/26 rookie salary scale (pre-set by NBA players association), if drafted #27 his base pay will be ~$2.4M/yr for his first 2 yrs (guaranteed), but is variable from 80% - 120% of that base, as negotiated between player and team before he signs (several notes I found suggest players usually get most of the upside). Regardless the agreed amt is guaranteed for the first 2 yrs. The team then has the option for yrs 3 and 4 at preset increases before he becomes an unrestricted in year 5.

This $$ sounds low vs some NIL offers, but there are other perks to weigh (medical, endorsements, various other), and, if he performs well his pay would significantly increase yr 5 and beyond…though average career length for nba rookies is only around 5-6yrs, obviously much longer for star players.

Now…if he goes #20 as most mocks suggest, his base rises to ~$3.1M/yr (again, guaranteed for first 2 yrs) with same ranges.

If he goes #15, base rises to ~$4M/yr…guaranteed 2 yrs.

And, if he comes back to IL and goes #10 next yr, his 2 yr guarantee rises to ~$5.2M/yr. So he could double his $$ vs #27 this yr

So you can see his choice is not a simple/easy one.

I'll bite. Northern Eastern Western ... portal.

Good luck with that plan.

I trust Brad, but as an aside, we've sent out 44 offers according to 247. I'm actually not sure what happens if too many players accept but I guess that's not a concern because we do this every year, but my point is an offer doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot.

I guess these days you can follow up an offer that’s accepted with a dollar amount that’s insulting, assuming you wish to rescind the offer without actually rescinding it.

Deliver what? We’ll likely be ranked between 20-30 preseason, which accurately reflects our talent. You’re way overestimating what we have if you think we should make the Elite Eight. While it could happen, a reasonable expectation for next year is lose in the 2nd or 3rd Round.
Thennnnnn we failed in the recruiting/retention/portal game, period. If we are entering next season resigned to a Second Round loss, we have lost the plot. That would be 5 out of 6 NCAAT appearances that haven’t resulted in a trip to the Sweet Sixteen. That’s not great.

Agreed, in this age of free agency, there is no developmental program. Whether it is us or someone else, these players are jumping to the highest bidder at the end of the season. If they are not, they haven’t shown enough to garner demand nor will they probably help us at a high level. Until something changes with NIL, with our dollars, there is no reason we shouldn’t compete at the highest level every year! That should be the expectation! Brad has proven he can bring players in; however, he (his coaches) haven’t shown we can coach them up and fine tune all of the pieces. Everyone is playing by the same rules, time to make it happen.

Where did the theory that we have a "just in case bag" stashed away? It's been pretty well documented (Werner and Piper) that we're pretty much tapped out...unless a situation arises where the right fit were to come along in a back up capacity.

Did I miss something regarding a Will Riley fund hanging out there?

There is next to no chance Petrovic will have more than 1 year of eligibility

@IlliniFan42: the Irvins (especially, Nick) aren't highly regarded by the fanbase. that doesn't mean we should stop recruiting kids in their AAU program. kinda like cutting off your nose to spite your face. would I rather have them playing for another program? sure. but it is what it is. plus, let's not pretend that these kids are widgets: everyone has a different story. the Irvins' influence over Williams is probably radically different than Cleveland. we should recruit the kids we've targeted regardless of their AAU affiliation. if a kid's camp proves to be too much trouble, time to cut bait

Most of the mock drafts I have seen have Will Riley going late 1st round or early 2nd. If this is the case there is no doubt that it makes more sense for him financially and professionally to return to Illinois where he can get stronger and bigger with the best strength and conditioning coach in the country and have another year to improve his game in the areas the NBA scouts are saying. Get a $3 million bag along the way and be a lottery pick in 2026. I disagree with the pundits who say there is a 0 or 1% chance he returns. There is a reason Brad is saying he’s most likely done right now and that reason is very much the same as it was last season when he held a big bag back until late May for WR.
