People have trouble wrapping their head around inflation when it comes to large numbers. Some stuff at McDonald's has doubled in price (or more) over the past few years. Why shouldn't recruits cost twice as much?

Or put another way- $1 million to a billionaire is $1,000 to a millionaire. You just have to consider the net worth of the donor class to understand how little this money means to them.

Disagree. If they worked hard for the money it likely means more to them than if they didn’t. There’s not a direct correlation between wealth and frivolous spending.

It's not frivolous spending, it's "treat yourself" money. Some people save to afford sports tickets, others save to afford sports teams. I'd argue paying to get your team to the Final Four is far less frivolous than paying to see them there, even though the former takes a lot more money.

The money has gotten bigger, even from a year ago when people here were wondering if Christie might come.

At the same time, it's a huge risk for a kid to not enter the portal under those circumstances. Whatever money we have to bring him back is also available for another top talent.

Let's say that Riley tells the staff that he'd consider coming back for 2.5 but wants to wait until closer to the withdrawal date. Let's also say that Sarr tells them tomorrow that he'll come for 2.5. What does the staff do? Take Sarr I assume. Now Riley is homeless if he drops out.
Sounds like both freshman redshirt...

Unlikely …. even at 3 mil he might not be worth it…. might not put the numbers up. As good as Will was last year… the numbers were not as good as a s**t ton up upperclassmen. Great for a Freshmen. Sarr will play D1 ball but how well he does at his at age???Huge talent no doubt. A lot of these young highly regarded players have a big ceiling, but we won’t see it in a single year.
Think of it this way: Who helps you most: Braden Smith or Will or KJ? Easy answer BS ….but yet a second round pick! He is better for a March run but wont draft as high.
My 2 cents for the day🙂

Unless you're the guy who dropped the money for Storr and then all your buddies mock you as your investment rots on the bench

Well, of course. But the point remains that the Will money would be available for another player as we watch this all play out.
your missing the point completely. the Will money is available for no other player not named Will. it is separate $$ aside that will be allocated to no one but him if he wishes to come back.
No, teams don't operate under a "strict cap" but they operate under a practical cap.

And there is no benefit to us for holding a money aside for a particular player. That puts our roster construction under the power of the player.

But I like how we've now progressed from "I wonder if there's a chance to get Will back" to "We can afford both Sarr and Will." At which point we add in Boogie Fland and start using A1 to generate fun Magnificent 7 memes.
it's actually the opposite. should be a coaches dream to have the donors willing to sell out at the utmost necessity. you build your team with the thought he isn't coming back (which we have done) and then just in case he is, "hey, here's your potential All American."

oh and, I'm not sure a single person claimed the second bolded. the sarr ship has long sailed, and i'd argue we've probably ended up in a better spot.

Please post McDonald's pricing on here. I really want to dig into that material.

Not if a donor says "I'll give you this but only for Riley."

You take Sarr. Then you go back and tell the donors Will Riley wants to come back and we’re starting a natty in the eye when he does. They give you more money.

Then you tell Ben and Jake we love you, thanks for coming back, but your roles will be greatly diminished now. Jake redshirts. Ben plays 3-5 minutes a game on a D1 national championship team his last year of college basketball and reflects on how lucky he is to go from the lowest levels to the absolute mountain top.

I think his mom is going to have a lot to say about this. She has said he is not ready for the NBA. If he is anywhere near say 25? It will be an interesting next 2-3 weeks.
