If I were to take over the football program, I would have these as our regular helmet and uniform combos

Arched Illini
Standard O/B/O
O
/B/B

Slanted Illinois
O/O/O
O
/W/O
O
/W/B

Butkus era helmets and jerseys (for Homecoming)
O/B/O or O/B/W

Script Illinois for bowl games
This really isn't my favorite helmet. But I think it could be something nice to do for bowl games. Imagine a rose running underneath the script Illinois...

For fun, here are a few uniform combos worn in recent photos from recruiting visits that we have never seen on the field:

I do remember one recruit utilizing our long-awaited O/W/B combo to the delight of Team #BPOTR everywhere ... but I can't find it, lol.
The Arch with the white uni looks awesome. By far my favorite helmet, would love a rotation of ILLINOIS, arched, and the Block I. For the script fans, I'm good with it once a year for the orange out. The script is overhyped.

I like the exercise, and I think this would be mine. I'll use next year's schedule as a template, as I have done in the past. I'm also using whatever rankings are on the FB Schedules website to give some sort of signal to what might be a "big game" or whatever.

O/B/O and Script Illinois vs. Western Illinois
O/W/O and Slant ILLINOIS at Duke
O/B/O and Script Illinois vs. Western Michigan
O/W/B and Arched ILLINI at #17 Indiana
O/O/W and Slant ILLINOIS vs. USC (Homecoming)
O/W/O and Script Illinois at Purdue
O/B/B and Arched ILLINI vs. #1 Ohio State
O/W/O and Slant ILLINOIS at Washington
O/B/O and Script Illinois vs. Rutgers
O/B/O and Veterans Day Slant ILLINOIS vs. Maryland
O/W/B and Arched ILLINI at Wisconsin
O/B/W and Script Illinois vs. Northwestern

And so as not to muck up the list above, here are a few of my thoughts behind the decisions:
- Yes, I am doing away with the Block I helmet ... I just don't think it is anywhere near as cool as the other ones. I would effectively make Script Illinois our default home helmet and Slant ILLINOIS our default away helmet, with Arched ILLINI used for select big games.
- On that note, it only feels right to walk out on the field vs. Western Illinois as defending Citrus Bowl champs, wearing that same uniform that won us that 10th game!
- The Indiana game will be hyped, and it is the perfect time to bust out #BPOTR, especially since the O/W/B combo gives the best contrast when we are playing an away game vs. a team with red as its primary color. The Arched ILLINI helmet, as previously stated, would be a bit of a "big game" signifier.
- My pick for the USC game is the most controversial. I REALLY feel that we should always wear O/B/O for Homecoming, but this is really our only option for an Orange Out game, as you are playing with fire for any post-September date given how crazy the weather can be. So, the USC game gets the Orange Out treatment. I also am simply a big believer that our current white pants would look great with the orange uniform, given the stripes ... I am not an O/O/O supporter.
- For that Purdue away game, I just wanted to see what the Script helmet would look like with the white uniform at least once!
- The look for the OSU game is meant to be our best "night game look," as I hope that one gets primetime. Also, I feel it is a callback to looks we had in the 1980s with the navy pants at home and the Arched ILLINI helmet!
- For that Maryland game, I would want to see that Veterans Day-themed Slant ILLINOIS we wore this year vs. Minnesota. However, I would want it with the navy uniforms just to get to see that look once.
- Bust out the same big game #BPOTR look for our trip to Madison, as Wisconsin has the same good color contrast with us like Indiana.
- I could take or leave the Northwestern decision here, I just like the idea of having some uniform combo that is only worn for one specific game ... and I admit I am simply curious to see the O/B/W combo with our current white pants.

Fighter is definitely the de facto analyst of Illini uniforms. Always interesting and informative. Thanks for making the effort.

I’m just not a fan of white shirts and pants together. Never have been, particularly when our orange and blue colors are so good.

After seeing some of these photos, I really want to see blue pants with the white jersey and the arched Illini for the Indiana game. That just might be our new leader in the clubhouse for best uniform combination. Would love to actually see it on the field.

I'm not a big fan of the all white look either, but I do like the white helmet with the script Illinois.

Western Illinois...

... Northwestern
Cool idea, and thanks for posting! Having the visuals is really great. I'll try to figure out how to Frankenstein these images into my own picks on a different day, but my comments would be:

1. While I have come to appreciate the Slant ILLINOIS helmet a bit more after last year (it had an especially good outing for the KU night game!), I still don't love it with our navy jerseys ... I just think it works better with white on the road. If there were ever a time to wear Slant ILLINOIS with navy at home, I think it would be for a day where we are honoring the 2007 team (perhaps in 2027??) and we bust out an O/B/W plus Slant ILLINOIS combo to pay tribute to that era. In other words, for the "average" O/B/O home games like Western Illinois, Western Michigan, Northwestern, etc., I would wear either Block I or Script helmets.

2. I pretty adamantly hate the white pants on the road look we have, so I have to disagree with your choices for Indiana and Wisconsin. However, I will add two caveats. Firstly, if we ARE ever going to wear "all white" on the road, it should be with a white helmet, like you have for the IU game. If people have an issue with the white helmet, then I think they should make peace with white pants on the road not being our thing ... I just think white jersey plus white pants plus NOT white helmet is an awful look in general for uniforms. Secondly, however, I will admit that the CLOSEST version of the latter look that might actually work is O/W/W with the Arched ILLINI helmet, which you have for Wisconsin. I saw that in a recruit visit photo and was shocked how much better it worked than O/W/W with our other helmets ... but I am still not sure it works for me. In general, we should always wear orange or navy pants with our white jersey.

3. While I L-O-V-E that you are a fellow member of Team #BPOTR and incorporated an O/W/B combo, I like the idea of that being for "big road games" and thus would not use it for Purdue, necessarily. I think we should utilize the navy pants on the road especially often when the home team wears red to provide better contrast, so that would be my uniform pick for the Indiana and Wisconsin away games. I also think Arched ILLINI would easily look the best with this combo, and I am dying to see it.

4. While I will admit that I was really surprised by how good the all orange uniform looked with our current design, I still would prefer the O/O/W combo ... so put me down as a fan of your look vs. Rutgers. I just feel like the B/O/B stripe on our white pants really pops and would look great with that orange jersey.

5. I have no super strong feelings about the O/B/B combo other than I think it looks really sharp. I would tend to favor it being used for night games at home, but obviously those don't pop up that often.

To your first point, I agree. Per my response above, I firmly believe that any "all-white" look has to be, ya know ... all white. There is no look in college football I hate more than when a team has a colored helmet with white pants and a white jersey ... it doesn't achieve the "all-white" look, and it just looks weird and bad. As for your second point, AGREED! I am dying to see that look, and the Indiana road game (what will likely be a hyped game vs. an opponent whose primary color is red) is the PERFECT opportunity.

Am I the only one who wants to see orange helmet, orange jersey, blue pants?
I mean, hey, I would be interested in seeing anything once ... but I think that is easily our most visually bizarre combo. When I think of classically good uniform combos, teams almost always have their pants as the lighter of their two primary colors and their jersey as the darker of their two primary colors (except, obviously, with the white jersey for away games). Flipping it just always looks a little weird to me. FWIW, I don't think our last debut of O/O/B looked very good, lol...

Obviously, to each his own! For me, the white pants with the orange jersey is just such a clean look that doesn't overdo the orange and gives us the excuse to occasionally wear our great white pants that doesn't (A) turn us into a team that wears white pants with our primary home jersey, which we traditionally don't do and (B) prevents us from utilizing the white pants on the road, which I really don't like.

Okay, turns out that wasn't as difficult as I thought! This would be my pick, with some notes added:

vs. Western Michigan: Standard home uniform for the year ... I say we ditch the Block I helmet, haha.
1 - Western Illinois.jpeg

at Duke: Same uniform combo we wore for our first big road win at Nebraska last season.
2 - Duke.jpeg

vs. Western Michigan: Standard home.
3 - Western Michigan.jpeg

at Indiana: Arched ILLINI and #BPOTR for a huge road game, very possibly in primetime.
4 - Indiana.jpeg

vs. USC: I was very conflicted wearing anything other than O/B/O for Homecoming, but this will really be our only weather-cooperating opportunity for an Orange Out game. As we all know, our crowds get noticeably more navy as it gets colder, lol ... and the next big home game isn't until mid-October vs. Ohio State, and you are testing your luck with weather there.
5 - USC.jpeg

at Purdue: Same combo as the Duke away game, effectively our "default" road uniform.
6 - Purdue.jpeg

vs. Ohio State: Although I was not around back then, Arched ILLINI with the O/B/B combo at home just screams nostalgia for great Illini football memories from the 1980s. Considering this very well may be a primetime matchup at home, I think this look would look awesome under the lights.
7 - Ohio State.jpeg

at Washington: For some reason, changing up our road look for a West Coast trip and busting out the Script helmet made sense to me here.
8 - Washington.jpeg

vs. Rutgers: Standard home.
9 - Rutgers.jpeg

vs. Maryland: I really liked our new take on the Veterans Day helmet that wasn't just an American flag Block I, and we have worn orange with that helmet the last two years, no? I figured this is another opportunity for the orange jersey (but no orange pants, sorry!!).
10 - Maryland.jpeg

Part 2...

at Wisconsin: Same look as the big game at Indiana, plus they are also red.
11 - Wisconsin.jpeg

vs. Northwestern: Standard home for Senior Day.
12 - Northwestern.jpeg

Postseason HOME: Gotta roll with the same look that won us the Citrus Bowl!
13 - Bowl Home.jpeg

Postseason AWAY: Obviously a #BPOTR big game moment, but the Script is busted out for the postseason.
14 - Bowl Away.jpeg

Posting these has made me simultaneously realize that (A) I actually really like our current uniform combo and (B) they would look SO much better with classic font block letters rather than what we have there now.

Great work as always @Fighter of the Nightman.

I was in school during the Zook years and appreciated the slant Illinois with blue outline.

That said, I would personally like to see the orange helmet with script/cursive Illinois become the primary helmet option going forward. It is something new but also classic looking. The OBO, OOW, OOB, OWO, OWB, and OWW would all look great as uniform sets.

Hmmm, interesting take/comment.... I'm gonna have to give this some thought. Can you expand on that a bit? I guess maybe outline what you mean by 'jerseys match pants'? Same color, different colors but complimentary, design (striping/accent consistency?) regardless of color scheme? Is this a roundabout way of saying it's okay if the Jersey/pants don't match as long as the helmet matches the jersey? Or maybe that jersey/pants matching is fine as long as the helmet matches as well?

My head hurts now..... lol. I honestly often get bored with the uniform talk at times. Though I do have my faves. And I get that we all have our pet peeves, mine just fall in other areas of the Illinois/NCAA sports spectrum.

Helmets shouldn’t match jerseys unless jerseys match pants.
while I can appreciate the take, if you’re extending this to the absolute travesty that was the metallic orange helmet, I could not be further on the other side of the fence.

Under no circumstances should you have multiple shades of the same color on a jersey/helmet. It looks bush league.

It has really bugged me the way the gold helmets and gold pants for Notre Dame has clashed since they switched to Under Armor. The metallic helmet, while looking fine on its own, looks terrible when set to the same-but-different color pants.
