If his agent was indeed talking to other teams in an effort to get him more money… it worked. Why would he stop?
Not in the know of the fine print, but I assume the buyout increased for programs that would try to "pouch" him. That would take away some of the leverage that the agent may try to work in talking to other teams to get more money out of Illinois. Of course the agent could be listening and talking at all times; but at this point, I would expect contractual raises and extensions to be based on performance rather than pressure to up salary based on what other team's would offer. In my view, it is a win-win for the DIA and Brad. Both sides are committed to each other, and I see no path where Brad ups and leaves Illinois.

To be clear, I do not fault Brad's agent for talking to other teams (he should...it is his job). I would have more issues if the coach was the one directly doing the communicating. I guess my point was not clear. There was anxiety that Brad would leave Illinois because the agent was talking to other programs (in prior threads earlier this offseason and the one before). I think any chatter about Brad leaving because of the agent exploring openings should be considered just noise moving forward.

Oh good, we no longer have to worry about him leaving us for UMKC.

I think these would go hand-in-hand. If Brad continues to produce in court, his agent would have leverage. If he doesn’t, the leverage is lessened. And you’re right that the buyout amount makes Brad a tougher sell to most schools, but who’s to say that in a couple of years that amount won’t seem absurdly low… just like we’ve seen with NIL amounts.

That will be interesting to keep monitoring. With the House Settlement adding expenses to programs starting relatively soon, I expect that budgets will be tighter going forward. However, that is likely to only hurt the lower revenue sports the most. At some point the runaway costs has to slow down or stabilize...right?

In any event, the Illini are well positioned relative to many peers. The upcoming year is shaping up to be the most excited I have been for both football and basketball. Truly a remarkable turnaround led by Josh.

For many reasons which have been endlessly discussed on this site, I still think Brad is the wrong guy. From a long term perspective, he is clearly the right guy. From a short term perspective, not so much.

I’ll shut up now and hope that I won’t be back on here to do anything but cheer in the coming season.

Brad's agent is doing his job and doing it well.

I didn't mind the extension as long as it didn't affect the buyout, but it remains high.

We always have dudes. I"m just thirsty for better schemes on both ends. (millions of mentions prior on this board)
Hopefully it happens, but I have been hoping for awhile so......

I guess Chris Beard or Nate Oats is a pipe dream, but man - either of those dudes would be awesome wearing the orange blazer

Fourth highest buyout in CBB.

Oats is very much set on a blue blood, Beard could've gone elsewhere this year but declined. End of the day, Brad ain't going anywhere with a 26M+ buyout.

absolutely not. i don't believe whitman would hire him, either.

i'm underwhelmed by brad's march track record, but i'll take him 100 times out of 100 over beard.

In general, the buyout and remaining contract are linked, so I would be shocked if it didn't affect the buyout.

I'm still trying to figure out why everyone's panties are so wet over this:

3 of the 5 years at Tech were 18 win seasons and didn't even make tournament, then went to Texas and won same amount of games everyone wanted to fire Brad over this year, then beat up his wife and got fired the next year, went to Ole Miss and barely won 20 games (missing the tournament yet again) and last year wasn't anything to write home about either.

Hard pass for me.

Just when I thought the Beard talk would stop.

For the record, I agree with you. The guy can coach, but I would not trade him over Brad (even if the baggage wasn't there).

The talk will be permanently over with a deep run in the tourney next year, and Brad has the guys to do it.

I don't think I've had a dream that unrealistic in decades. Maybe I should get some recommendations from Pru.

And my on my first desktop purchase I mega overbought a 320 Meg hard drive. I knew how ridiculous it was at the time since obviously no one could ever actually use up that much space!!

Well - Brad is here long term.

He is not Bill Self but he has taken us to NCAA 5 years in row, had a couple BTT championships and 1 BT season championship, a #1 seed and an elite 8 appearance.

He is certainly one of top 5 coaches in 18 team B10 and much much better than post Self recruit Weber and Groce.

He brought us back from the abyss just like Lou. I always wondered what could have been without Bruce Pearl/Deon Thomas NCAA action. We lost Cuanzo Martin and Juwon Howard over the probation not to mention crippling recruiting.

Lou is still my all time favorite. He had to coach against B10 legends Bobby Knight, Lute Olson, Jud Heathcote, Gene Keady. Players like Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Chris Weber, Joe Barry Caroll, and Scott May. The B10 was the dominant basketball conference during his time.
