His dad got arrested for trying to get a happy ending at a message parlor in the suburbs under the pseudonym "Patrick Ewing" the summer before his senior year in high school so they thought it best to leave the state for college.

While the massage thing was hilarious, and true, I don't think he was ever coming to Illinois. It felt like he was always going to end up in Philadelphia.

The crazy thing is Groce probably could have landed Jawun Evans if he didn't go off chasing Brunson. Had that happened, who knows how Groce would have faired, but also, I think there is no way Underwood ends up at Illinois, because he never could have had the year he had at Ok State without Evans.

I could be wrong but I believe the story at the time was that on the ride home from Brunson's official visit (side note: remember keeping track of how many of those were used up??) he told his dad he wanted to commit here, but dad talked him out of it/convinced him to take his visit to Villanova, and that was it.

Semi-related but I wondered this the other day: what was TSJ's reason for leaving Texas Tech?

If I remember correctly we were also recruiting Jawan Evans who played for Brad at OK St and, I think, were leading in that. The Brunson visit a few days prior to the long scheduled Evans visit may have also helped derail that recruitment. Once again Groce struck out trying to get a decent point guard. There was plenty of hand wringing on Loyalty about whether Brunson and Evans could play together, because, of course, we were going to get both, right?

I hope TSJ made a few bucks on those T shirts.

I still hope Coach B comes out with a Hoodie, sweats, shirts, or bumper stickers with him holding his arms out in place of the letter "T" incorporated into a phrase. I just got a huge laugh out of that in the Cirtus Bowl. Maybe they could make a few variations and a few bucks to donate for the NIL funds.

I mean would you rather commit to Villanova and play for Jay Wright or come here to play for Groce? Seems like a no brainer. He also only moved to Illinois in high school I think when his dad coached for the Bulls for a few years.

His girlfriend(I think now wife) did come down to Illinois though I don't know if she stayed and graduated(I had some friends that knew her).
