If they add Liggins, they are still going to take McHaney and another edge? That would be seven DL/edge preps pledges. I would be shocked if the staff doesn't add 2-3 transfers at these positions because of the pending losses to graduation. What would that be telling us?

(a) Lots of value in NIL era to take as many OL/DL guys as possible. I've been a big advocate for adding a 1-2 more guys at these positions in prep commits because they are so hard ($$) to acquire good linemen in the portal.

(b) A statement about the current roster in those units. All of these preps are not playable next year or will be limited to special teams & snaps in blowouts. It's going to create some imbalances if there are planned defections from underperforming players because of the sheer numbers.

I'm fighting myself here because I'm still in camp A (bring all of them in and see who sticks out). Just wanted to point out that it could mean that there's some disappointment in the current backups / younger players.

Anyone have insight on where things stand with the three higher-ranked and still-available tackles?

Staff visited with Micah Smith, so fair to assume the staff values him the highest or their chances the highest with him, but Marlen Bright and Kai Pritchard in NJ are still uncommitted and both already did their official visits to Illinois.

Staff feels like they lead for Smith …

McHaney is a beast and we don’t have a nose in this class. If he wants to commit you don’t turn him away. Also wouldn’t surprise me if Tony B eventually moves to oline like Teurk

you always want to upgrade. if pie is passing, take it. attrition is a fact of life

Sure, but this is ignoring the "cost". You can add lots of offensive/defensive linemen, but there is a maximum number of scholarships. That's the part that's so interesting to me. If the staff adds 7 defensive linemen (edges, interior DL), you have to take less elsewhere. You've already secured a couple LBers, so does that mean this class only has two total secondary recruits? Only one TE? Both of those would be interesting signals in recruiting (for example, maybe the staff is really high on the secondary two-deep this year or isn't getting the recruiting success they expected from their top DB targets).

It's an impossible thing to answer on the outside, but it's noteworthy that this could be the largest Illinois DL prep recruiting class of the 21st century.
