Marmol left Pallante in way too long trying to get him through the top of the 5th for the win and now a Cardinals 5 run lead is a 1 run deficit......

Can't be giving up big leads like that especially after the unlovables won earlier today.......poor managing if you ask me.......JMHO.......
He's not trying to get guys to qualify for wins. It's game 1 of a fairly long stretch of games with minimal days off. He's trying to not have to dip into his bullpen in the fifth. It's a balancing act.

The reality is that they should be focusing more on the Giants, Brewers and the Wild Card. The Cubs are going to coast home in that division.

Fighting for the second wild card spot-the New Cardinal Way. Hopefully, this new focus on youth and Mozeliak leaving will change that.

Very disappointing loss.....can't be giving up 5 run leads like that.........Pallante was gassed when he gave up that lead off home run but Oli has a habit of giving too much rope to starters in the fifth innings trying to get them wins........

Cardinals now 5 GB....................
I am trying to remember if LaRussa had a quick hook in this situation. I think it was a case by case basis. Like Second Place pointed out, how much rest does the BP need? I kinda feel this is one time it would have made sense to pull the starter. In his place you let the reliever go 3-4 innings.

I believe Larussa basically went case by case. There were times when a pitcher was getting shelled, and he would leave the pitcher in to save arms.

I have said this all along that the roster is not a championship caliber. The big question in my mind is with the reset and new regime is the goal going to be building a serious World Series contender. I guess that answer is to be determined.

The answer will be whether the DeWitts are finally bothered to look at attendance numbers and finally decide that not enough people are coming in to keep Ballpark Village going well. Considering Bill DeWitt III has made it clear through past comments (i.e. paraphrasing "If you don't come to games, then we won't play players") that he doesn't really care about winning.

DeWitt has to know the fan's frustrations with the team he fields. The attendance clearly shows it.

Looking at the post Covid numbers:
2022 they had an average "paid attendance" of 40,994. That's #2 behind the Dodgers.
2023 40,013 #4.
2024 they dropped below 40,000 for the first time in more than a decade. (Covid exempted.) 35,872 # 7.
2025 so far it's only 29,344 #13. Granted this doesn't have the summer vacation bump.

In the pre Covid years they were averaging between 41 and 43,000 from 2013 to 2019.

The problem is that with MLB's revenue share the only way you lose money is if you spend for a contender and miss the playoffs. The Pirates make a profit every year even though they don't sell tickets. If people stop coming DeWitt will just slash payroll even more and still make his profit.

I know but St Louis has pride or at least they used to. They are not Pittsburgh, Tampa, Oakland, I mean Vegas or any of the other small market franchises. If they start getting 8000 fans in the stands the DeWitts would be eaten alive by the media and the public at large.

As one of the previous posters pointed out though, you don't want to burn through your bullpen arms early in this stretch they started last night. Starting last night and with their next off day on June 16, they have the Royals, Dodgers, and Blue Jays for 3 games each and then have 4 at Milwaukee. After that off day on June 16, they don't have another off day until July 3.

The biggest thing that was ridiculous last night was people arguing for Matz instead of Pallante to face Witt. Neither one of them have been pitching great lately and i think Matz's ERA has jumped by nearly a full run here recently.

THAT'S A WINNER !!!!!!!!

Another nitty gritty dirt band win for the Cardinals by the score of 6-5 in 10 innings.............

Mikolas with another quality start..................
Herrera with a monster HR in bottom of 8th to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead.................
Helsley with another save opportunity drama inning blowing the save.......
KC takes the lead 5-4 in top of 10th but the never say die Cardinals come up with 2 runs in the bottom of the 10th with a Contreras single driving in the walkoff run..............

GREAT WIN CARDINALS....Let's go for the sweep of the doubleheader later on............

THAT'S A WINNER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cardinals start a 3 game series with the LA Dodgers off on a " sonny " performance and win by a 5-0 score............

Sonny Gray with a dominant 6 1/3 innings baffling the Dodgers with an array of sweepers , sliders and pinpoint control........
Phil Maton with ice in his veins and a superb breaking ball relieved Jo Jo Romero out of a 2nd and 3rd nobody out situation with a highly impressive outing...............
Pages got it going with a 2 run big fly tater.............
Arenado with a 3 hit night...........
Contreras with a solo blast to continue his hitting streak to 8 games...........
Matz with a NO DRAMA 9th to close out the shutout....................

Next up tomorrow is a 12:30 matinee with Fedde vs. Yamamoto...............

Also we picked up a game on the unlovables with the victory tonight............

LET'S GO CARDINALS.......................
