Last 20 years -
-14 from SEC (counting Texas
-4 champs from B10 (counting USC)
-3 from ACC
But why the arbitrary 20 year time frame?

All-Time Big Ten has the most championships.

What's that you say, those historic championships aren't relevant to the current landscape? We'll sure, but neither is anything since before NIL. And since NIL SEC and Big Ten are tied with two each, with the Big Ten winning the last two. And the Big Ten is the ONLY conference to win a National Championship since the playoff expanded beyond 4 teams.

20 year window is completely arbitrary. I agree if we go with 4 year window B10 looks much better vs SEC. JMO but given how Illinois has been spanked by SEC teams everytime we meet (South Carolina game being the first win) my general impression is that from top to bottom SEC has historically been stronger. I mean we are celebrating beating South Carolina who has never won the SEC.

I think our top 4 - OSU Oregon Michigan and PSU match up well over past 4 years. I think our bottom 8 would be slaughtered by SEC bottom 8.

How have the two fared in bowl contests in the NIL era?

Of course those don’t involve the bottom eight, but only the mid-to-upper tiers are relevant in the discussion that sparked this comparison —- potential CFP dominance by one conference or the other. Based on bowl performance in the NIL era, has the SEC dominated B1G in bowl games in the last four years? I’m too lazy to dig out the numbers btw.

A couple factors to consider:
- has there been a relative home field advantage in bowl games
- has/will NIL encourage more southern bred athletes to play up north

If there’s a home field advantage in bowl games, doesn’t it favor the SEC regionally speaking, since bowls aren’t played in the frozen North? However, neutral fields should mitigate much of any regional effect. The Illini were well represented among fans at the Citrus Bowl, right?

It’s pretty clear NIL and other factors have nationalized recruiting and portal moves, as you’ve observed. Our QB is one example of many.

The SEC luster isn’t showing in bowl games or (earned) CFP participation in the NIL era, so I don’t see much risk of them dominating B1G in terms of CFP slots. Our top half compares quite favorably with the SEC’s top half and the bottom halves don’t impact CFP. We have nothing to fear.

old days usc hosting rose bowl, miami hosting orange bowl YES. Today cfp no.
NIL eliminating power of SEC paper bags filled with cash

Does that rank below or above Tim Beckman’s OSKEE diatribe on the Cringe-O-Meter?
Wow, thanks for sharing this train wreck. I would assume this was in response to a question about recruiting and maybe he was trying to say that other programs (presumably not his own) are trying to convince the recruits or current players (the "midgets" in the analogy) into thinking they are part of the team, but the other programs are just using the players in the same way the stock brokers are just using the "midgets."

Given that Beckman represented my university and to some extent my state and hometown I internally found him as more cringe than this, but without this bias maybe I would have voted for the lack of social awareness on display here. Being true to my actual feelings this is below Beckman for me.

This is 100% what it was. And uh, I think there were approximately 7,000 better ways to make this point. I think anytime you start talking about midgets in a press conference you need to ask yourself...."is this really the best way to say what I want to say?" But I also love Wolf of Wallstreet, and can't imagine Beckman watching anything other than Saturday morning cartoons and 80's/90's action flicks, so there's that.

The only thing that could have made this better is if he said the "gooble gobble" part.

I really tried to like Beckman. Seriously . Gave him more time than most fans. My bad

But he was not only a goof, he was a lousy football coach AND he was a danger to the players . He was about as bad a coach for a B1G program as you could get

That he is basically out of the game tells you all you need to know

thanks Mike Thomas

Arandas rant has me scratching my head tho . It’s like he was talking 10 seconds ahead of his brain was thinking

Both Beckman and Groce tried to use those stupid mnemonic devices (OKSEE, TnT), which is almost always the sign that you’re serving under a poor leader. On top of that, Beckman reportedly had the football officer littered with those posters with inspirational sayings — another sign that your leader may not be the intellectual genius he or she is trying to come off as.

Not to derail the convo, but Iowa State University is facing a budget challenge ($147m deficit). While it’s good to be in the B10, I am not seeing the current model as sustainable.
