Cubs get Michael Soroka per MLB Trade Rumors. Doesn’t say who they gave up,
According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, the Cubs are sending prospects Christian Franklin and Ronny Cruz to the Nationals in the deal. Those are the 13th and 14th ranked prospects. I’d say this is an underwhelming trade.

Rony Cruz & Christian Franklin. (#13 & 14 prospects, respectively)
Cruz is an 18 y/o infield project. Franklin is a 25 y/o AAA outfielder, who likely needed to go somewhere else if he was ever going to make the majors.

Kind of a roll of the dice. Soroka was once an ace type prospect. 2 Achilles injuries later he's working his way back to form.
Hoping this is strictly a depth move & gives Jed a little more leverage. Perhaps get the stench of desperation off him in other negotiations. While Soroka can help, If this is all they get done, it’s very underwhelming.

Looks like they got a guy who can give them 5 decent innings until the 2 starters get back from their injuries.

Not a bad pick up as long as Soroka isn’t the number 1 SP pick up. His underlying metrics are much better than the surface ones. He has also been pitching for a bad team that is pretty terrible defensively. Also gives some flexibility to staff as he can start or relieve.

Above Emerson gave a good summary of the prospects Cubs gave up. Overall, might have been a bit of an overpay, but organizationally the trade didn’t do too much damage to farm system and leaves the Cubs with plenty of bullets to make a bigger move. Hopefully that will happen.

It was a seller's market and it sounded like all major deals had Shaw as the primary target. That was definitely the case with McKenzie Gore. The Cubs said thanks, but no thanks and they're 100% right in making him untouchable.

Suarez is in Seattle now, so I think it'll be a series of smaller moves. If they can get an arm or two in the pen and some positional depth..... they'll be done.

kitteridge is underwhelming also. there are still arms to be had and that is what the cubs need. Mitch Keller, Griffin Jax would be my choices.

I don’t think Cubs are willing to pay the price for either of those guys. First two deals certainly give the impression they are more comfortable nibbling around the fringes. At this point, I think Houser or Kelly and Coulombe are more likely. Still wouldn’t mind Coulombe and Willi Castro deal that I talked about a few days ago.

I'm oddly content with Soroka/Kitteredge based on what others around the league are giving up.

The Padres "win" the deadline every year and somehow always come up short in the postseason. Trading for Miller is interesting given they already have one of the best bullpens in the league (I know, I know, "control", etc. etc.)

Watching the Mets, Phillies, and Padres get appreciably better today. When Jed got his extension first, I figured it would be a dissappointing deadline, but this is depressing. If the Brewers swoop in at the 11th hour and make a big addition, we are in trouble, even for the wild card.

The Cubs have needed a starter since April, and crickets. I'm sorry , but adding a #5 innings eater does not square with trading what they did for Tucker. But he is doing what Ricketts wants, so good for him, I guess.

One hour left. Let’s see what Hoyer does.
I think that he's going to stand pat. There might be a move to get a utility guy and maybe another reliable(not dominant) arm and that'll be about it.

No big splashes and it made really no sense to throw caution to the wind. They have to assume Tucker is gone next year and Happ is gone in two. I don't see how you can up your top prospect(which happens to be an outfielder)

As I was typing this, looks like they traded for Willie Castro. Very solid utility guy. It's an upgrade over Brujan and Berti, that's for sure. This is the type of move I expected.

Now I know that I'm on Loyalty! When I see a fan worrying about, in essence, the Reds..... we've met expectations.

This is a seller's market right now and there are teams that are simply not going to give up controllable starting pitching for anything less than everything. Pittsburgh pulled Keller off the table. The Marlins aren't that bad and are clearly improving. Why give up two quality starters? Heck, the Sox haven't dealt Houser because they're asking for the world.

Every team needs pitching. Only the dumb ones mortgage the current roster(teams want Shaw) AND their top prospects. That's the ask right now and I don't blame Hoyer for one second for putting up the middle finger.

I don't hate the moves today, but still need a starter. somebody that slots in the 3rd roll. I wanted a bigger bullpen arm then kitteridge, but he is a more reliable presley at this point and fits hoyer's style. I think this Gore deal happens.

So the new goal appears to be to stay ahead of the Reds for the last wildcard spot. Then Imanaga, Boyd, and ... Taillon? Bullpen day? ... in the playoffs. Either a) Cassie, Alcantara, Long, Ballesteros, Triantos are all so good they will be in the bigs next year so Jed wouldn't trade them or b) so over rated that no one wanted them, or c) Jed just sucks at his job.

The Cubs are a good team this year, but the holes are so obvious, yet nothing. I am severely bummed.
