1. There are norms. There are patterns. There are traditions. BUT, there is not, and never will there be, a set of uniform rules.
2. Wearing white pants is not an SEC thing ... Here’s a couple of 70’s Illini rocking white pants.
3. Orange outs are *fun.* would I ever be a fan of doing one on the road? No. But orange is our color man. Nobody in the B1G dons orange but us. To skip out on an opportunity to douse the whole stadium in orange under the lights, with a sea of orange all around loudly exploding whenever we do anything good (so many memories from that Kansas game last year)…skipping out on that because it “looks bad” (even if true which I disagree with) is missing the bigger point.
4. (a) no, you don’t “have to have the same stripe pattern everywhere." ... (b) look at Illini twitter and you’ll see more than half of them elect to wear white pants with some combo in their official visit. They love them... (c) there are no guaranteed ways to get a universally-loved uniform... (d) - no, we don’t look like Syracuse...
I first want to say bravo, and I both agree with almost everything you have written and applaud your enthusiasm for this topic! On that note, everything I am about to say is (A) just my subjective opinion and (B) meant as casual conversation points rather than specific responses to any specific post! However, I like your topics you used, so I'm using those numbers as conversational springboards.
1. I definitely agree overall, but I think a program can develop something approaching "norms" within its own tradition/culture. I think our 2023 rebrand was a pivotal tipping of the balance in favor of that 1989-2005 look, specifically the orange pants with a
B/W/B striping pattern. If we had gone in a totally different direction, those 1989-2005 uniforms might have just been a footnote in our history. I would argue that by the new uniforms providing a clear callback to those - in addition to us experiencing recent success, which supports your later point! - we have taken an important step toward defining that as our program's "look." It is obviously nowhere near as entrenched as something like Michigan, PSU, Notre Dame, etc., but it definitely tipped the scales in favor of this general look being "synonymous with Illini Football," and I think that's a good thing.
2. I definitely agree, and I will also say that our current white pants look REALLY slick, specifically because of how well the
B/O/B striping pattern pops against the white background. MY main issue is that I just absolutely hate them with the white road jerseys. I'm a big believer that if you are going for that Storm Trooper look, you have to go all the way ... you need the white helmet. My least favorite look in college football is when a team has white jerseys, white pants but a NON-white helmet. It just looks "stuck" in between looks, as the non-white helmet ruins the "all-white" look, and the white jersey and pants look abnormally plain/lacking if it is not part of an all-white uniform set. There are a lot of storied programs that rock this look (e.g., Alabama and Oklahoma), but this doesn't change my mind. Our current
O/W/W uniform combo looks ever-so-slightly better due to the aforementioned
B/O/B striping pattern providing some much needed orange and blue...
... but I hated when we opted for this look with our Lovie Era uniforms, as it just looked so plain and incomplete due to how terribly minimalist those uniforms were.
3. I completely agree it would be bizarre and foolish for us to not ever wear orange. Do I like wearing my orange Illini gear when I am not at a game? No, lol. Do I always rock navy or white if I am just trying to rep the Illini while out and about? Definitely, as I like those colors a lot better. However, as you pointed out, it is not a fashion contest come game time. An all-orange stadium looks unique, intimidating and radiant, and we absolutely should go back to our mid- to late 2000s consistency of our crowds being almost monolithically orange. For the actual Orange Out game, we definitely need to rock orange, and I will admit that the current all-orange look is light years better than all previous iterations, once again due to the striping patterns providing enough navy and white. With that said, and somewhat related to point #2, I DO still want to see the white pants worn with the orange jerseys. I just think it would look a lot slicker, and it would be an excuse to utilize our pretty slick-looking white pants.
4. (A) As I have said in previous posts, I could not agree more on NOT needing to match the striping patterns, and I really hope no one who picks the uniforms ever thinks about this. If THIS is why we haven't gotten #BPOTR yet, it's a travesty, lol.
4. (B) Definitely agree that recruits seem to like the white pants, and these photos are actually where I have seen some of the white pants with the orange jerseys that I really want to see utilized!
4. (C) I definitely agree here. Sorry, but Penn State's away uniforms aren't cool and don't look good, lol ... know why they're highly thought of?? Because PSU has a storied history and has kept that look during that success. Same with Alabama, USC (their uniforms are especially MEH if they didn't have history!), Tennessee, etc. There are truly storied programs that I do think have unique/cool uniform designs outside of the tradition associated with them like Ohio State, Florida, Auburn, etc., but your point stands.
4. (D) I could not agree more, and I always found it to be a weird insecurity complex for our OWN fans to compare us to Syracuse. Do you think SU fans say, "What the heck, we look like Illinois!" No, because they're homers (as they SHOULD be as fans!) who consider themselves to be the rightful "owners" of an orange and blue look, so why would they assume any uniform pattern they utilize looks like another school just because they share colors?
My Summarizing Thoughts
I think there are a lot of different ways you can "win" with your uniforms, and it will depend on the situation. These are my GENERAL thoughts for Illinois, as of August 2025, lol...
1. I do think we've hitched our wagon to the 1989-2005 uniform design in an effort to establish a long-term "look" for Illini Football, so I am sympathetic to honoring the patterns during that era. While we won't achieve the rigidity of Penn State/Alabama, we can start to slide into the Iowa/Wisconsin type of consistent look. For me, this would involve VERY consistently rocking
O/B/O at home, with rare exceptions ... examples being orange for an "Orange Out" and
O/B/B for a big home game under the lights.
2. I do think we should promote that we have two true primary colors. EIGHT Big Ten teams all genuinely only have one "real" color to use. Of the schools with two "real" colors, four utilize accent colors like black or gold. Only Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon and USC boast two bold colors ... so we are one of only three teams in the original Big Ten, and I would argue further that our specific combo is the "boldest." We should promote that to foster a unique look, and that is why I love our
O/B/O and
O/W/B combos, as they both really highlight the orange and navy.
3. This might seem to contradict point #2, but it's also okay to deviate. Michigan has started wearing navy pants on occasion, and it looks great and doesn't cheapen their "consistent look" in any real way. As long as we MOSTLY maintain consistency, it's okay to mix it up on occasion. If we bust out a white Script helmet only for the Mizzou game, that is cool ... wearing it randomly and often starts to cheapen the consistency goal, but having a specific purpose doesn't.
4. I don't think "winning cures all" is 110% true with uniforms, but it is indeed mostly true. If we had the Lovie Era uniforms in the 1980s and wore them through decades of success, fans would get out the pitchforks if you suggested changing them. Since they were new and worn during crap years, it is easier to point out that they're not good uniforms, lol. I feel we have a homerun set on our hands, and if we keep wearing them through continued success, I think they will attain an "iconic" status AT LEAST on par with Iowa's current look they adopted during the Hayden Frye years.
