There’s multiple trees in that picture
Lol, yes, my friend … there are a handful of trees in Grange Grid. Are there as many as one would expect for an area designated as a “grove” or as many as would create a more unique atmosphere with more character than a flat square of grass? I think the answer to both is clearly no.

Plant more trees and make it a true grove. The arguments against doing so are breathtakingly lame and short sighted.

Speaking of Grange Grove, has anyone done the self-tailgate ($50) option and what did you think? I'm considering it for Western Michigan, but IIUC, the only way to make your own food is to bring a silent generator and electric grill, which is a lot to lug from your car anyway (even if there is an unloading zone). No open flames allowed. There are food trucks around, but it sounds a bit...I don't know...Tailgate-Lite?
I’ve wondered the same. I’d pay $50 for a spot but without the grill it doesn’t really seem like tailgating. If I’m going to eat from a food truck I can just eat in a shady spot on the grass and save the 50 bucks. I’m not sure what the big concern is, it’s not like we’re going to burn down the trees! 😆

Correcting myself. I spoke to the rep - when they say "no open flame" in the literature they mean "no open fires". So, charcoal/gas grills are allowed. Sounds a lot better now. Though you still have to lug your stuff out of there before gametime or within an hour of game end, so better park close by if you're going to do it :)

Yes, this does sound better.

Now, can you return to Grange Grove during the game? Say at halftime if I wanted to head back to my tailgate area and then return to the stadium or maybe start packing stuff up at halftime?

You cannot leave game to go to Grange Grove and get back into the game. Unless you have a 2nd ticket.

I would look to buy a parking pass in one of the lots and tailgate there.

Plant more trees and make it a true grove.

I stopped by Grange Grove yesterday to visualize my tailgating setup (no, I'm not over-excited, why do you ask?) and was surprised by how many trees I saw - more than I remember. Maybe it's because they're mostly still in the short to mid-size range and the tents typically block the view on gamedays. I should've counted them. However, the News-Gazette ran a Mailbag question the other day which included a link to the Campus Tree Inventory. The map shows...are you ready for this?....55 trees in Grange Grove! Will count them next time I go by to see if that matches up with reality.

it’s gonna take WAY WAY more than a tiny portion .

more like all of it to do it right . this is Illinois .
union jobs aren’t cheap . no joke

Gies’ donation gets the ball rolling & allows JW to start banging the drum for 5 million here , 2 million there , and so forth .

it’s no longer a pipe dream . it’s reality and something we can all look forward to for the next x years

LET'S GO! While I think absolutely everyone would love this or an updated take on this general design...

It really needs to be re-emphasized that ANYTHING is better than what we currently have! If we determine that too much of our newly found funds have to go toward NIL and we need to cut down on the "grandness" of the SEZ renovation, even a scaled down version of what LSU did (literally just threw suites on top of what was already there) would be such a huge improvement. Memorial Stadium is so beautiful, and we cannot let the incomplete and unfortunate look of the Horseshoe be an unnecessary eye sore on it any longer!

Also, I did an MS Paint mockup of this somewhat scaled down version a while back in a previous thread...

In other words, I definitely want something grander than that, and ideally it would honor the amazing architecture at our stadium. However, the worst case scenario is that we determine we need more for NIL and let the status quo stand ... even if it's at a reduced price, bringing the SEZ stands down to field level and adding height to trap noise behind them needs to be the bare minimum and needs to be a priority!!

So happy by today's news.

LSU mock is outstanding, other than at the field it needs to be elevated. Blends in a little of what Iowa did as well and their endzone is excellent.

I've also wished for a "semi" luxury seating area. Not quite colonnades level but at least a seat and an area to get out of the cold for a bit (for my wife).

Not that $100M is anything to sneeze at, but I think this will make some amazing updates to Gies Memorial Stadium, and get the horseshoe moving - but it won’t be the massive update we’d all love without some more major donations.

But imagine some ground level seating, some great concessions areas behind the horseshoe and other amenities and some added seating and new video board all built to be expanded on to get to that beautiful vision.

But also, I pray someday we fix those tarped sideline seats - even removing them for shrubs would be better that the tarps.

to do anything like what LSU did , my guess we need 300-350 million for the east side and horseshoe

There was a press release a while back about a bunch of concessions updates, including the horseshoe.

Gies' donation jump starts the next phase. Really looking forward to seeing the proposed plans. Hoping this will spur a wave of smaller, yet significant, pledges.

a new/heavily renovated SEZ will dramatically improve the stadium (and revenue). wonder what the new capacity will be?

Like with any investment, you need to hook one whale to make the others more comfortable with giving their own cash. I agree with the others who say that this will reel in other big donors who won't want to be left behind
