Well if you were around in 1969, it is not hard to understand why Cub fans can be pessimistic. That said, if you’ve been a Cubs fan for that long, you’ve also lived through some pretty poor and outright bad seasons. So I choose to enjoy the seasons when the Cubs are competitive and playoff bound. I don’t expect the Cubs to win the World Series, but that’s not going to stop me from staying mostly positive and rooting/dreaming for that outcome. Much rather have a chance and be disappointed than be buried in mediocrity as so many Cubs teams have been.

I was around in 1969 and witnessed it firsthand, suffering through it. Maybe that is why I cannot be so optimistic. It set the tone for my fandom of a team considered to be the lovable losers.
Genuinely a healthy philosophy for most aspects of life, I'd say.
I have faint recollections of 1968, but 1969 was my first year rooting for and keeping up with the Cubs daily. Remember it much too well. But time and an eventual WS win have pretty much drained the pool of pessimism. It still dampens the earth of my psyche, but I manage to keep it under control in seasons like this. Just enjoying the wins and seeing the humor in some posts on here after the losses

It does make sense, we wanted Cubbies to win all 5, or least 4 of the games in this series. Picking up 1 game is all they got. Afraid just not enough to catch brewers and win the division.

Within 5 and Milw has AZ and Tor this week, while Cubs have SF and Rockies. I like us to pick up at least a game in the race.
4 games back entering the final month seems certainly doable and would give hope. We have the tiebreaker so there is that also. Great stretch of baseball for the team just in the nick of time.
I said that I had them on standby until they won 2 consecutive games. I was afraid that it would be next season, but I am happy that it isn't. Plus there isn't much of a precipice in the neighborhood. Probably just sprain an ankle.
Finally getting a day off after 15 games in 14 days. 9-5 was an outstanding run considering 8 of those games were against the leaders of each league. Tailion and Assad as the calvary coming to help I have to admit didn't absolutely inspire confidence but they have been great during this stretch and 4 solid starts with a 1.74 era was massive to get through this. TBD on Tuesday, should be Rae's spot, I am wondering if it is finally time for him to switch roles but he has been so solid as a 5th starter for us I think it would be a tad unfair. 2.53 era in August and you lose your rotation spot? not sure what they are planning to do. Taillon did have a little groin tightness so...may work itself out naturally here. Praying Tucker has entered a red hot streak and he just makes up for lost time in a big way.

I'm pushing a bit harder here. 2 out of 3 versus San Fran would be a solid series. I want all 3 versus Colorado. No reason that shouldn't be the case, though the Rockies are playing better. If we have any chance to catch Milwaukee, that's the type of run that's needed, plus getting some help. When you start doing the math, it's daunting. With 32 games left, if the Brew go 16-16, the Cubs have to go 21-11 to ties(win the tiebreaker): We be a 30+ over .500 at that point. That's why 5 out of 6 would be so important.
I keep going back to that 5th game against Milwaukee when Counsell brought his "day off" lineup card to the ballpark. Still trying to figure out how Happ and Suzuki are immune from benching, but everyone else in the lineup in fair game?

I simply have watched too much baseball to act like sweeping a team on the road is a must, those are golden. I also, do not really think the cubs are gonna catch the brewers after the insane run they made, that is the type of baseball that wins you a division, so I am just about winning baseball at this point. That is what matters most here. But could you imagine winning 8 of 9 on the road at this point in the season? I will take 7-2 on this stretch and run with that. You must have a higher opinion than I do of this team to push for those type of results. Could happen though. I'd love to see it.

That’s where I’m at — go 4-2 this week, Brewers go 3-4 and September gets very interesting. Obviously a sweep of Rockies would be better, but Cubs are actually 2-4 at Coors the last two years. You have a Cubs SP blow up and one has to be careful not to overuse bullpen.
Haven’t looked recently, but if I remember correctly Brewers have a tougher schedule the rest of the way. I do remember that Cubs are at home for all of last week of season, while Brewers are split between home and away. Could be fun folks.
I always go with the theory that if you are within 5 games of the division lead on September 1 and don't have to jump over anyone you have a chance. They can't lose any ground before then. Keep in mind that the tie breaker belongs to us.
I don't know how it got past me but I didn't realize that in the Wildcard round all 3 games are in the park of the higher seed. To stay in front of the NL West runner up is HUGE. We are presently 2 games ahead of the Dodgers and Padres.
