Pete Yanity from South Carolina still has us unranked:

Pete should have his ballot revoked:

He's got:

- Michigan at 11
- Oklahoma (who just beat Michigan) at 18
- Alabama at 12
- Arizona St at 16
- James Madison (who lost to Lousville) at 23
- Liberty (who just lost to Jacksonville St) at 24

I got to campus in the fall of 2003, so this is the highest we've been ranked since I've had a vested interest in the Illini. Wild and heady stuff. I'm not taking any part of this season for granted because goodness knows what it took for us to get here.

Notre Dame plays 1 ranked team the rest of the season and it’s TX A&M next week at home! Big Aggies fan this weekend, otherwise the Irish will stay ahead of us mysteriously all season unless we upset OSU.
if we take care of biz versus USC &O$U, we will leapfrog ND . If we lose to either or both, not so much

Whether they're ranked there or not, USC is a top 25 team.
They'll be Top 25 very soon. I don't see any way they lose to @Purdue or vMSU. Very soft start to their schedule. They'll be 4-0 and likely ranked Top 20ish heading into our game. The wild thing about our schedule is we very easily could be playing:

3-0 Indiana (proj. Top 20 rank at kickoff)
4-0 USC (proj. Top 20 rank at kickoff)
Purdue
5-0 OSU (proj. #1 rank at kickoff)

In that 4 game stretch. So if you want to make a statement we do have that opportunity. We manage to actually go 6-0 headed into OSU, I kid you not that might be a Top 5 v #1 matchup. But to get there you gotta play each of these games like a playoff game, including Purdue, who by the way scares the absolute hell out of me in that stretch. That is about as trappy a trap game as you can imagine against a team that we just seem to struggle with. Tough schedule, but we have a chance to do something really really special.

It's been a long long climb from the doldrums of getting hammered by scores of 63-0 and other humiliating results and I dig it !!

I really really really really do..........To see the ascension from the depths of despair to a ranking in the AP Top Ten at # 9 brings a misty eyed thank you to JW , BB and staff and players and everyone else who has contributed to this level of success........I never thought years ago that I would live long enough to see the Illini regain the respect that we now have ............

This season means a lot to me as I know it does to all the other Illini fanatics worldwide but in my little world I see myself as a youngster again playing pickup games and thinking I was an Illini star............memories are a special commodity when success is enjoined in them..........My smile at this # 9 ranking is a mile wide............it really really is...................

SP+ is updated for FBS for week 3:

Notes:
- Illinois up from 21 to 17
- Bama up to 3, for which even Connelly looked and replied

- Indiana up 21 spots to 16
- Connelly said a lot of the FCS results really caused some movement, but it's still early in the season and numbers haven't stabilized yet (and would be even worse without preseason projection factor)

Connelly also ran resume-only SP+ (meaning no preseason factor): https://www.espn.com/college-footba...llege-football-sp+-rankings-all-136-fbs-teams

Top 25 SP+ resume only:
1. Oregon
2. TCU
3. Florida State
4. Tennessee
5. Oklahoma
6. Washington
7. Illinois
8. Utah
9. Missouri
10. USC
11. Arizona
12. Arkansas
13. Ohio State
14. South Florida
15. Pitt
16. Iowa State
17. Texas Tech
18. Louisville
19. Ole Miss
20. Penn State
21. Vandy
22. Georgia Tech
23. BYU
24. Indiana
25. Miami

Other notables:

35. LSU
37. Texas
46. Alabama

69. Clemson

One other thing I noticed looking at SP+, the P4 conferences are dominating the FBS landscape more than usual. There are 68 total P4 teams, and right now they are 39 of the top 40 teams and 62 of the top 70. Only P4 teams outside the top 70 right now are UCLA, Northwestern, Purdue, Oklahoma State, Stanford, and Virginia Tech.

Corollary: The top FCS team (North Dakota State) is basically even right now with the top G6 team (Memphis). FCS for CFP!

It is extremely weird having a this type of conversation about Illini FB when it has pretty much only ever happened in a Basketball context.
