We might be witnessing a choke of epic proportions.
My apologies to @Jimbo. There. I said it.
Longest losing streak all year was 3 games. Last week of the season and were at 5 and counting.
And Brewers sticking it to us also. Padres winning 6-0.
Magic Number has been 4 for a month and a half now.
Being a Chicago and Illini sports fan isn't easy.
I so want to be wrong. After we clinched we lost our edge.

Does anyone really think the Cubs are going to do anything in the playoffs? No hitting. No pitching. Totally out of gas.
Until a few days ago, I felt they could handle the Padres in a best of three, especially at home. That had as much to do with how the Padres were playing as what the Cubs were doing. Other than that, I didn’t think they had much of a chance against the Brewers or Phillies in a best of seven. Just shocking how the offense has fallen off so drastically.

We stinks! That's the quote, right?

Anyone ever gone into the playoffs riding a 10 game losing streak?

I was hoping that we would skip Boyd’s start today but let’s see if these extra days of rest will help. If Milwaukee can win and we can reverse course, I would feel better about the last 4 games. Shota going tomorrow. We need to win these next two games or we might as well rest everyone and get ready for SD in California.

The Cardinals in 2006 were 12-17 in Sept/Oct at end of season. Including a late September 7 game skid. Seriously dying on the vine. Then in true Cardinal voodoo magic fashion they got hot, other teams had injuries & Detroit forgot how to throw the ball to first base in the World Series. And the Cardinals won it all with an 83 win season. A rarety tho. Usually a team that is dying at the end of the year just continues to die in the playoffs for a short stay.

It could be worse...we could be Detroit.

Plus being the Cardinals, a whole lot of cheating was going on. They aren't nearly as good with the people tracking every wrong Ball Strike call, and challenges for other calls.

Another addition to the "could be worse, Cubs edition"... I just visited the Cardinals thread.
We are talking about how we might not have the horses to make a title run in the playoffs.
They are talking about "next year", and trading away anyone with any value for a bunch of AA players.

I grew up in central Illinois, surrounded by redbird fans. (Even my Dad and my brother...) They were almost always good, we were almost always bad, and I never heard the end of it. I revel in the years where the opposite is true.

Been avoiding this thread cuz I didn’t want to read all the sky is falling posts. No doubt a tough stretch, so I knew the pessimistic and frankly some times whiny posts would be popping up. Recently someone on here asked if anyone really thought the Cubs would do something in playoffs. Guess it depends on what is meant by “something in playoffs.” But, sure, why not? Best record in majors right now is owned by Milwaukee. Anyone think they are a lock to win the World Series?

I think Cubs can certainly win first series and there aren’t many teams that really scare me. Do I expect Cubs to win WS? No. But then again I’ve never “expected” that out of any Cubs team during the last week of season. Sure they’ll have to get hot in playoffs, but pretty sure that is the case with every team. Can’t say I remember any team winning the WS with a cold streak in playoffs. Playoff baseball can get crazy and doesn’t always go as expected, so Cubs could certainly make a deep run. I mean 3 of last 8 participants in WS ended season under .500 in last 10 games of regular season.

Go Cubs!

Not even in 2016 and 2017? I sure did.

Remembering Robert Redford and "The Natural" locker room pep talk scene from which Roy Hobbs walks out - funny.

"Losing is a disease as contagious as polio ... as syphillis ... as bubonic plague ... attacking one but infecting all. Ah, but curable."

Hope so. Nothing but Ws.

Go Cubs!

Why did Counsell take Imanaga out so early? He only gave up 8 earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.
At 6-1, if you're a manager, you have a choice. 1)Go to the pen early, probably burn it out when you have three games in a row coming up....in the hopes of an extremely unlikely comeback or 2)In Shota's last start of the year, let him take it as far as he safely can and eat up some innings.

It was the right choice IMO. Guessing the pen is going to be used quite a bit this weekend with potentially a bullpen game involved.
