What did TV have to say about the SC scoring play that was snapped after the play clock hit zero? Seemed obvious in person, and Bret was livid

Same here. Mackovic is the bar for me. He was on the verge of something really great and sustained when he bolted for Texas. I’ve always wondered if he didn’t regret it after Texas canned him. His 7 to 9 wins a year with an occasional 10 woulda kept him in Champaign for a long long time. I suspect Bret is here for a longer duration and will far surpass both of those guys. The best coach of my fandom which stretches back to the great Mike White.
Should be held in a similar regard as Ayo is for Basketball imo. Of course the Chicago link for Ayo adds to his legacy but both have totally redefined the revenue sports at Illinois when factoring what they could control.Every time …
Kid stayed loyal … Didn’t have to …
Resurrected our program … Not by himself obviously but we all know he’s been critical …
Legend …
I was at the ‘86 USC game in the Coliseum, my first Illini game. And then at the ‘96 game at home and the ‘08 Rose Bowl. Yesterday’s game got ride of some demons. Great homecoming victory against SC.I’ll take last week’s debacle if it meant beating SC.
Born and raised in Southern California as an illini fan with my second favorite team being whoever usc was playing that day… never liked sc. my dad played for the illini against them in the 70s, my parents went to the ‘89 game and almost got in a fight with some SC fans… “sore losers” I guess (i wasn’t there), and I got trash talked at school after the ‘96 game lol. This was one of the most satisfying Illini wins ever, at least for me.
We’re in the middle of a pretty good stretch of illini football, let’s enjoy it (I still have no idea what to make of that Indiana game, so I’ll just try to ignore that one)
This has been the case for years and years. The way it's been explained in the past is that the ref is looking at the play clock, and when it hits 00, they look to see if the ball has been snapped. That time between play clock and ball snapped is the "beat". I feel that yesterday's was a little longer than I've seen before, but, you know... I might be biased.Said the refs tend to give “a beat” when the clock hits zero before throwing the flag.
I’ve never known this to be the case, but whatta I know?![]()
This included Mike Pereira...he confirmed the extra "beat", so he said he would not have flagged it...would have let it go like the refs did. I've actually heard that before. I think that slow substitution deal that the defense was doing plays into it, as well. That was also something that Pereira commented on...that something needs to be done about players jogging off the field in that situation. He understands the defense needs to substitute, but I think he feels they shouldn't lolly-gag off the field.Said the refs tend to give “a beat” when the clock hits zero before throwing the flag.

Yeah double edged sword. I felt they were going extra slow today likely because of the heat and trying to keep guys rested, but there were a couple plays where guys on D were still looking over to the sidelines when the ball was snappedThis has been the case for years and years. But, I do want to add: while I love Bielema's substitution shenanigans, I'm not sure this defense is the right defense to be using it with. They seem to get discombobulated when we do the late subs, and it ends up hurting us.

The most subjective, capricious, and abused call in college sports.
Yeh, well, in the one on the right, after impact the tackler's head rises up, showing that that's where his force was focussed. In the one on the left, it's the tackler's shoulder that rises up after impact, showing that that's where his force was focussed. So, the one on the left is not targeting, because you're generally allowed to lead with your head, but the one on the right IS targeting, because the tackler's helmet was an Illini helmet, and it's targeting if one of those touches an opponent's helmet.
We could have a whole hourlong video compilation of this if we also include roughing the passer calls where it's just Illinois being called for ludicrous ticky tack stuff next to egregious no calls
I agree with ball security but that was also Valentine's first career fumble and Feagin theoretically "fumbled" earlier. I think sometimes we overthink these things. Valentine has been very very good for us thus far and deserves touches. He made a great cut, hit the hole, and put on the afterburner. He'll learn from this and cover up the ball with the other hand. But so far this season almost every time we've put the ball in his hand good things have happened. This was the one exception. We need to keep giving him the rock.Really, really good win, and not to dwell upon it, but truth be told that Valentine fumble simply cannot happen. Punch may have been perfectly placed... just cannot happen.
Even if you were to take knees... 6 point game, 6 minutes left, burn two minutes, go up nine... you're in GREAT position. You have the game won in every essence... LEGITIMATELY THE ONLY thing you cannot have is what happened. Absolute program wrenching catastrophe had that resulted in a L.
In all honesty probably should've been Feagin in terms of more confidence in ball security, but not sure Valentine had one fumble in his time here before that play.
awfully high bar when it comes to Illini football, but would've likely been top of the list in terms of most devastating single-plays I can remember. Not to dwell upon it, but truth be told that Valentine fumble simply cannot happen.

It's poor technique. Need two hands on the ball. Not to dwell upon it, but truth be told that Valentine fumble simply cannot happen.

I’m sorry but at some point our dbacks have to jump a route on third and long. We have 3 guys around the ball and they are always behind the receiver. I would also like to see us dial up some more blitz packages. Gabe seemed like he was rarely in the QB’s face.Maybe it’s just me, but I thought it was USC making plays as much as it was our defense. I don’t know how many absolutely perfect balls their QB threw but it was a lot. Heckel was right there on the game tying TD, just a perfect back shoulder throw.
We can definitely play better on defense, but I also think a tip of the cap to USC is in order.
Gritty, gritty win.
IMO , Mr. Valentine will be a star All B$G and later play at the next level.....all he needs is 15-20 + reps a game , bulking up his body and experience to show his outstanding skillset........he runs like a deer , can change directions in an instant and has great acceleration in the open field.........he is one of my top 5 favorites on this special team........he really really is......I agree with ball security but that was also Valentine's first career fumble and Feagin theoretically "fumbled" earlier.
