Tanner Heckel starting is the biggest problem in that secondary (and team). Giving up the 4th&7 TD is brutal. I think CB is overall okay with Clarke and Cox getting majority of the reps.
That was one of the most infuriating drives I've seen. Legitimately every play they were not ready and didn't know where to line up. We were lucky to even have a 4th and 7 as their QB missed Lemon when literally no one lined up with him pre snap.

The on field communication was really poor - really need Matt Bailey back.

Incredibly foolish move by Mackovic. Still frustrating
Mackovic never for a second intended, or even intimated, that he viewed Illinois as anything but a stepping-stone to what he felt was a job (NFL or top-level college) he deserved. It was kind of a 50/50 feeling where you admire the rare honesty, while being offended by the slight.

Maybe in retrospect, he realized that he might have been able to have long-term success here, and that we were a good fit. On the other hand, he’s someone who lost HC jobs in both college and the NFL as a result of player mutinies.

As I’ve said on Loyalty before, Mackovic was a real @$$hole who would turn his charm on or off depending on whom he was with and what he wanted from them…He was a smart coach, but not a very nice person. I wasn’t sorry to see him go at all back then…

What is Patterson doing on that 3rd and 16? Not exactly sure about the "really, really good throw"... it worked out for them, but 50% of the time that gets picked off.
He has a clear play on the ball, but seems like he's afraid of getting cut from underneath or hurting his body. He's looked hurt the whole year, and just hasn't played well.

He's likely the 4th corner option had Scott been healthy (since you can move him inside or out).

Anyone know if there is any merit to the reports that USC had food poison?

Watching various YouTube USC podcasts the consensus is that many(not sure how many)players especially on defense were suffering from food poisoning. They were weakened by illness and couldn’t generate a pass rush or stop our ground game.

FYI: Coach Lincoln Riley has NOT verified or used sickness as an excuse for the loss to a low level Illinois team. However lots of post game excuse making by some players about food poisoning being a cause for their poor performance. Their poor clock management at the end of the game was their biggest excuse.
