Will be interesting next year with the ability to appeal balls and strikes. Wonder if they will keep stats on how many each ump gets overturned.
The stat I want to see kept — and I’m sure will be with the way they track everything now — is how often an overturned call actually has an impact on the game. By that I mean how often a reverse to a strike helps quell a rally or a reverse to a ball subsequently leads to a run(s). Everyone loves to piss and moan about the umpiring and the impact it has. Now we’ll actually see if true. For example, the called third strike against Padres (Bogaerts I think) that would have been overturned if had challenge. Would the Padres have ended up tying or going ahead after the reversal or would game result have been the same anyway?

Game 4 Starter?

I guess it could be Boyd, but I believe I'm going to return to my Civale/Rea/Brown recommendation. I'd probably pitch them in this sequence and immediately pull anyone who allows three base runners in an inning. (Brown could be on an even shorter string.) Strategically mix-in Pomeranz, Thielbar, Kittredge, and Palencia, saving Keller once again for the 9th.

Friday is a day of rest for the entire staff and then we have Boyd/Imanaga to get us through 5-6 innings on Saturday. Horton replaces Soroka and opens the NLCS against LA/PHIL next week. Rogers might replace Brown for the NLCS.

I'm sure some statheads already have that info on the times they use replay to look at calls.

I have a sneaking suspicion that you will see few challenges past the 5th inning. Managers aren't in charge, and its going to be hard for the players to be objective about it, and not let their emotions get in the way. They complain nearly as often about correct calls as they do bad ones.

I think it may be the opposite. I think managers will have guidelines in place and when they’ll “let” their players challenge — inning, situation, etc. I could see managers wanting to limit challenges while on D to the catcher. Sure emotions could cause some unwise early challenges, but I think a few that don’t end in reversals will curtail that. Plus, I believe if a challenge is successful, you don’t lose it, so even if you use one in third inning as long as you’re successful you’ll have it for later in game too.

You mean for base running challenges (out versus safe)? You’re right, they may well. But I think the balls/strikes challenges are a little different. Just yesterday some on here commented that home plate ump was terrible meaning balls and strikes one would assume. But we’ll now be able to see how much those missed calls truly impact game beyond that one pitch. I’m sure there are plenty of Padre fans who will go to their graves believing that missed call against Bogaerts cost them the guy. Now we’ll know if that was truly the case. I just think it will be interesting to see (and know) how valid all the “ump cost us the game with that call” complaints really are.

I do not get this. They are playing in LA, they should have the late game but they are catering to the east coast Philadelphia market.
I can kind of understand it, but then start the LA game at 5 ET. Much less impactful to miss first couple innings cuz not home from work yet than last couple of innings cuz you fell asleep.

The last 2 games they left after the first without permission.
The last playoff game I went to before tonight, Quintana started for the Cubs. How old is that dude?
I believe the announcer said he has been in the league 13 years.
IIRC, when he was with the Cubs, I said to myself that look, it appears the Cubs finally have a professional major league pitcher on their staff.
