IU has a much more solid NIL investment than people realize and a solid booster base.

They're benefitting from the modern era of CFB. Cignetti only leaves if Penn State makes him an absolutely ridiculous offer. It is literally just about how much money he wants to be paid.

1. I will say that a program hiring Kliff Kingsbury might work with the current GM model of CFB. Let him do the offensive stuff and let the GM get the defensive players. I can see him doing well at Oklahoma if they dump Venables (not advocating it though).

2, We seen what a good Air Raid offense might look like in the Big Ten, we saw it at Homecoming with USC.

3. Wisconsin's version failed because it was an entire program 180, especially from the philosophy that worked for a long time. See Nebraska under Callahan.

4. Apparently in 2004, Illinois wanted Mike Leach himself.
I vaguely remember that. I can't remember if Leach declined an interview, or RG wasn't interested because Leach was perceived as too loose of a cannon.

Or if it was a message board wish list and didn't happen at all.

I just cant ever see RG taking Leach seriously .
Leach was simply not the button down, blue blazer/khaki pants/white shirt/repp tie guy that RG expected and pretty much demanded

Indiana’s powers that be should learn from Illinois’ past. Whatever it takes to keep their unicorn in Cignetti they should pony up and pay. On the basketball side, Illinois had its unicorn in Bill Self, and Ron Guenther let him get away. 🫤

This is really where I was headed from the beginning. If he stays....if he turns down stupid money and/or Indinia pays up, or this is where he wants to hang his hat, build his statue, or even wait for his dream job that's not PSU....whatever he wants.... mad props to him.

But more than anything....it was just an avenue to call Indinia's football program a 71 Mercury station wagon.

And throw shade at PSU if they don't make Cignetti an offer he can't refuse. I mean the dude is from Pennsylvania.

Which may be why he doesn't take the job. He knows about Penn State football. It is a cult.

Solid GM and a DC that can do it all himself … It’ll work …

Kliff is elite on the trail and really good raising $$$ … And offensively he’s definitely elite …

Indiana won’t let Cig get away … Cig would have to be dead set on leaving himself and no extension or amount of money mattered … And that’s not the case …

Don’t forget Sexton runs the show … He got Jimbo his money, got Franklin his money and now will throw another one of his clients at Penn State … Time will tell if they take the bait like Bama did …

I respect your opinion Indy, and I agree the IU can match the money, but he has no ties to IU and I can't see a coach with the ego of Cignetti not going to one of the premier college football programs to show he can win there. It's apples and oranges in terms of prestige in the college football landscape - and while he can take it easy into retirement at IU as the hero of football there, he certainly seems the type to go for the biggest job he can get. He also logically knows that continuing to be at the top at IU is a much bigger challenge than doing it at a place like PSU - it just is. I would certainly respect him for staying, but it would be a shock

I think the "show he can win there" argument is the one in favor of staying at IU. He can be another coach that wins at PSU or he can do the unthinkable and win a national championship at IU.

But it's the same argument people made when Bill Self was about to leave Champaign. People said he should want to do something no one else has done before by winning a national basketball title at Illinois instead of being a "caretaker" at KU. But Self's decision was far more complex than that.

Honestly, I don’t think PSU is as attractive as Florida or FSU. It’s a recruiting hot bed in Florida and both have a legitimate history. Honestly, at this point, PSU seems like a fading star.

I still think people are overrating the allure of Penn State. PSU is nowhere close to Kentucky basketball, and look what Kentucky had to settle for. Look who PSU got after Paterno left. Bill O’Brien to James Franklin. Not heavy hitters there.

I see Cignetti as Brad Stevens. He’s only going to leave for the absolute best job. For Stevens, it was going from Butler to the Boston Celtics. What’s the best job in college football or pro football? I’d say it’s still Alabama. Cignetti was there with Saban for a long time. I think thats the only job he leaves for.

I think he seems like the guy that DOESN’T go for the biggest job he can get. He coached for 40 years mostly at small schools and in obscurity. In fact, so me a P4 head coach who coached at lesser school longer than Cignetti.

In fact so much he seems to be against the “power schools”. Cignetti doesn’t want to win AT the power schools. He wants to win AGAINST the power schools. He’s a David. Not a Goliath.

That's who he got a job from. People have romanticized him a little bit too much at this point. If he really wanted to do the David thing so bad? He would have stayed at JMU.

Indiana offered him a job, not Alabama.

He would have took Alabama over Indiana... and if Deboer hadn't turned it around this year...well he might have got a shot.
