Exhibition is exhibition but wasn’t impressed by Michigan or Purdue but thought Indiana looked pretty good. (Maybe competition level). Smith and K-Renn are really good but not really impressed by rest of team. We have two centers better than they have.

Michigan beat StJohns in OT 95-94. Back and forth finish, entertaining game.

Yaxel Lendeborg 25 pts 10 reb

Mara was the starter at center, 13 pts 5 reb

Morez off the bench 15 pts 8 reb (5-9 free throws, 0-0 from three)

You can have both, Morez succeeds at Michigan, and we gain Big Z, and we’re better off with our fit. I’d rather we have a tight knit group of guys who enjoy playing together, than a disgruntled player rocking the boat. Please stay optimistic, and stop the negativity. I’m extremely excited for this group of young men.

This Rez thing is becoming Podz 2.0…I was a big fan of Rez all the way back from grammar school, but think it’s time to let it go.
That's the difference between the two. I was never a fan of Podz. Not before he was here, not when he was here and even less so now.

As LoveIlliniHoops said though, both can be successful.

I don’t have the receipts, but my hot take was Mirk was going to be an upgrade over Morez. Last year, it was either LaTulip or Werner who had a hot take early in the year that Tomi was an upgrade over Coleman, which I think turned out to be true when Tomi was healthy. Coleman obviously a better athlete and more versatile defender, but Tomi clearly better guarding 5s, a more consistent shooter and better playmaker.

Same thing with Mirk this year. Morez obviously a better athlete and an amazing rebounder. And while Morez was a great help defender last year he was sneaky bad guarding the ball or in the post. If Mirk can give us about 75% of Morez’ rebounding, be respectable from 3 (>32% or so), along with his ball handling and playmaking I think is on net a better player.

And even if Morez is a better all around player, Mirk is just a better fit for the way we want to play. With this 5 out offense, I think it works best if you have 5 basketball players out there for lack of a better word. That is, 5 guys who can dribble, pass and shoot. Still think Morez is more athlete than basketball player at this point which is why I think we kept playing Ben. With Mirk, we can have a full 40 minutes of running offense through a playmaking big if we want. I just think that’s going to be really tough to guard.

Probably some level of coping, and obviously will have to see what it looks like in the regular season. But early returns look like we won’t have much of a dropoff in that roster spot if any.

Edit: and just one more thing is there’s obviously a moneyball aspect to all of this. Rumor was we were giving Morez $1M. I don’t know what we wound up paying to get Mirk over here but I’m guessing it was substantially less than that. So even if Morez is better Mirk likely better value.

Thank you. He is not the best or only power 4 rebounding, non shooting guy in the country.

I am loving what we have added at the 4 for that role in Mirk who can rebound and more. Backed up by Big Z and Ben to me it is an improvement from last year.

I mean, “Mirkoholics” just sounds way better than “Johnsonoholics”.
