You aren't eligible to return if you went through the draft process.

agree. FWLIW, setting pay ceilings for all prospects and adhering to them should be the default. I think it is, by and large, with our staff. It helps a ton that we're adept at pivoting
But we have seen that the ceiling for other programs keep rising, so we must keep up with inflation. I do agree that we can probably always find a guy that fits for what want to pay, but Dix got like $2M. Who expected that?

I think we are past the peak. The true game changers -- the top 5-10, sure lottery picks -- will continue to get paid, and paid well. Anyone who needs development is going to get a lot less. A euro pickup (-ic), or a transferring upperclassman will usually perform better, for less, and with likely with less attitude (including parental attitude).

Euros and upperclassmen transfers are not immune to their prices going up due to competition. Dix was an upperclassman transfer. Sarr was a Euro. We got priced out of both of them.

I could swear I saw somewhere it mentioned that Tomi could've gone to market for more money than he got from us this off-season.

Sure, but to be fair every player who returned could have entered and made more money on the open market

I'm just saying that (and what you're saying too) to illustrate that we will not win any recruitments where money is a leading motivator.

From a pure money perspective, should a player always enter the portal after each season and go to the highest bidder? That would frequently mean a different school each year in college. Long-term that might not be best for their development, but from a "just grab the money now" perspective it may be optimal.

for high end players maybe. but there are plenty of players why enter the transfer portal and can't find another home. so it's a risk

Purely from a money perspective, yes, you should enter the portal every year. It's like being a free agent every season in pro sports. The owners would never, ever agree to that. If you have a bad season, stay with your current team. If you have a great season, but not good enough to be a sure fire NBA first rounder....enter the portal.

Unless the NCAA(or whoever) can make the player obligated to stay two years OR bring back the rule that transferring means you have to sit out a year....this will be a problem. Not sure why they didn't reinstate that rule. Was that a COVID "temporary" change?

The portal is more detrimental than NIL. If these kids can make a million bucks, cool. If they can transfer every year without recourse......there in lies the issue.

No guarantee they stay the same player. Many guys flip a good situation for an unideal one (just for the cash), and it backfires.
