Question: When Fickell was at tOSU and at Cincy, was he an Offensive or Defensive background guy ?

Defense... he played D line at OSU and started his coaching career as a D line coach.

I spent last week in Columbus where I grew up. On Thursday night met a HS friends for drinks. One of them runs a hair salon and, coincidentally, told me that she knows Fickell's mother, who does the same, and that he went to DeSales, which is one of two Catholic high schools in the north end of town where we grew up.

I'd forgotten that. Anyway, looked him up the next day. Phenom as a kid. His mom dropped him off at Watterson High School (the other Catholic HS, and in my immediate neighborhood) when he was 7 and his uncle coached wrestling there. Fickell was so big by that age that he sparred successfully with the wrestlers. He went on to become the greatest heavyweight wrestler in Ohio HS history, and had a track record of winning matches in under 90 seconds or so. I watched the video of his state-title winning match his senior year. Was 230, undefeated, and up against a guy 270 with one loss who was going to be a lineman at Michigan. The match was over in 50 seconds; his opponent was like a defenseless baby.

Fickell shows up at Ohio State the following August and John Cooper asks his assistant (who recruited him) what the hype is about because, although 6'5", he's only 230 and slow. Guy says "yeah; wait until we put the pads on." Fickell takes the starting nose guard spot within a week as a true freshman.

He's apparently as fierce a competitor as exists. It will be interesting to see how he deals with his current sitch.

Henry has not been stellar so I'm not on here to defend him. We don't have dudes on D. X and Gabe are about it and one of them is hurt and the other can be doubled into invisible because we don't have any other dudes. Get more dudes.
Don't need to have all NFL dudes to be a successful defense in cfb. Look at our Rose Bowl starters on that side led by J Leman. They played within a defined role and weren't out of position too often

I think it would be fascinating to see a documentary on Fickell’s first years at Wisconsin (or similar type struggle of a coach moving up and not succeeding) with a real, honest unbundling of what went wrong — especially from his perspective. Not expecting to see something like this as I can’t see anyone doing it and actually being honest if they planned to coach again. Seeing this from HC, staff, AD, donors and players perspective would be much more interesting to me than the success stories.
Fickell needs to go the BB path and play in the NFL for a lil

Clemson is in a tough spot, I don’t see dabo ever competing for championships again but who else would they get? I’d argue an acc job at Clemson has a better chance at being a long tenure than any sec job, so being in the acc could actually be more attractive to some coaches

After another loss, Dabo’s comments are as benign and generic as ever. The game passed him by and don’t think he’s smart enough to successfully re-invent himself and adapt. Does he still yell at fans that call into his tv show?

Hugh Freeze is gone too, this has gotten completely out of control.

If you had told me 2 years ago that in 2 years Penn State would be 3-5 after 8 games, on a 5-game losing streak, in the basement of the B10 standings, firing James Franklin, AND that Indiana would be 9-0, ranked #2 in the country, with legitimate national championship chances, I would've had you committed to a mental institution!

What a crazy time we're in right now...

Not to make light of Hugh Freeze's predicament, but I read down through the thread beginning with the breaking news of the cancelled tee time at 09:46 today, immediate mockery concerning the purported battiness of such SEC fever-swamp rumor-mongering, and the subsequent announcement of the firing at 13:38, and I laughed out loud.
