I’ve waited to make this post … But I don’t want to hold off and you hear his name start popping up for these jobs …

I want to be clear … Bret is focused on this season and this team … He has not directly engaged with anyone or any program …

However - there are multiple programs that are interested … All down South … We all know who they are …

I don’t think Bret leaves … But I fully expect them to come knocking …
Appreciate the heads up. That said, I absolutely don’t believe he will take another job. We will come close to offering whatever another school would offer, and he is set up nicely to become the greatest Illini coach in the last 75 years. He gets to keep a stable spot for his family, stay in his home state, and keep this thing rolling. If he leaves and gets fired again from the SEC, his legacy will be completely tarnished.

The reality of the matter is that all roads down south lead to him being fired, IMO.

Maybe he goes to Florida or LSU and finally has 25+ million in NIL and the best in state recruits you could ask for.

Best case scenario? Gets a raise and an NIL boost

Agree …

We also have one thing all these other schools don’t … Josh Whitman …

People don’t realize how much that matters …

LSU doesn't have an athletic director and has an interim president and yet is still considered in the top 3 for head coaching spot among this crazy coaching carousel. At the end of the day, it comes down to it still being LSU. Top NIL, top facilities, and the recruiting in its backyard.

If Ed Orgeron could win a Natty there... The talent abounds in Louisiana

(1) I am very confident Bret is not going anywhere
(2) I am very confident there will be rumors that convince Illinois to pay him whatever is necessary (or increase the NIL, or etc.)

Anybody got insider knowledge of Maryland? I don't believe this is true just yet....though you look up Locksley on Google and their are a dozen articles saying he should be fired or is a candidate to be fired by Monday...

You're right to have doubts about this report. Reinhart is not a serious account and no one else is reporting it. Maryland has a path to a bowl game (beat Rutgers and MSU) and there are a billion job openings that look better than your job. Plus, Maryland has a young QB with promise and one of the best 2026 prospects committed.

Indy how much more money in NIL does Bret need to compete with the Big dogs in conference

I can try:

Top job LSU- top school in a state that produces lots of NFL talent with a monopoly in said state to boot.

Rest of Tier 1:

Florida- top state university in the big 2 recruiting states. Only if, fans hate the AD making the hire.
Penn State- Big program. Main recruiting area PA is drying up, but can easily poach NJ, OH, and have ties to the DMV. Fanbase is cultish though.

Tier 2- Crazy money but crazy boosters and crazy rivals- Arky and Auburn. Auburn has Yellawood money and Arkansas has money from Tyson, JB Hunt, Jerry Jones, and a bunch of Waltons. However they have insane rivals with Auburn dealing with Bama and Arky dealing with Texas and Mizzou. Also both schools have some wacky boosters.

Tier 3- VT and OkSt. OK St has had money issues since T Boone died. Va Tech is kinda in a Wisconsin situation, outsiders' views of them are really propped up by 2000s.

Tier 4- UCLA and Stanford. UCLA is broke and Stanford has academic restrictions.
Great post. I think the political environment at LSU knocks the job down to at least 3rd. Put yourself in someone like Drink's shoes:

Are you really going to go into that mess for less years guaranteed (and the gov as your AD) than you'd get at PSU/UF? The talent isn't THAT much better and what happens if the next Governor wants to make his mark?

Great point. Anybody jumping onto the carousel for a huge bag at a school with huge expectations must accept the serious risk of being fired too. Risk and regard are proportional. Decide what kind of career and legacy you want before rolling the dice.

We are already sending a team out to all corners of the earth to procure the finest slab of marble known to man just to carve Bret's statue.

For reference, that is for making us bowl eligible 2 years in a row with the chance for back to back 10 win seasons for the first time ever.

Florida and LSU are ready to fire you for achieving any less than that. And you better have a Heisman finalist sprinkled in there, a road win in Tuscaloosa, playoff appearance every year...

I think he's a B1G Ten guy.

Also, if we are in the trust-tree...Notre Dame would make a ton of sense over the SEC to me. --Blasphemous, I know..

SEC is one big giant mess. Have one bad season and you're on the hot seat. Start the next season slowly and you're already gone.

Great for collecting a buyout. Bad if you actually want to build a program

There has to be chatter around coach B being a candidate for one of the roles. I would not be surprised to have his name mentioned. Not saying he would go, but if I were a GM and had to find a coach who has proven to build a program, sustain it the right way, bring revenue to a school, and maximize talent, Coach B is your guy

Obviously other top 20 schools want Illinois’ football coach. This year. Next year. And the year after. They aren’t going to get him because we go a great thing going.

Brett has been fantastic here, but there a twofold dynamic why I don’t see Brett leaving.
1. I can’t big time SEC jobs taking a “risk” on Brett who struggled at Arkansas. We all know how great Brett has been, but I think an LSU or Florida fan base would have a meltdown if they hired Brett.

2. Why would Brett go to another school slightly above Illinois or at the same level where he’s going to get a much shorter leash? Money maybe, but at this point is the pathway for success at Illinois better where the foundation has been laid than another SEC school that fires there coach every three years?
