Rebound rate is really the stat to look at to analyze rebounding in a modern settings.

Illinois' offensive rebound rate: 64%
Illinois' defensive rebound rate: 91%

Illinois didn't force a bunch of turnovers or block a bunch of shots. They did, however, rebound 91% of their opponents' misses and held their opponent to 31% shooting. Limited rim chances to EIGHT for the entire game, of which they made 5.

That is good defense.

I will admit this game has me excited for the season with 2 very large pieces still out. Granted, we just beat a team that might barely beat a really good high school team. Hyperbole, before you blast me.

1. Mirkovic is a stud. What a nice piece to have.
2. Big Z will not contribute a whole lot this year. Sorry. He is not athletic, too skinny and sloppy with the ball.
3. Wagler is not a one and done. Not close to it. I watched a one and done last night in Koa Peat for Arizona. And Dybansta for BYU. Those dudes are one and done.
4. This team is going to struggle to score when they are not shooting 46% from 3. They don't have many guys that create their own shot.
5. Boswell is just a great defender. Wish they had 5 guys that could defend like him.
6. How much better will they be with the 2 starters that they were missing? Can't wait to see.
And the 2 guys who will be the best at it didn't play

Illinois has always been correct with their Availability Reports info. Availability Reports are posted publicly on bigten.org between 2 hours-to-2h30m prior to tipoff.

With the Lee injury, IL posted it on the Availability Report on or before 5:14pm (2h20m prior to tipoff), and Underwood addressed the situation in his various game day interviews, all was proper & professional.

Nice, always good to help out on the sharing of new info. This is a huge fanbase & there's always going to be times where some fans may not be up-to-date on a new situation. Go Illini

OK....finally got to watch the entire game and just finished the replay.

First lemme get this off my chest, I don't know what rules govern it, probably advertising, but I was so excited to get home last night (~10) and queue up the replay on B1G+.
Not available until the next day. If it's advertising, just give it to me with the full broadcast ads and all!
If it's not, and not prohibited otherwise, just gfy BTN.

Ok....old man yelling at clouds/off

How in the he!! any message board warrior can Karen critique that game is just silly af!

With 10ish minutes left in the game our opponent had 37 points, we were shooting 50% from 3pt, and had a ~50-10 rebounding edge.

I dgaf who you are playing.... Sister Mary Barnum Baily Circus Clown University....The Buddhist Temple College of Chanting Monks.....this is impressive.

Ohbythewaywe'remissingtwoofourpossiblestartingfive.

So, yeah ok.... FT's and a few freshman gonna freshman. In the first game of the year. Imagine that.

Now...to Anti Karen

EVERYTHING about David Mirkovich jumps off the screen. Every. Thing.

His shoe game. His goofy run up the court. His court vision. His shooting. His nose for the ball. His reckless abandon on the boards. His confidence...as a "freshman".
He had the dub dub in the first half!!!!

I am officially a Mirk Maniak©.

Tomi's gonna be a first round draft pick.

More physical Ben with a chip on his shoulder playing the role he fits as a 6/7th man.

Bam shutting down the opposing teams best player Ruffin, who was a big time HS recruit and solid G at OleMiss.

As a couple others have said...the versatility of this team is unreal...and it might end up being the best shooting Illinois team we've ever seen.

Yeah....go put some dollars on Mirk B1G FOY. Don't be surprised to see him creep onto 2nd or 3rd team All B1G. His game translates to B1G basketball.
I don't think you'll see conference play smack him in the face like it did Humrichous last year.

I think he's gonna smack the B1G in the face.

Is Wagler REALLY pronounced “Wogler”? “Wahgler”?

The game last night didn't show me too much other than we have lots of guys that can shoot open threes and hit them. Jackson St.'s size was a huge problem for them. We could have just passed it down low and made lay up after lay up it we wanted. I feel like if we wanted to, we could have won by more and held them to far less than they got. I think Brad was trying a lot of different things and mixes after they went up by a lot and it was clear there was no contest here.

Mirkovic looks really, really good and a little raw. That being said, if he continues to get major minutes, he may end up putting together one of the best freshman seasons we have ever seen in an Illini uniform.
This offense will be better than last year's and score 90 ppg. I know that's a lot, but I believe this team will have way too many good shooters and distributors on the floor at all times to score less. Also, the pace of play will be super fast. I'm excited to see what they do against better competition with maybe, a good center or good forwards on the floor.

Your point #2 is insane, and while it occurred to me that our 3 point shooting and rebounding were as optimal as it gets, I never thought of it this way (so thank you for extrapolating it for everyone)

0 for 37 from 3 and still score 91 and win by 36 points... just absurd... and you have to look around the country at top teams playing similar or worse comp while not having 2 of their top 6 miss the game and only win by 5-15 points
Yep. An offensive rebound is basically equivalent to a defensive steal because you’re stealing a possession from the other team.

People have trouble picturing just how efficient a good offensive rebounding team can be, but just imagine if we had 21 steals on defense last night.

People would be saying “oh my gosh, we have a top 5 defense in the country!”. Exactly. Invert that and that’s why we’ll likely have top 5 offense in the country (currently #2).

I don’t see Z playing any real minutes during the real games unless Tomi is in foul trouble. I see Tomi at 33+ minutes in the tough ones and Z very spot minutes. Plus Mirkovic is just better than Z so it makes no sense to play the twins together anyway
Doesn't make any sense to overwork Tomi when you actually have a legitimate backup center.

Zvonimir is also the best rim protector on the roster which will matter more when you're not playing Jackson State and you get into games with power conference teams with comparable size and athleticism.

Coach style comments -- if you only want the orange tint, move along.

Humrich and Davis had solid games. They did not do anything flashy. They just did their assigned tasks and were (mostly) in the right places at the right time. The offense was much smoother when Davis was on the floor.

Big Z: Needs to work on protecting the ball. When you have a rebound, the first priority is holding onto it. You can't just lazily bring it down, and you especially can't go straight to a dribble. He lost multiple balls after the initial grab. Another issue is his passes. The passes, especially the ones inside out, are telegraphed. Several were tipped, and at least one was stolen. He also needs to get his arms up sooner when guarding the perimeter and they are going to shoot. They took several successful shots over him.

Mirkovik - He did well based on his size and strength. There were a TON of mental mistakes. First, like Z, there wasn't enough emphasis placed on protecting the ball. There were multiple lazy passes, some dangerous passes, and some poor decisions when to pass, e.g. the pass out to Davis when he should have just dunked it with authority. He also is too loose with the dribble in traffic. Mirkovik was out of position defensively a fair bit, and did a poor job of closing out on his man; he reacted too late, thinking "should I", vs. just doing it. The offense often stalled with Mirkovik in the lineup and then smoothed once Davis came in. Some of this is arriving late. Some of it is not.

Wagler: A bunch of freshman mistakes. He tried to do too much 1:1 at times. (Not bad play, just freshman play.)

Defense: A solid team defense was nowhere to be found tonight. The defense played was purely using size/athleticism vs. being in the right positions and doing the right things. Rotations were off (missing, missed). Closeouts were poor. I get we had some people out. This looked to be more than just a coordination issue. Individuals were looking lost and didn't have their job down yet.

Offense: Despite the score, the offense didn't seem to flow most of the time. (It flowed far better with Jake than with Mirkovik.) One issue was the passes, both inside out, and around the horn were not crisp enough. They gave the defense time to rotate and recover. Another issue was when an player near the hoop noticed a teammate driving at them. They blindly vacated the area leaving their defender right in the path of the driving player. Stay and seal them off.

Lets get better each game, and make a run in March.
I appreciate this more than most on here after just now watching the game on replay.

Offense: number one thing I noticed is that many, if not most of the three point attempts were off a pass looking to set the shooter up in rhythm. Our length facilitated this and our percentage was off the charts.

Complaints from last season and beyond was that we never seemed ready or looking to shoot off a pass.

Defense: zone will be played with the size advantage we will have in most games, per Weber. Happy to hear that because speed and athleticism will be our kryptonite.

We played under control and relaxed on both sides. Excited to see how we handle high major teams but the parts we have excite me more now than prior to this thrashing.

Quick role player comments:
Mirk - no wonder Moretz transferred
Hum - Adelia spice gave him swag demonstrated by the two down the lane drives, one with an unsuccessful throw down.
Jake - from State Farm was smooth with the jumper
Z - good timing block on driving guards
Wagler - great stroke in rhythm
Jakstys- respect

Off subject, but I often wonder about Eastwood's health. I gabbed with him one time when he was a young man when he was playing in a celebrity tennis match in a Pebble Beach private complex in CA. He was extremely kind and friendly. But he must at least mid 90s; I hope this comment finds him in good health. I think that was '69 BTW.

Hopefully Boswell sorts out his finishing at the rim earlier in the season than he did last year. Three missed layups early on, that was an issue last year, especially first 2/3 of the season...

Expectations vs. Reality...Some prognosticators have hinted that we are a potential final four team.. Based on the games we have played, we are not based on the criticisms noted...SW16 yes ! final 4 unlikely even when we get our best players back..

It will inevitably take care of itself. One of Tomi's struggles last year was fouling. It will be nice to not have to fundamentally change the way we attack when Tomi has to sit. Z is going to play more than a bit part. He is also learning how things work in Brad's schemes. He likely has better basketball in front of him than he showed in his first game.

On a separate note, Wagler getting to the line 10 times is a great sign for that young man. There will be nights when the shots aren't falling, and you need to manufacture some offense. I expect Stojakovic and Petrovic will also give us some of that, but its an under-rated skill.

I’m going to hang this post in the Louvre when Big Z goes on a heater and is 6-8 from 3 in a big B1G win for us.
