For everyone who thinks that should not have been a flagrant foul:

Intentionally grabbing a player is considered a flagrant foul, likely a Flagrant 1, because it involves unnecessary and excessive contact that is not a legitimate basketball play. The specific call depends on the severity: a Flagrant 1 involves unnecessary contact, while a Flagrant 2 involves brutal or dangerous contact. In either case, the opposing team gets two free throws and possession of the ball.

In your view, according to the rule you just shared, do you feel every foul when a team is down to stop the clock is a flagrant?

That foul is committed EXACTLY like KB executed it a couple of thousand times a year in college hoops and is considered a common foul even though intentional. That they thought it was flagrant is an egregious error even though it was obvious that KB was trying to hold him up. It was obvious on replay that the TT player collapsed to the floor immediately after KB let go even though he was not off balance but trying to draw the foul. That referee should be banned for the season as there should not have been even a video review with three guys watching. They acted like none of them saw the play in the first place.
Exactly. We’ve all seen common fouls NOT called that were 10x harder than that one.

I dont pretend to understand these stats but we had 3 players with a higher ORtg than Toppin?
Yeah truthfully I’m not sure how it’s calculated but I believe the 6 turnovers drags the ORtg down, even if he puts up 35 points

3 points attempts were the same (22 vs 22). Texas Tech had more shot attempts in the paint.

Texas Tech had 20 assists.
IL had 5.

Stats don’t lie. Texas Tech shot 4 FTs for the entire game.

Toppin himself had 25 Shot Attempts. He shot 1 FT for the entire game. I’ve never seen an offensive player attempt 25 shots and shoot 1 FT. And it’s not like those shots were outside shots. He attempted 2 threes.

Reverse these team stats and this thread would be talking about the worst officiating in years especially if it had been in TT’s home court

I actually thought the refs swallowed their whistle a good amount in Tech's favor. They were being very physical with Boswell specifically. I think you could easily go back and count 6 or 7 fouls that Boswell should've drawn that weren't called.

Also, our defensive foul rate last year was one of the lowest in the country. The last few years Brad has preached defense without fouling. On the other hand, Texas Tech bad a pretty high foul rate last season.

The rule says you can't grab them, even when everyone fully knows what is happening. If this call was a one off, then it was a bad call. If the refs start calling it consistently this season, then it was a good (correct) call.

Three Instant Observations From Illinois' 81-77 Win Over Texas Tech

https://www.si.com/college/illinois...tion-illinois-dominant-win-jackson-state-2025
"The Illini don't have a go-to guy – they have a bunch of 'em" "The cliche is that a team has to have a player it can go to in important moments or in the closing seconds that it can count on. But if you have more than one – or (sheesh!) a half dozen of them – that creates an injury- and matchup-proof resilience that otherwise can't be replicated."

Brad Underwood's vision has materialized

After watching the post-game interview with BU, I am getting the feeling like he knows he is the cat who swallowed the canary. My reference is that he knows he has found a special group of kids who compliment each other in many ways, are individually more advanced than anyone knows, and even more importantly fit together more than even he thought was possible. He seems to want to tell the world that is the case, but his judgement tells him to pass and let it come out on the court. What makes this team have such a high ceiling is that there is so much growth that can happen due to how the pieces fit together. Too bad only 5 can play at a time, but there is little drop in performance as they shuffle in and out. In my 70 years watching the Illini play, I have never seen such depth, especially given the performance from guys that have never played collegiate hoops or together. I think Brad likes the taste of that canary.

So 6 players had a better offensive rating than Toppin? I really dont understand these metrics then.

Ortg by itself doesn't tell a ton. It basically says when you have the ball do you do something good or bad.

To get a better picture you have to pair Ortg with usage. Toppin had a high Ortg with a really high usage, and thus had a very good and impactful game. Compare that to Big Z, one of the players with a higher Ortg. Big Z did some good things in the few moments he got the ball. If he got the ball a lot more, he almost certainly would start doing more bad things and his Ortg would decrease.
