I'll really miss Shota. He certainly didn't live up to his first-half performance after the all-star break, but he was all in for Chicago and the Cubs. And a quality human being on top being a quality pitcher.

The commercial of him singing in the shower still haunts me.

Imagine this could open the door for a RHP like Michael King or Dylan Cease.
I think he can still come back if both sides agree on him taking the qualifying offer (1 year at $22M ?) . Which they might be willing to make since it's only one year.

Declining Shota means they have to be all in on Suarez, Cease or Valdez, or in on a trade for someone big.

Any of the other free agents wouldn’t be much of an upgrade and would likely cost a similar amount to Shota’s option.

Shota > Cease

It’s a close call, but Cease is 2 years younger, more durable, has better raw stuff, and peripherals that would seem to indicate that with the Cubs’ d behind him, he’d put up better numbers than Shota going forward.

He’s one of 3 free agent starters (Framber Valdez and Ranger Suarez being the other two) where there’s even a reasonable argument that he’d be a better multi-year signing that Shota.

I noticed the durable part. Undoubtedly the defense would help. I am still a fan, so I root for the Cub players that we have. That makes me a fan of Shota.
Caveat: if a player sucks bad enough and my team won't quit playing him I can be ready to cut him loose.

Might be a slow winter given the potential for a work stoppage.

For the Cubs or overall? If the former, they’re doing a great PR job.

Jed: “Yeah, let’s say the reason we’re not signing anyone is because of a potential work stoppage.”

Ricketts: “If that will work, then hell yeah.”

There likely won’t be any more unsigned FAs then there usually are. And I’ve read that teams are more willing to trade potential free agents a year earlier (as in this offseason) rather than wait and have potential work stoppage lower their value/make it more difficult next off season.

How about a continuing resolution? I'm happy with the status quo

I’d be shocked if we are actually in on King. Jed doesn’t spend big on the bullpen. Imai, however, definitely seems like the kind of guy he likes, though the fees are always hard to swallow.
The idea of a work stoppage is insane. Who isn’t getting rich in baseball? Players do great, team values appreciate at an insane rate… would be really dumb.

I don’t think Cubs would be looking at him as relief pitcher, nor that King would sign anywhere to move back to the bullpen. He’s been a starter last two seasons.
