Marching Illini

Excellent show! Best of the season!!
Member of MI back in the 70s. That would be the 1970s, not the 1870s, although it sure feels like it sometimes.
It was a really great show, but you can't be spraying those fire extinguishers on the field like that. Creates an unnecessary hazard for the players.

Phenomenal! One of my nephews is a member of the Marching Illini. Couldn't be more proud. Last but not least.... CHIEEEEF!!!
Congrats to your nephew.
There is always going to be discussions on this site concerning the chief. Some say forget about it and move on, some say bring him back. But I tell you what is very encouraging to me, so many years later since he's been gone, is still the rebel yell for the chief at the end of every MI's half time show. Some old habits
thankfully die hard in this world.

I was at the football and both basketball games last week, and I can tell you that the Chief “yell” is also still very prominent and prevalent at halftime of the Illini Basketball games in the Assembly Hall/SFC, all of which were VICTORIES!

I think people underestimate the amount of control Athletics has over the MI, especially for a Veteran's Day show like this. If athletics felt the fire extinguisher residue would put players at risk, they just wouldn't allow it. It's far from the first time MI has done it (3rd time since COVID they've done it), and countless bands across the country have done it numerous times themselves.

I understand the concern, but if athletic departments across the country, be it our own or even Ohio State, aren't concerned about it, I think it's worth chilling out over.

The strong rebel yell for the Chief at these events hopefully is felt good and strong in the craw of the UI Admin butt holes that were responsible for getting rid of the physical presence of the Chief, but NOT the spirit. May it continue forever.

Back when I was in the MI, all we did were "picture" formations. We were called old fashioned because a lot of the other bands were switching to drill shows. Had to laugh when the OSU band got so much publicity for their picture shows a few years ago.
