Kenpom today shows Illini up to #9, with Purdue at 6, and Michigan at 1. Mich State at 12, Indiana at 21, Wisconsin at 26 and Iowa at 27. Nebraska is at #42, no doubt due to SOS. I might suggest that Illinois is a tiny bit overrated, and MSU a tiny bit underrated; I saw them play Duke and they are athletic and physical, with a suffocating defense. So is Duke.
Also agree with your positive points - but MSU struggles scoring in the Half court since they aren't good 3 point shooter

It's weird that Kenpom and Torvik seem to prefer Ohio State slightly over Nebraska, but NET heavily favors Nebraska, which I actually agree with because in my opinion Nebraska is the far scarier team and where I felt there was next to zero chance we'd lose to Ohio State, Nebraska poses a decent challenge. But maybe they'll look awful tonight against Wisconsin and that'll change my mind.

The algorithm for NET is not publicly known, but they've said key components include a team value index that rewards beating quality opponents (especially on the road or at a neutral site) as well as something they call adjusted net efficiency which is said to be a team's offensive & defensive efficiency per possession, adjusted by game location and opponent strength.

Since NET relies so heavily upon results versus opponents and how those opponents are graded, it fluctuates very wildly up until January or thereabouts. We just saw Texas Tech basically trade places with an LSU team that was ranked 25 or so spots ahead of them after a single game. NET is just not useful at all right now. They may as well not even release it until maybe a month into conference play (just my opinion).

What I have noticed is that NET rewards undefeated teams in the most ridiculous fashion - hence LSU being ranked 13th or whatever they were while playing a schedule of absolute nobodies - and explains why Nebraska is currently so high in the NET. They did beat Creighton at home by 20 but they haven't played anyone else (and I'm not convinced that this 5-4 Creighton team is any good anyway). Ohio State just lost a game so NET was bound to penalize them in a huge way due to this, and it did.

My personal opinion is that Ohio State is actually a pretty good team with a dynamic (future NBA) player that Nebraska just does not have on their roster. Ohio State was ranked 9th in the B1G preseason media poll, Nebraska 14th, and aside from the game vs Creighton I've not seen anything out of that team that would cause me to move them up too much... certainly ahead of #13 Maryland, but I can't place them ahead of USC or even Indiana right now.

Lmao Mrs. DB said the same. Certainly doesn't look much older than 15. Cannot emphasize enough how outstanding he has been.
Just curious what your thoughts are about how he’ll respond to being a bit higher on all other teams’ scouting reports? The secret’s out now and everyone will be paying more attention to his game and how to play against him. I don’t think he will see much of a dip in his production - he just seems that gifted, crafty and consistent, but curious what others that know this game better think…

I’m not sure the secret hasn’t already been out for awhile now. However, and I’m no expert, but doesn’t it stand to reason that if teams really focus more on him defensively and even double team him it opens up more opportunities for Andrej, Boswell and others?

They seem to have different guys step up each night and fill a role or seize opportunities. If they continue to play the way they are capable of I think this is a team that will be hard to game plan against.

I would expect all four of the bigs will get their time on him. Ben may have some success as I think he would respond best to the challenge.

By the way, can anyone tell me why JJ is out?
Concussion.

I said that last year and it was right. they still won the league by 3 games. they are an anomaly and will be in contention for big ten and final four despite how it looks from the outside. I learned my lesson last year

Good call-out on the NET. I see Florida being penalized for playing one of the toughest schedules when I would take them ten out of ten times against Nebraska.

My thinking with Nebraska is that they're a more balanced team than Ohio State, and I feel like we do better against teams that have "the guy" vs. teams that have more ways to attack, even if those ways aren't as individually impressive as another team's "the guy". Maybe it's because you're less likely to make scouting mistakes against a team with "the guy", and scouting mistakes have been bothering us this season?

Would losing by 9 be enough?

This is going to be another tough one. Nebraska has been playing hard against us in recent meetings.
Could not agree more, Dee. Watching them booger Wisky right now, they are talented and play hard. The team should consider this as big a challenge as playing TT at the Hall. But we should have enough incentive and all have played well lately except for Petro. Maybe he can turn the light on Sat., but if they all play hard and do what they have been coached to do, they should be able to pull out another ...victory Il li nois, var si ty.

This has the feels of a classic let down Underwood game.. Always feel like we have one every year that the opponent punches in the face AT home and we wilt a little or sometimes a lot. We must come out and be the punchers!

Illinois will take this. Nebraska will keep it close but Illinois will close this out and huskers will be happy with the moral victory. 85-72 Illinois
