Petro must really be in the dog house. I know he hasn't been great, but if there was ever a game he might match up defensively I'd think it would have been against Hoiberg. Giving Keaton or KB a few more breaks might have helped in the stretch.
You're right about the doghouse. I personally don't know that you can take Keaton off the floor. Keaton can play on/off ball and at least a half foot bigger

Best way to beat zone is ball movement. I personally wasn't sad to not seeing Petro pounding ball on floor that won't beat zone. And he's huge negative playing off the ball and worlds worse than Keaton/Bos as defender.

Team is just missing toughness and quality defenders. Even if I don't think we will (due to Brad like Jake/Ben as "spacers"), I'd like to see more of Lee.when we need stops.

Imagine saying or needing "Ben's in for defensive purposes" after last season. And it's not a slam on him....he's been far and away the best on ball defending big on this team this season. It's just the structure of the team as a hole that you have to be in the position of having to do or say that

I know message boards are gonna message board, but some of the things I’m reading here are crazy. It is early December and game 11. We have a LONG way to go.

Nebraska showed against Creighton and Wisconsin they are not just good but elite. We should never lose at home, but these things happen when you play elite teams. Clearly there is still MAJOR problems with defense. Not sure if it’s scheme or just general communication, but it has to get better. I’m sure Brad will get it fixed before we get to the new year.
Creighton is 75 Kenpom and 5-5. Just behnd McNeese State. Wisconsin is decent at 37, but not that great. Is Nebraska good? Yes. Elite? Please.

I’m going with what I’m sure will be a rare glass half full take.

I’ve said it before, but borrowing from Hawk Harrelson it’s not necessarily who you play it’s when you play them. There might not be a hotter team in the country right now than Nebraska. They got an out of body experience from Sanfort in the first half, were the beneficiary of a couple of questionable calls (Z’s T, phantom foul on Tomi at the end), and still needed a contested 25 footer off of a dribble at the buzzer to beat us.

We could have played with more energy especially to start each half. But we could have folded our tents several times and continued to fight back to make them make an incredible shot to beat us.

This one stings but we just lost to an uber hot top 25 team that played their A+ game. Overall Nebraska played a little bit better but I actually liked our fight.

Some fan base. Pissin and moaning how horrible we played. Complaining about Brad. Nebraska is for real. A good game between two good teams . They shot well. They had an answer every time we got close . We fought back came up just short. Big ten is gonna be fun to watch this year., Tourney should be awesome. Appreciate what we have.

I thought it was Hamer's fault?
Some of it still is but it's ultimately underwood has bad defensive culture. The defensive principals carried by his program aren't aligned with national contenders. Wagler had no business closing down on sam hoiberg like that and I can't be mad at him because I see other better defenders on the team make poor defensive decisions.

Remember when Nebraska won, Iowa failed to score on its last possession and we backed into a share of the B1G championship. This was the payment for that favor.

We came out in the second half and let them get into rhythm. A classic case of FAFO.

The decision to play that weird match up zone for a 5 min stretch was dumb. They scored easy points on almost every possession. As soon as we went back to man we got stops.
I disagree that zone got a few stops actually the man defense is putrid. They cant stay in front of nobody the Hoiberg kid schooled every guard on the team today. He did whatever he wanted when he wanted got to every spot to run they offense.

Right, it's fair to ask how many better games Nebraska has played in their program's history. Not that the Illinois deserved that one, but this game does not make this season look like a disaster.

The Illini play for long stretches with the attitude of don't worry, there's plenty of time to get back in the game and put this team with lesser talent away. Until, we run out of margin for error and lose. That style will get us killed against Purdue, MSU, and especially Michigan. Brad and staff have to somehow imbue this team with some consistent toughness, tenacity, and sense of urgency The raw talent is there, the fight too often is not.

I'd like to take a moment to expression frustrated I am with the officiating in the Big Ten again. No, it did not lose this game for the Illini they did that themselves. But on both ends it was atrocious. The amount of times I thought to myself "wow we got bailed out there" on drives where an Illinois player just lost the ball. The Z tech? The foul on Tomi at the end of the game? The foul on Jake while the ball was rolling on the ground and both players dove simultaneously for it? Buyukten however you spell it being able to call a timeout while sitting in the lap of his own assistant coach? It's absurd. Once again, I'm not blaming the refs for losing this game for the Illini but I'm so tired of watching high level college basketball games be slowed down and influenced on both ends by poor officiating. It's gotten so bad in the last three seasons.

Define "great"
"Great" must mean that when a guy is hot you give him plenty of room and hope he cools off.
It ticks me off, because that is the man I always wanted to guard and I would rudely just say, "I've got him". Then I stayed in his shirt. The rest of the team could guard the other 4 guys. Don't we have anyone like that?

I will also say one thing, despite the fact that the Huskers were better than us today, they did get some amazing calls on the road that I have never seen the Illini get!! The technical foul on Z, the phantom foul on Tomi down the stretch. Don't get me wrong, I am not making any excuses, but just saying we never get those calls on the road in the Big Ten, period!
We don't even get those calls at home.

OK. I need to relax. I need to just watch for entertainment, not with any real emotional investment. Same sh!#.different year.

Be satisfied with a 6 seed and round of 32. Again.
This is where I’m at right now, we’ll win some big games and end up a 4-6 seed but it’s the same overall story. We are the Pittsburgh Steelers now.

Unless we have a hero like TSJ or Ayo that’s where it ends.

I will say this, as “great” as hoiberg is proclaimed, look at how many tourneys they’ve made in 6 years with him (this is his program at this point). There’s more to the program building then just the in game.

For gosh sakes

Nebraska has gone from a double digit underdog three hours ago to now ‘top 15’ and ‘elite’. And some delusional deflectors above blaming the fanbase, and being louder in neutral games.

How about putting the blame where it belongs?

I am not saying we stink overall, or the season is a failure, or anything like that. But this game was awful and all too reminiscent of many past games.

There are a lot of people on this board that are either really ignorant about basketball or can’t think clearly after a loss. Shouldn’t have lost this game. Had too many minutes of poor play. But calling this team “mediocre” or “should not anywhere close to ranked” are so over the top it’s ridiculous. I’m embarrassed for the people saying things like that.

Teams will lose at home and still contend for the title. Purdue lost by something like 30 points in Mackey last week.
