Gates in the postgame interview: “Do I think we're a good team? Yeah, I think we're a good team but Illinois hasn't gone through the things we've gone through this year as it relates to practices and who's in and who's out and trying to get a unit out there."

Uh…. 🤔🤨
That's the same coach that schedules a SOS in the 250 range because the SEC is "so tough" LOL

9 days of full squad practices.
It looked like to me that our bigs were much more aware of people driving to the basket. We didn't give up nearly as many layups or uncontested drives to the basket as we have been. Everybody was doing a better job of stepping out and moving over and gaurding drives to the rim.

This is by far the best all-around game the Illini have played but it was against a far inferior team in Mizzou. They are pathetic at best. Still some good play by big Z, Mirk, Tommy and continued great play by Keaton and Stok. The biggest surprise to me was that the Illini did play with some energy and for the first time played good defense. The big question is, was this a one-off game or can they build on it and play good basketball from start to finish.

Duke last year? We had people feeling this way last weekend over a buzzer beating loss to Nebraska, a top 15 team. For some/many of our posters, keep the stones in your pocket. You know who you are.

842 posts after a loss and 194 posts after a win versus a rival. Most Mizzou fans are a clown show, but some of ours are in the same circus.

Think Mizzou is not an NIT team, Big Conference NIT teams are typically bubble NCAA teams....this team is not.

Best thing I saw from Illinois today defensively was collapsing to their big (Mitchell). Allowed Mirk to body him and Z to come in for the block. Also saw better rotations and close outs to cover their shooters. Illinois also defining their roles for better teamwork. Kylan Boswell deferring but going at the basket when needed.

One of my biggest concern is ball handling, especially against athletic and long teams. Keaton will be a strong ball handler but he still worries me a bit. Certain line-ups will be more prone to being picked up full court and high in the half court. In the NCAA, we have had some trick defenses in the BU era that we haven't done well (Loyola, Iowa State, ). Andrej and Kylan are good ball handlers, but having MIrk bring it up is what the other team will want.

Fair to point out that that was without TJ for however many games.

But do you remember the stretch he was out?

We beat Northwestern by 30, beat Michigan St and then went on the road and beat Michigan by 15... I think we lost to #1 Purdue by 5 and there may have been another buy game in there where we murdered that team as well... unsure analytics were hurt during that stretch much (would like to see what the adjEff was just for those games)

One note: TSJ played in the Mizzou game that year. It was after that game he was suspended. But otherwise, your point stands.

Edit: did you edit your post? I could’ve sworn you included Mizzou in your list of games TSJ didn’t suit up for. 😵‍💫

I forget when it started. I know it involved the photo of a Mizzou fan holding the ZOU portion of their MIZ ZOU sign upside down but last night was the MIZ NOZZIEST of all MIZ NOZ moments. We played very good but how that team is picked 7th in the SEC is mind numbing to me. That team that played last night wouldn't finish 7th in the MAC.

Was it just me or did the post-game handshake between gates and BU seem a little cold. I mean I don't expect hugs and kisses but...

Believe it was FDU we beat by 40.. Justin Harmon went nuclear if my memory serves me right.

I don't want this to come across as negative following a 43 point drubbing but Brad has got to figure out how to play Petrovic and in a game Boswell only played 22 minutes it seems criminal Petrovic played 2 minutes.

I don't really understand what Petrovic has done to deserve being in the doghouse and they simply won't beat good teams playing Davis and Humrichous at the same time.
I sort of agree. Worried about what's the deal w Petrovic.

We also had the clunker to Maryland at home while TSJ was out. Hard not to think about how the season may have been different if he hadn’t missed those 6 games. Maybe we knock off Purdue at Mackey, maybe we don’t drop that game to Maryland with him, and we end up a 2 seed and not in the same bracket as UConn, and get to a Final Four.

Couple notes:

(1) I can't believe the "SEC is the best conference in America and we assume this by default" talking point has migrated to basketball now. We'll just see about that

(2) Every year, usually in early January, we have a game where we just execute something horribly for 40 minutes, Underwood yells a lot, we get all depressed and then they come out the next game with a fire under their...uh...wood. Did that happen already re: defense? Because if so, we're in GREAT shape...

(3) Was mildly annoying to see Mizzou re-enact Nebraska's final possession where we stuck to them like velcro but they splashed a contested three at the buzzer anyway

(4) Man that second half was a beatdown of epic proportions. I love that they pushed it out to 90+ without even pushing the tempo

(5) If Petrovic ever gets good enough at defense..................
