Well, I hope you enjoyed those Petro minutes because the B1G season isn't gonna have much for him I'm afraid.

Wagler deciding to be the B1G FOY Lottery pick with a dash of best 6'6" PG that can play a turnover and foul free 39 mpg left Petro out in the cold.
Nobody saw that coming.
It wouldn't matter if Wagler happened to be just a slightly above average frosh. Petro has demonstrated he just isn't cut out for the level of basketball our team is aspiring to play. He doesn't have the mentality or the energy required. If Wagler weren't as amazing as he is, Lee would earn minutes before Petro. Mihailo's casual turnover followed by the loafing back on D in the first half pretty much cemented it for me, and judging by Brad's quick yank after that play, I think that pretty much did it for our coaching staff as well. I wish Petro nothing but the best from here, but I don't think we're going to see much more of him playing any meaningful minutes as an Illini.

Petro is not a rotation player, physically overwhelmed. Possibly due to injury, but he is to slow on defense and struggles to make space with the dribble. His dribble as mentioned is very loose and borders on a carry. His fundamentals not great for college ball (jump passesl.

@illini0440 Regarding NIL for someone like Wagler…do coaches (football/basketball) adjust NIL if a player breaks out like this? Like, I kind of assume he wasn’t getting a ton just based on recruiting rankings…but based on where he is now do they find ways to increase the NIL he’s getting? What’s the standard for something like this?
I don't think our teams in general do this, but some in college football have tried. Keaton is looking at a huge NBA payday, he and family seem to be very grateful for the opportunity gained at Illinois. Just like the rest of us, thought he could possibly break into rotation.

No. But businesses are free to use their breakouts as a chance to use them for ads and other stuff which would pay them.

KW is doing radio commercials so I am guessing that is a way for him to make some $?

Anyway you look at it after today, I would give Lee all the extra minutes at guard that don’t go to Boz, Wag and Andrje? I just don’t see Petro being any factor not only here but really anywhere in college? His game is way too loose for this level of basketball IMHO? He really can’t play much defense and those two traits don’t spell many minutes?

This. I assume there is a difference between stipends from the school and NIL, which consists of payments from, for lack of a better term, private sponsors. The school, or someone on behalf of the school, may coordinate and act as a clearing house for NIL payments, and may pay an athlete for the use of the athlete’s name for school promotional purposes, but if a business wants to pay an athlete for endorsements that is between the athlete and the business and would be a contract that can be entered into at any time. Wagler is probably a great example of someone who can make a lot of money off his current production and profile. It is one of the reasons that the NCAA or schools are not going to be able to control NIL payments, as they are agreements between the athlete and someone not under the control of the school or an organization such as the NCAA.

The way certain people act generally makes me question whether they're truly fans of our team... or fans of rival schools that create an account just to throw blasphemy on the board.
They likely are "fans," but just love to spread negativity whenever they get the opportunity. They come out as a mob after we lose.

That post is just getting the attention it is due to coming after winning back to back games by a combined 88 points (which adds to the absurdity).

And this leaves a huge gap in our lineup going forward.

KW and KB cannot miss time and better be ready for the 35+ minutes a game from here on out.

I don’t think the gap is very large based on Petro’s minutes so far this year. Guard play has not been an issue at all. Would it be better if he was a useable sub? Hell yes, but so far he’s not very playable . . .

78 points.

But point still stands.

They wouldn’t adjust anything. A contract is a contract.

I will always root for and appreciate anyone who chooses to play for us, but I completely agree. He looks totally out of control but without any of the Curbelo-like PG magic to offset the poor decisions. He seems like way too much of a project for meaningful minutes through the rest of the season. Hopefully he’ll stick around and try to develop his skill set.

I’d say that’s an accurate takeaway. I don’t get the Monday afternoon stuff. That should be of little consequence to a locked in team.
Odd time for a game. Crowd bleh. Etc. They are human beings. No one is 100% locked in 100% of the time. Besides I’d say they were pretty locked in.

How is it a huge gap? You have two guys that are proven as primary ball handlers. We’ve shown we can play with one out of the game.
I think it just means Jake gets more minutes at a so called guard position? Both KB and KW can play point, we are fine even if we need a little Lee just for toughness? I think today showed Petro just is not ready at this point? He won’t be getting much time going forward I would think?

Don’t pretend like KB doesn’t have his moments. We need a spark now that KW is the primary handler.

Just means the hope of spelling KB and KW just went off the table.
