I can't wait to see all of the players falling down travelling calls for the rest of the year.

Yep. And you just know that in our next game Northwestern will do a hook and hold and it won’t be egregious at all and the refs won’t call it. They’ll review it and it’ll be marginally worse than what Keaton did but they won’t call it. You just know that that’s going to happen.

At one point, one of the announcers said something to the effect that Ty was, and I paraphrase, "Ramping up his workouts but wasn't ready to play in games yet." Do we have any new information on his progress and possible timeline on when he can play? Ironically, his skillset from 2 years ago, doesn't seem as much needed since we've ramped up our defense but if he now can hit a third of his 3 point attempts and has the same explosiveness and rebounding and defensive tenacity, one can always find some time for a player with those characteristics. I do wonder about any disruptions that could cause to our current excellent team chemistry.
Defending against your middle-of-the-road teams is one thing. When we were up against Nebraska who are clearly a conference title contender, they absolutely shredded us. Alabama and UCONN did the same. We have yet to demonstrate that we can ramp up our defense against one of the conference title contenders...teams that come with us with both skill and athleticism. We could absolutely use Ty's defense, particularly if he's developed a serviceable outside shot.

Nebraska was bad, but if we are talking in totality -- the defense has clearly upgraded from a year ago. Last year we finished 40th. Right now we're 16th.

And we've already played teams TTU, BAMA, UCONN, OSU, NEBRASKA, TENNESSEE, etc.
Hate to bring bad news but..

Last season at this time we were 4th on Torvik with a top 5 defense…

Even without seeing the statistics our defense passes the eye test compared to what we were doing earlier. Since the Nebraska game our defense is better than any time in the last two seasons. Our schemes are better, we are hedging on the pnrs and contesting shots at the rim. I have been waiting for this for two years. Mirk was great at holding up the ballhandler when his man was doing the screening and able to recover in a way that didn't hurt us. Not giving up nearly as many uncontested drives to the basket.

Which team have we played that will be contending for our conference championship since the Nebraska game? The best competition we've seen since then is Iowa, and their resume is far from convincing at the moment.

It's not really bad news unless we expect to experience our best player & PG getting a hand/wrist injury that effects their jump shot the rest of the season + the entire team going down with mononucleosis again

This time last year we already had losses to Northwestern (17-16 record) and USC (17-18 record)

I think this team is different... being rated this highly on KP/Torvik/NET/etc is never 'bad news'

I was listening on the radio and have only seen a small clip, but I believe the initial call was against Iowa. If Wagler did commit the foul, and they saw that on the replay, I think the only way to change the call was to make it a flagrant. Calling a common foul on Wagler was not possible at that point. So the refs chose the call that didn't basically hand the game to Illinois. I can understand the thinking, as the choice was either giving Illinois 2 foul shots they didn't deserve, or giving Iowa two foul shots they didn't deserve (as I think that only the 6th foul on Illinois, so they would have just got to retain possession). No good choice for the refs at that point.
But I could be wrong.
That is correct, only way to switch the call against Iowa to Illinois was by calling it flagrant. Otherwise, they have to stay with the original call. The refs need another option in those situations, a flagrant foul call on that play is ridiculous

I choose to believe this.

Has BU ever addressed what happened to Zorro Ivisic? I assume a broken nose, but I don’t watch all of the in between game interviews so maybe he mentioned what happened?

Unconscionable that Capt. Boswell has not promoted Wagler to PFC yet...
I’m not up on military rank, but whatever the top title for enlisted people is, the Captain needs to confer that rank to Pvt Wagler.

Army, Marines: Sergeant Major
Navy: Master Chief Petty Officer

There are higher ranking enlisted positions by appointment, e.g. Sergeant Major of the Marines (Army) which is a single individual.

Note: we pass the eye test this year & this groups chemistry, competitiveness, unselfish play and hustle jump through the screen. I don’t think we could say that all the time last season, even with the injuries and sickness… just wanted to put things in perspective… let’s keep it rolling.

What was our best wins at this time last year? A middling Arkansas and Oregon was the big one, and they obviously dropped off.

That said, I understand we have higher hopes than last year as we should . But even last year, despite KJ getting injured, Tomi sickness, Morez injury it was a team that was a 6th seed

We want better. But we talk about last year like it was the biggest trainwreck the program has ever seen haha.

I was looking back at the hook and hold on Wagler has to be one of the worst calls ever made. That was just a crazy “appeal” what ever the he!! that is? The Big needs to look at this, that would have really changed that game. But… as usual those refs will be given a raise and an at a boy for hosing the road team.

It was really just a ridiculous call?

I’ve gone pretty much exclusively to listening to the radio broadcasts. The Varsity app is so easy to sync up with the TV broadcast. Barnhart is a pro, and he knows the players and coaches, and always has interesting insight and anecdotes. Plus, Deon Thomas or occasionally, like on Saturday, Doug Altenberger is the color guy. They both do a nice job. They offer good analysis but don’t overstep, plus they’re huge fans.

There was a funny conversation during a timeout in Saturday’s game after Big Z hit the back-to-back threes in the second half. Barnhart asked Altenberger what his old coach, Lou Henson would think of a seven-footer shooting threes? Altenberger responded kind of dryly ‘Yeah, that wouldn’t happen’ he said something to the effect of, if you did shoot it, you better make it because it may be the last time you see the floor for a while. It was a neat commentary on how the game has changed but with a popular former player and the reference to Henson, it’s something you only get with the hometown broadcast.
The radio broadcasts has been my only source of audio on all Illini games for the last 7-8 years now and I love Brian , Deon and Doug's enthusiasm for the beloved....I truly feel like I am at the game listening to their elite announcing.....I really really do............

Yes, but that team has multiple lights out shooting nights we never saw again. Much higher peaks, much lower valleys. They were also injured and sick a lot after this point in the season as well.

This team has been much more consistent game in and game out. After Nebraska you could have convinced me we were a team that needed to out-offense teams to win, but we've rounded into a team playing with intent on offense and intensity on defense. Barring illnesses or injuries, we are primed for a great season.
