If Nate doesn’t get a head coaching job, I’ll throw another OC idea out there-Detroit.

They need a new OC after John Morton was fired. Dan Campbell does not want to call plays. Nate there would be a great situation for him.

I’d hate it as a Packers fan, but would love to see that as an Illini fan.

As a Lions fan and U of I alumni, this is my Venn diagram win.

I think Nate is awesome, and I want him to be a NFL head coach soon.

However, the league is littered with offensive-focused head coaches who didn’t have play calling responsibilities and flamed out. Matt Nagy is but one example. I’d really like to see Scheelhaase go somewhere that he’s calling plays under a head coach. If (and probably when) he nails that, then he has checked all the boxes to lead his own team.

I’ve already mentioned Detroit, and I’m sure there will be some places where the head coach has a defensive background. Bottom line is I want to see Nate be set up to have every chance to be successful.

I had not heard about us interviewing Freeman in 2020. But I have a hard time seeing him doing as well here as Bret has done. We needed a guy to not only right the ship , but turn it around. Two tasks that I dont think Freeman was up to at that time
It's obviously impossible to say, but Freeman at the time was known for being an ace recruiter and is by all accounts a very decent human being.

IL is a unique challenge, but I haven't seen anything from Freeman that makes me think he couldn't have succeeded here.

Id like to see us get a legit OLB coach. Feels like that position has underperformed for a while. McDaniel as well. The linebackers have not been good enough. Parker who i like needs to show a little more than a good interview. Our DBs looked lost at points last season
We have 3, one being Bret. Parker is a very sought after coach by other big programs......

Agree - Freeman would likely have been very successful here, especially given that he would have inherited a decent amount of talent

Based on my extensive knowledge - which is based exclusively on information obtained from insiders and non-insiders on this board - I'm putting the +/- at 1.5 for additional assistant coach staffing changes. I think Discher is the person BB is giving an opportunity to find other opportunities, and there's always a possibility that someone unexpected leaves.

@illini0440 or other insiders - Please share anything you can and if you can't share much I understand, but I'd love an over or under prediction based on my line.

That’s not including Thad leaving right?

nope - I'm putting the +/- at 1.5 for additional assistant coach staffing changes.

My wording rules out changed at OC or DC, but realistically Lunney is not going anywhere this offseason, and it appears AHen is going to get at least one more season to develop and prove he can be a P4 DC.

At this point, it does seem like the under... but this is a big week, you'll know soon after convention is over
did the convention wrap up earlier this week? Online articles are saying 1/11-1/13. Obviously, it takes time for things to shake out even after it wraps up. Any idea on timeline for when we might start hearing announcements?

Why should our head coach be OLB, DC and Head Coach? Doesn't make any sense to have that many duties. Hire qualified coaches and lets get things off his plate.

Whether or not other programs are trying to steal a coach says a lot about how the rest of college football views said coach. It has been said that Parker and Jamison are highly sought after. Are there honestly any programs trying to steal Henry to run their defense? Harris or Panos to coach edge rushers? I love Henry the position coach but Henry the DC doesn't feel like the best Bret can do with that position. The ideal change would be a demotion for Henry to DB Coach / Pass Game Coordinator and bringing in an experienced/proven DC.
