I hate playing this game, but Gonzaga outperformed us so far against common opponents. They beat Maryland by 39 and beat Alabama by 10.

They're missing one of their two best players right now - I don't really think it's fair to drop them while playing without him as long as they continue to win.
your fact based argument is really putting a damper in my hate based argument against Gonzaga. plus I think we would beat them handily. also in the end we will have a much better resume and metrics so not too worried

On the contrary, the fact that the team isn't as good as they were earlier should reflect in the current polls. When the player comes back and they look better as a team, then you raise them back up in the polls.

So you believe the AP poll should be more like a current "power rankings"?

I don't think it should be, so agree to disagree.

It’s BARELY more hypothetical than comparing common opponents than to wonder how Illinois would have performed vs. San Francisco, lol. Just as Iowa State’s Purdue win loses more of its shine with time, so do our losses from November. Right now, I think it’s obvious Illinois is playing like a much better team and vs. much tougher competition.
Gonzaga beat KP #120 on the road by 21 without their 2nd best player.

We beat KP #126 at home by 19 without Boswell.

Both of these results happened in the last 10 days.

I get that they struggled with KP #101 San Francisco this weekend but it's not so egregious that college basketball writers HAVE to drop them below Illinois.

Do I think we're the better team? Sure. But that's not how the AP Poll works and we all know that so it's just silly getting all up in arms over it.

Not trying to get all up in arms. Just stating, knowing how the AP Poll works, that we’ve done enough over the past month compared to Gonzaga that it’s reasonable for our Purdue win to be the final straw that allows us to jump them.

"It will be a JOKE if we don't pass Gonzaga."

I mean, I guess that phrasing is up for interpretation but it sure seems closer to "up in arms" than "just stating knowing how the AP Poll works..."

Anyway, moving on. I've seen multiple polls (Field of 68, Fox/Casey Jacobsen) that had us at 11 and 10. I assume some pollsters will give us a big jump so I think we end up somewhere 7-9.

I don't mean to be rude, but this is flawed logic. Gonzaga, as typical, has played 4 quad 1 games, Illinois has played 9. Gonzaga just barely beat USF at home. USF is 0-3 Q1, 2-3 Q2, 4-2 Q3, and has a Q4 L. Gonzaga certainly can not be advanced from #9. I would argue that they can not be ranked ahead of Purdue and Houston either.

I don't believe you. I think you just like posting this.

Regardless of where we end up in the final poll, the natural order has been restored as Scott Richey has placed us back at #6 on his poll, ahead of Gonzaga, ISU, MSU, Purdue and Houston. Thank you Scott #famILLy

I both think it will be a JOKE if it happens and will not let it affect my day or week at all, lol.

As typical? Might want to go back and check the number of Q1 games for them over the last 5 seasons and compare it to Illinois. (Hint: it's A LOT closer than you think)

Apparently, a lot of voters disagree with you as Gonzaga moved up 2 spots to 6.
