None of these things are big surprises, the staff actually talks and Bret isn’t sitting in his office getting blindsided by things.

There is a plan in place. Will the plan yield better defensive results this year is the question. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Winning 10 and 9 games wasn’t a fluke, and the goal is to do better than that, we are on the upswing here, enjoy the ride!

Well I called the Jamo thing a while ago given the DL recruiting issues. I'm not sure if this was a long time in the making or I just got lucky. I guess Jamo showed up in Key West assuming he was leaving but not 100% sure?? Plus a trip to Key West, why not go, I've been quite a few times and have stood right where the recruiting pic was taken. Key West isn't a big place but is a lot fun especially in January. I wouldn't pass up an expense paid trip to Key West.

I do hope this was a while in the making as it clarifies a few issues. Next year may be tougher than planned for the DL but I don't think it will be longer than a 1 year issue.

Not a surprise after Bielema comments and lack of DL recruiting …
Not a surprise after other pieces of information that were themselves surprising, lol.

I think it's very clear in retrospect that this roster and staff really embraced the opportunity we had to bring such a good team and positive internal environment back from 2024 to 2025, and we converted it into the first back-to-back 9 win seasons in the history of the program. We've got so much to thank all of these guys for.

And now we step into the next challenge.

Waiting on waivers … And could add in the spring if needed …
There is no more spring transfer portal

BU can turn Marcus Domask into a point guard, but BB can't turn Matthew Bailey into a defensive tackle. There's not an untapped pool of football talent in Europe.

We're in a lot of trouble along the defensive front, there's no sugar coating it. Rabbits need to get pulled from hats somehow.

There is no portal but players can still transfer when they want to. The portal just allows coaches to speak to players.

Bret has earned the trust of the fanbase like no other Illini football coach in a long long long time. No reason to doubt he knows what he is doing until actual events prove otherwise.

This is a blow to lose Terrance but I can understand if this change is related to a scheme shift.

As others have mentioned, it’s hard to ignore recruiting as part of this shift. The defensive line recruiting has been mixed at best—high school evaluations have generally been solid, but the transfer portal results have fallen short. That said, it’s also important to acknowledge that defensive line performance under Jamison has been significantly better than what we saw for much of the previous two decades.

The real failure this offseason has been the portal. Jamison is undoubtedly involved in those decisions, but the prevailing read is that the staff didn’t believe some of the outgoing players were worth the prices they were offered elsewhere. At the same time, the staff either wasn’t willing to meet the asking price for potential transfer additions or couldn’t sell Illinois as the most attractive landing spot. The concern there should be whether the GM side of the house misread the cost for line adds (I have thoughts here but I'll save those for when the portal changes are finalized).

That would be what a fool believes…..

I’ll see myself out now. Be sure to tip your wait staff!

I get the reasoning for this change, and I know it says grad transfers must wait, but this I don't know how they can stop a graduate student from transferring in May.
they really have no basis for eliminating any transfers for anyone in April, May or June

They're free to transfer whenever they like, they just have to sit out a year like the old days if it's not during the portal period.

But honestly, I'm out of the business of predicting what the rules are going to be five minutes from now.

Google AI Overview, so take it for what’s it worth:

It looks like grad transfers can transfer anytime. Technically, any player can withdraw from their school and enroll at a new school anytime, but the coaches are not allowed to contact that player first wink wink.

In the considerations section, though, it says that players should do not enter during the portal may need a waiver to compete. Not sure how accurate that is.

There’s not an official spring transfer portal but there are other avenues that will allow us to add in the spring if we choose to do so …

Always one step ahead …

Not saying I’m down with the possible choice, just saying it’s a possibility from the NE side.

Seattle side would be either Scott or Partridge.
Wasn’t Partridge involved in the Michigan debacle

We’re switching the type DL and number of DL on the field in the new scheme. I think this just Jim wanting Jameson as his DL coach.
So we’re going to have less DL on the field?

So since I’m probably 3 or 4 steps behind. How many coaching additions will there be?
DC, DL, ST, S, TE

Pardon if I am being slow, I'm trying to understand which is the cart and which is the horse here. Did our DL recruiting fall short because our DL coach knew he was leaving, or did our DL coach leave because he struck out in recruiting?

I get there are larger nuances like Bret changing the overall defense, and the chance to coach in the NFL. But I'd hate to think we are where we are because Jamo had a taste for Buffalo wings and stopped trying.
