I agree that neither his corniness nor the sad state of our home court (dis)advantage is entirely his fault, but unless he is expecting approximately half of the fans in attendance to spontaneously self-assign the responsibility to pick up the slack for the second (and any subsequent) I L L, it's not much of a chant to just periodically throw out an I L L over the PA system.

My main objection to him and by extension, the entire audiory experience, is that it might as well just be an intern (or an AI) with a soundboard. It's generic dreck, coincidentally, not unlike most professional sporting events...

There's no vibe, no personality, and no energy in our crowds. We used to have all that in spades. Whoever is in charge of the noise, band, PA announcer, timeout gimmicks, etc. at the Assembly Hall is just as much to blame for this as the mediocre remodeling job.

The War Chant was the core song to get the crowd revved up. After they dumped that, there’s nothing else uniquely Illinois that can fire up the crowd.

Strongly disagree. It was still around when I was a multi-year season ticket holder and the war chant would quiet the crowd. It’s slow. And when it was over it was quieter than before. It could take a crowd that was roaring with excitement going into a time out and quiet them down. Other things like William Tell or Blues Brothers were far more effective.

Hopefully AS and KB both back, and we annihilate them.
I'd much rather them be safe with Bos and win by only 15 than annihilating them and risking losing him for the season. Going off of that, my prediction is somewhere around 84-69 :illinois:

If I'm Ty's agent there is a zero% chance I advise him to play this year. He's a really good college basketball player, but w/o a reliable jump shot, not much of an NBA prospect. He also doesn't really fit well with how we play. He'd be more of a gadget guy in certain situations/matchups. He certainly would have come in handy last night, but when fully healthy, I'm not sure he would bump Ben from his role because of how well Ben stretches the defense, and the continuity already established. How much PT is left?
I know you are right, but Ty won’t make much next year coming off two years of not playing - the chance to win a NC might be enough to entice him to play plus he’ll make a lot more next year if he does contribute to winning.

While you are right - Ty doesn’t have a natural role for us, but if he’s willing to play an10-15 min role and play more depending on matchups- I think he’s critical when we get to the tourny. Someone to guard these long athletic players we’ll face in the elite 8/FF he would be invaluable to have for defense- Yaxel, Peterson Dybansa, Boozer, etc we don’t have an answer for and he would be the best we have. He might make the difference between being an elite 8 team vs FF or NC team.

Whether he is good at his job or getting paid is irrelavent. What they are having him do isn't working. I don't blame him. I blame the people telling him what to do.

The point is, other college venues don't need the PA announcer to rally the troops. That's what pep bands and cheerleaders are supposed to do. If Breslin and Mackey can be a madhouse without the schtick, we should be able to, also. We're a Top 10 team.

I found it the opposite. The War Chant combined with the Chief dance along with the crowd clapping in unison fired up the crowd.

Do you want a Ty Rodgers at anything less than 100%?

His value is as tied into his explosive athleticism as anyone on this team. BenHum can play at 70% and if he makes 4 out of 6 threes we'll take it.

Ty, even if his shot his much better than 2 years ago...Likely will still be well under league average % wise. We'd lose the spacing that has made this offense dangerous...

I just don't get why it would make sense to try and bring him back late in the season when he hasn't played in-game in 2 years and looks like the odd man out fit-wise.

He would have looked good guarding Blackwell and Fears

If Rodgers doesn’t play this year, will he still have 2 more eligibility years or just 1 year.

Does the NCAA allow 1 redshirt and 1 medical redshirt?

Are we talking about the same person here? There's Tim Sinclair, who sits at the scorer's table and as many have mentioned is a very professional announcer who also does the Bulls and other teams. He does do the "ILL" after a visitor turnover - I like that personally and people respond ok on it. Other than that, he pretty much just announces players coming in and out of the game.

Then there's the new hype guy they have added this year - he carries a portable mic around and has a lot of energy that is generally not matched by the crowd. He tries really hard to get the crowd going before each half and sometimes at timeouts, but it can be cringy.
The roaming hype guy has to go, worst idea ever!

I hate to say it but I feel Indiana will beat us on Sunday because the Illini have failed time and again to prove they can defend the 3's. The other thing is in 3 games losses this year the free throw shooting has been horrible [under 60%] then Keaton is getting tired and must have some help. Indiana 87-Illini 80

I think the jury is out on Ty’s shooting. I have always believed BU asked him to lots of things including NOT shoot 3’s. And he is a GREAT team member that does what he asked. NOT saying he can/will light it up. But evidence isn’t there that he is a poor shooter in games. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/stats/_/id/5105792/ty-rodgers

Everyone remember that game against Purdue where they put Edey on Rodgers and destroyed his confidence? They did that because they had so little respect for his jump shot

He is a career 52.3% (50-96) free throw shooter.

Big question for me is how much his athleticism (which helped fuel his defense and rebounding) will be impacted by the injury. Per AI, ~25% of NBA players with operative patellar tendon tears do not return to the league at all and others (e.g., Jeremy Lin, Victor Oladipo) have had significantly diminished productivity after returning. Seems like he is on a good path so far so hope for the best.

Even if fully recovered, it would be tough to unsee this year's offensive efficiency and how potent having five true shooting threats on the floor can be. Think Ty could play a role in the rotation of a championship level team, but most likely for his defensive stopper capabilities and energy in a support role unless he has somehow truly transformed his shooting and become a true two-way player. Not expecting that, but hoping for the best for him.
