In ‘89 the Illini were undefeated in the game they won against Georgia Tech and Gill was injured in. They reached #1 that next week and went on to lose 3 of their next 4 games while Gill was out with injury. What difference does it make? The 1989 team got better without Kendall Gill. And they beat the daylights out of Michigan in both regular season games. We litterally have 5 players (when healthy) that can step up and carry this team when need be without any jealousy. How often does that happen? We have 3 others that would start on any other team. We just have to keep improving.
Kylan really tampered the dribble drive, staggered screens that Purdue, Washington, Nebraska, MSU, Wisconsin and Indiana threw at us.
USC is going to run the dribble drive offense at us 75% of the time and we are going to get whistled for more fouls on Wednesday than we have all season (we're on the road). I am confident that the team and coaches are already aware of that. The key is how we handle it.
I think most Illini fans would acknowledge that team was fools gold. This year's team is light years ahead of that team.Interesting comparison/symmetry...hopefully a better sprint to the finish line!
This wasn’t the first time Illinois beat Indiana on Feb. 15 to get to 21-5. It also happened in 2009; this is the Illini’s best start since then. That team ended up losing five of its last eight games, culminating in a first-round upset against Western Kentucky in the Big Dance.
There are no guarantees, as Illini fans understand well. Maybe too well.

Illini freshmen (better than last year?), NCAA potential (better than 2024?) shine through in rout of Indiana
With Keaton Wagler, David Mirkovic and others cooking, the Hoosiers had no shot. Just how good are these Illini?chicago.suntimes.com
This is just my opinion and I’m sure as heck not a doctor, but I would not even THINK about having him play until he is as healthy as he can possibly be. If that isn’t until March, I don’t care.Clearly the staff and Fletch felt like his morning workout was good enough that he should at least travel. That’s a major positive given Brad’s comments. If they felt like he 100% could not play in either game, he would not travel.
That dude loves to block shots so much. It's a joy to watch. And gets his money's worth on seemingly every one too.
Leads the nation in total distance his blocks have landed away from where they were shot, I guarantee it.
Ace (showing my age) and other ticket scalpers have been gone for awhile. All mobile entry.Yeah…. That’s what I figured. Back in the day of paper tickets, I was quite adept at finding someone who just wanted to sell extra tickets for a reasonable price. But the new landscape is out of my wheelhouse.
Not even a doubt that Keaton and David are a better pair than Kaspar and Will....at least IMHO. Both started from day one and have been consistently strong all season.Interesting comparison/symmetry...hopefully a better sprint to the finish line!

Anyone would have to be blind not to see Boswell's affect on the defense or the overall intensity of the team. That's correct and you're missing the point. The 4 games we lost in '89 weren't to teams as good as Wisconsin and MSU are this year. We lost to mediorce teams in games that weren't all that close. - the '89 became a better team all around when Gill was out. Because they had to. This team is more talented by position than that team. This team can rely on one of 5 players to carry them if they need to. The '89 team could not. The '89 team finished third in the Big Ten and were by far the most athletic team in Illinois history.
If you couldn't see the difference on defense yesterday vs the games when Bam was out, perhaps take another look. We were getting beat off the dribble using a staggered sceen Andrej the on ball defender. First kudos to Andre for trying to fill that spot. Second, we are very much a team to be reckoned that is continuing to improve with when all 8 players healthy. As long as we get a top 12 seed, we have a chance to run to the final 8 and with the correct match up we can get to the final game.
At that point (when Kendall got hurt) they eactly 2 what we would call today Quad 1 wins - Michigan and Missouri. We had to go to double OT to beat Ga Tech (at home) and they barely made the tournament. My point is that Lou Henson doesn't get the recognition he deserves for that team. After Kendall got hurt he used several different starting line - ups and he integrated Marcus Liberty, Larry Smith and Earvin Small both on offense and defense. It was something they talked about on the radio constantly that year. And when those players had to contribute in the NCAA tourney (McNeese St, Ball St, Louisville - Battle was hurt, Syracuse - Lowell Hamilton was hurt) they did. You may not remember this, even Nick Anderson didn't start every game in '88 - '89. When Kendall came back they played really well as a team. I don't think we make to the final 4 if those 3 players didn't get the opportunity to fit in when Kendall Gill was out.In ‘89 the Illini were undefeated in the game they won against Georgia Tech and Gill was injured in. They reached #1 that next week and went on to lose 3 of their next 4 games while Gill was out with injury.
I was never a Patrick Ewing fan per se but he would occasionally catch em out of the air in the old days. Also in that famous 82 title game the first 8 North Carolina points were scored cause of Ewing goaltends. If you block a shot out of bounds it should be the defense ball. Would be a lot more fun.
89 team lost to Minnesota (who made the final 16 with Burton and bond) and Iowa who was #9 in country at time..they were not slouchesThat's correct and you're missing the point. And weren't all the regular season losses when Gill was out? I believe that is the case. The 89 team maybe gets lost in the fog of history but that is one of the best teams of the modern era to not win a title. UNLV 91 is probably the leader, then maybe 15 Kentucky, 89 Illinois & 05 Illinois pretty high up there also.89 team lost to Minnesota (who made the final 16 with Burton and bond) and Iowa who was #9 in country at time..they were not slouches
I’ve never gotten the impression this staff isn’t overly cautious with players, however I don’t think they really hold players back if they want to give it a go.This is just my opinion and I’m sure as heck not a doctor, but I would not even THINK about having him play until he is as healthy as he can possibly be. If that isn’t until March, I don’t care.
Look, the reality is Illinois is going to be a 2 or 3 seed in the Tournament barring a complete collapse, and there is very, very little difference between a 2 and 3 seed. Just want to avoid a 4 seed.
If Andrej plays too soon and sprains it again, he’s done. They need to be ULTRA cautious with this.
