lol the story is after the 11ish mark of the first half….a middle of the pack B1G team absolutely sh!t whipped us by 24 points.

That’s it. That’s the takeaway from this game.
We mailed it in after the first 11-12min.

Maybe I’m selling UCLA short, but scUM and MSU both held that team under 60.
You're not. They're mediocre. This kind of effort gets you eliminated the first weekend.

UCLA made shots, like 18-20 at one point, with a lot of them being tough shots. have to tip the cap a bit

Ridiculous last play of defense, but how did htey get 5 seconds......the shot went in at like 5.1 and they threw the ball in and dribbled before the TO was rewarded......and htey get 4.9 seconds?
As a previous poster stated the clock stops on the make.

The defense after the first 7-8 minutes was simply awful. You have to either load up and minimize paint points, or stay glued to guys on the perimeter and try to limit threes. You can’t give a team both, and that’s what we did tonight.

My concern is that UCLA just gave teams the blueprint for how to attack Illinois. Drive the ball repeatedly because Illinois struggles to stay in front of the ball. The bigs really struggle to guard away from the basket. Stojakovic is not particularly quick. Even Kylan is big and strong, but he can be had by quick guards. He’s tough and a warrior, but he’s not fast. Donovan Dent blew by Kylan repeatedly. I also remember the game against Ohio State where Bruce Thornton scored 40 and got wherever he wanted all night. That is just one example.

I am NOT saying Kylan is a poor defender. I AM saying he struggles with quickness. Our entire team, in my opinion, struggles with quickness.

It’s just amazing the potential for duality — if we were only able to guard 4.9 seconds with the full length of the court (which we couldn’t; no excuses), everyone would be up in arms, gloating about the win. Yes we couldn’t… and so now everything’s a catastrophe.

I UNDERSTAND that’s how sports works — you either win or you don’t, you’re either doomed or your elated. But it’s just not true to think there’s something major wrong with this team. ALL of our last 3 losses have been in overtime (and all to pretty good teams).
There would be absolutely no gloating after blowing a 23-point lead to a team that's barely in tournament contention.

5 of 15 overall shooting and 1 of 6 from three. 19 points on 15 shots is wildly inefficient and can't happen.

His turnover right before the end of the first half can't happen either. That whole play was a mess.

However, he did other things well, as you noted.

There were a lot of issues tonight over the last 29 minutes. If there was a true player of the game for the losing side, it would have been Ben H.
I think "wildly" inefficient is hyperbole. He was strong at the rim, just couldn't shoot worth a darn after he made that first 3.

Horrible defense. Horrible shooting outside of the first 10 minutes. Haven’t learned how to close games yet which is troubling heading into March. Would like to see the ball in Boswell’s hands a little more down the stretch (Keaton has been great but experience matters, especially in the tourney)

If ANY play sums up the absolutely PATHETIC offensive showing of the entire night, it's that last play.

In the game thread, I said Brad needs to run these guys ragged until they puke with defensive drills in practice the entire week before Michigan. But after calling THAT as their "lockdown, game on the line, needing just one full court stop to win," I'm not sure he would know what to even have them practice. PATHETIC.
Every overtime game we have lost we would have won if we just make our free throws at our normal rate in the last 5 minutes.

Not alot of them were tough shots. We're not a rotating team with the size we have. Either play straight up and let opposition dribble to the hoop, or play zone. When we get caught switching (and we did on something like 20 straight possessions), we give up alot of uncontested shots. That is how the 23 point lead evaporated.

For the best and top rated offense in college basketball, we really have failed recently in OT games. All those ratings are just one metric of performance. Defense sucked tonight also!

I wouldn't be. I understood the MSU, Wisconsin and even the home loss to Nebraska. I still think this team is absolutely a 1 seed in talent and ceiling. But we let them off the hook in this one. This isn't a catastrophe, it was a bad loss that never should've happened. No excuse for that inbound defense. Z should've been guarding the inbound to force UCLA into coming back to the ball. Full stop. The clock is your friend.

Honestly credit to dent and Cronin the final play. It’s an epidemic of players and coaches settling for outside shots (as dent did in regulation) when the clock winds down.

Everyone can say how easy it is to just stop the ball, but when the team is in the bonus, and the guard is quick, it’s not some easy thing to do.
I too think you have to give credit to UCLA and their coaching staff. They could have easily folded their tents and gone home in the first half. I know a lot of people do not like Cronin's abrasive style, but he can coach some hoops.

Been the blueprint for us defensively for atleast a bit.

That said, you had the no kylan excuse for most of them, and no Andrej for Wisconsin.

This one definitely feels more scary imo. Dent being walking mediocrity all year and legacy games verus us and Purdue sucks

13/42 from 3. Most of those in the 1st 10min. Maybe some more points in the paint with the tallest team in the ncaa....
I agree, but you are beating a dead horse.

UCLA lost to Michigan State by 23 and to Fishigan by 30. There is no way we should have lost to them. Maybe the long California vacation in the nice hotel or the sweet charter (per Coach Brad) was the reason the team did not tough out a W. Maybe reading today they were ranked #7 in the tournament made them believe they didn't need to put out max effort against UCLA. But something makes them turn off the switch, especially Mirk and Andre.

When we’re playing Arizona in a Sweet 16 game, just point to this game and the Wisconsin game to know why.

As good of a job as Underwood has done, these inexplicable losses to inferior teams have to stop. They are the difference between a 4 seed and a 1 or 2 seed.

The one thing you don't want to happen on that UCLA inbound play from full court is for UCLA to pass the ball to Dent as he's running toward the basket. I don't understand why no play was drawn/made to prevent the ball from coming to Dent. Oh well, on to Michigan and hoping for the best.
With the inbounder, it's essentially 4 on 5. The ball isnt going back to inbounder full court with under 5 seconds left. No clue why they didn't just double Dent. Literally KB guarded no one that final basket
