what’s crazy is it’s a lot of the same people in the stands, just acting differently bc the culture inside the SFC (especially the lower bowl) is what it is. many of the people down there want to stand and shout but don’t because they’re worried they might annoy the people around them. at a neutral site they can act how they want
I actually question how similar the crowd population was. This was a Wednesday night at 8:00 pm, and the bars/restaurants in West Loop were packed to the point of denying people entry. My perception was definitely that 80%+ of the UC crowd was from the Chicagoland Area, and I question how many out-of-towners (or at least people outside of Central Illinois) there are at a given SFC game … a good number, to be sure, but probably not any more than 25%.

This isn't an issue exclusive to the U of I. In my experience (again not in Chambana), it was basically like pulling teeth trying to get the Greeks to come out. Any university can promote Greek nights to try and get the sororities and frats to come out but for them it will just be another social event and they won't be invested in what's going on on the court. Most likely wouldn't come to the game anyway if they weren't forced to.
Oh you mean like the current iteration of Krush?

Lol, yeah, we have nowhere to go but up ... though I will reiterate, the atmosphere for Indiana was a very noticeable improvement.

Stating the obvious here, but Friday's environment will tell you everything you need to know about our student section and fans ... anything less than an absolutely electric atmosphere will be such a damning indictment on SFC and our fan base. Friday night game vs. a top 5 opponent, a hilariously long winning streak vs. Michigan on the line, triple bye for the BTT at stake, huge NCAAT seeding implications, the Morez component ... the ONLY problem will be "us" if the place isn't approaching Wake Forest-level hysteria at tipoff (not that I think it will, but I would happily settle for getting back to ~2022 Iowa or Arizona game vibes).

Does anyone have a read on what this means for seating layout and gameday environment? My initial reaction is that an elevated dining and beverage club is the last thing we need, unless it funds expanded student seating, which is not mentioned.

I cant find any specific information but I believe this is not a court side change but would be in the lower concourse.

On the topic of atmosphere, just yesterday a video popped up on X as it was the anniversary of the Frank Williams eruption game against Iowa. He had 3 or 4 just spectacular plays in that game and Vitale on the call lost his s**t multiple times.

In that 30 second clip you could see clearly what the atmosphere in that place used to be vs what it has been post remodel. A stark stark difference visually & audibly.

Had the exact same thought myself when watching that clip.

The building was absolutely up for grabs. Zero reason we can’t have that again.

He was a winery owner, so maybe a wine bar. Or a whine bar depending on how the game is going.

Agree with everything except that the remodel prevents this atmosphere from returning! The current Krush location is just as ideal as what the Izzone has (albeit only on one side) and arguably better than what the Paint Crew has (albeit way fewer seats). We can definitely get back to that sort of buzz, and I REALLY hope it starts tonight!

I-L-L!

So, how was crowd noise last night?
Top 3 of Underwood era. Maybe not the loudest I've heard it but the enthusiasm was there. A lot of people stayed standing well into the middle of the first half. It's the first game this year that I stood up the whole time and really didn't feel out of place or rude for doing so. People didn't wait for something good to happen to make noise. They made noise to try to impact the outcome. But alas..
