any chance he would take less money? I assume he was brought in to be the best player on the team this year and that didn't happen. I also assume it's very rare these kids take less money when they don't have to

His family is Rich, so maybe money is less of a factor. Pitch him on the TSJ year 2 glow up

obviously never gonna expect anyone to come in and be better than Keaton.

sounds like the early Interest was spot on and time to turn the heat up

Perhaps but who knows. I would think he wont take a pay cut and I dont think we offer more. If we feel we can match his NIL again he could stay. Could matter who returns. Does he like being here? Bonded with possible returning players? Does someone want to throw a noticeably bigger bag?
Plus… how well does he close out things here?
Hard to know.

I'll be 100% honest as someone that absolutely loved Ty.

I really don't care if he comes back. Both decisions he has made with redshirts are perfectly rational in the way of maximizing his NIL earnings but I'd rather get someone that wants to compete and win than a guy that wants to maximize his NIL.

He redshirted right before the season started because he didn't think he would get enough playing time. Which is fair but you're also kind of bailing on your teammates as the last moment.

Then he comes back and injured his knee preseason with reports that he could mid January or even February. February comes around and Illinois is legitimately in the hunt for a #1 seed(which would make anyone a true national title contender) and Boswell goes down. Ty does not burn his redshirt and shorthanded teams lose to MSU and Wisconsin on overtime killing any chance for a 1 seed.

Now maybe he legitimately wasn't healthy enough to return by Feb and I don't want to fault a kid for wanting to earn more but he can go earn more somewhere else.

Go recruit some kids like Mitch Handlogten who burned his redshirt in Feb of last year because he thought Florida was special and he wanted to contribute in any way he could.

Yeah - and imagine those numbers next year with a sophomore jump and an improvement due to being in a more well-spaced offense.

To play devil's advocate. When was the last time a shooter transferred to Illinois and improved their 3pt%?

Boswell was like a 38-39% 3pt shooter at Arizona and has been awful at Illinois. Stojakovic looks terrible from 3 this year and was around 32% his first years on higher volume. Ben and Davis were both worse in their first year.

Plummer is really the only transfer shooter that lived up the hype in recent memory. Guerrier actually shot the ball pretty well, and White improved a little bit from Louisville but then took a huge jump this year for Kansas. Even, DGL is now shooting 42% from 3 on nearly 7 attempts per game this year after shooting 22% and 25% in two years at Illinois.

In defense of DGL, there is a big difference when you are coming off the bench with spot minutes v. playing regularly. The %s at IL should be qualified on that basis.

This is a fair take. I would counter that it's not specific to IL - lots of transfers move from one school to another and underperform the first year.

This is what I think has the potential for this to be different -

-Boz and Andrej are not "shooters." Certa is. As I understand it, that's his game. Also, Boz and Andrej were asked to take on different roles (Boz less so) than with their previous teams.
-Jake and Ben transferred from lower level competition so their adjustment makes sense.
-The sophomore jump is well documented and none of the other players referenced transferred after their Fr seasons.
-I believe we would essentially be asking Certa to do what he does at ND but in an offense more conducive to his skill set and with greater maturity/skill/practice (or whatever else typically drives a sophomore jump). I do think we may ask a lot from him on D (which could theoretically cause fatigue so one could argue his legs wouldn't be as fresh), but it's not like Shrewsberry is a run and gun coach who doesn't care about D.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Who even knows if he enters the portal and then comes here. If he does, I'd be very excited about his potential.
