I get Brad rightfully being ticked at the close game comment.

We've won tons of close games.
I thought Brad sounded and looked unexpectedly defensive. Like he is touchy about the issue of close games. It's not that he said the question "is a bunch of crap" but that he said he did not like the question. Just dismiss the question and move on.

Humble vacation brag - I watched this game from an island off the Costa Verde in Brazil. Waves lapping. Brazilian beer flowing. Wifi good enough to get the idea. There is maybe only one non-familial thing that could give me anxiety today. And that thing is a close game against Maryland.

Been beating this drum for a while now (not that it's anything revelatory) but all you have to do is look at threes - made and allowed.

When we make at least 10 or 11, we're good. As in, any team in the country better bring their A game on those nights to beat us.

But when we don't or when we allow 10 or more, lesser teams will have a puncher's chance. And equal or better teams may beat us.

MD fell short of the magic number tonight and even if they had made 10, still would've lost. But mark my words, if we lose prior to the E8, it'll be because of the scenario described above.

All that said, I agree with everyone who said "a win is a win." No pictures on the team sheet. Just needed to get the dub. And we did.

Onto banner season.

And while I'm on one....

2020 - no banner
2021 - banner
2022- banner
2023- no banner
2024 - banner
2025 - no banner

2026 - do we really think THIS Illinois team will be the first of the 2020s to go consecutive years without raising one?? I don't.
So you are predicting either a BTT or an NCAA championship? Or FF, if you count that banner.

Methinks you are partaking of other Central American delicacies this week. 😂

Has been parroted throughout the fanbase lately

Illinois has won a bunch of close games, just had a tendency to run away at the end in them and the final score looks more comfy (Texas Tech, Tenn, at OSU, at Iowa, at Purdue, at Nebraska, at Maryland)

Lot of road games in there so we do it other teams buildings as well

I feel like im taking crazy pills, but I really didn't hate the defense today? I wouldn't put it in the hall of fame, but I thought Mills and Coit and Adams hit some tough stuff.

I did dislike the defensive rebounding, especially the first 15 minutes though.
It will be a good shot chart. We were all layups and three pointers, with the threes not falling. Maryland had a ton of midrange shots, but was hitting them.

I got home for the late 2 minutes of the game. Listening on the radio sure helped keep me alert while driving for 6 hours.

Illinois was 9-1 in the Big Ten at one point.

They haven't looked quite a sharp at times lately.

It was a good question and Brad was offended

I don't understand what that has to do with "close games".

He's right, they've pulled away and won tons of close games. I'd be offended too if fans/media blindly parroted a talking point that's pretty easy to disprove. I'd be more concerned if he wasn't passionate about that.

I couldn't listen at all tonight. Two Argentinian soccer teams in our hotel (in Montevideo) were hogging all the bandwidth. Best I could do was watch score updates on MSN. I'll get to watch the highlights on Youtube if I get up before they start logging onto the wifi.

OK, can we talk about how the refs had every right to call a tech on Mirk there with 4 seconds left?

I pointed out in another thread I think a few days after the UCLA game that we have won several games where it was a 1 to 2 score game with under a minute to go and we ended up pulling away to win by 6-10 points. We have a better record in close games than what some think. They just weren't the buzzer beaters or OT games.

We've lost all 3 OT games over our last 8, none of our wins were close except today. Brad's playing a bit dumb here.

First off, credit to the Maryland guys. They played really, really hard. Happy with the win. 8-2 on the road for the season is FANTASTIC!

Going back to the 2nd half of the UCLA game (3-22 from 3), we have REALLY been ice cold from deep the last 3-4 games. I thought our ball movement, cutting, energy, etc. was fine. Gotta knock down some of those open looks. That’s why I’d like to see more Jake Davis.

Defensively we really struggle to contain dribble penetration. Andrej was getting blown by repeatedly. Keaton has struggled with that. Honestly, so has Kylan.

Because Sturdy thought he was throwing him a softball question. Gave Underwood every opportunity to instead talk about winning close games. Playing some tough teams on the road, yada yada, whatever. Change the narrative.

Nope, instead went all cry baby on Sturdy.

Sturdy then has to apologize  to maintain his good guy status.

Lol these days, beer and caipirinhas are all that's required.

But yes, my reasoning and judgement may be more impaired than usual.

On a serious note, it's really not hard for me to imagine us getting to the elite 8 and then having one A game that vaults us into the Final Four. I think I like our odds to make a Final Four more than our odds to win the BTT. However, read sentence #2.

Also a number of games that looked close going into the final 6 mintues and then... (Nebraska, OSU, Penn State, Iowa all on the road). I think getting wound up abut the MSU, Wisconsin and UCLA games... is pretty ridiculous.

I think you're looking far too into Sturdy's tweet if you're calling that some apology to get back into good graces and "maintain status". Seems far more likely to me Sturdy is laughing it off, hence the "lol". I also can't recall one reporter Brad has shunned, banned, or consistently shamed throughout his tenure at Illinois. I can give you quite a few coaches who do consistently do that though, in fact one is about to hit the podium in a few minutes.

And did Brad not answer the question anyway? "we've won tons of close games and pulled away". There ya, go.
